A friend of a very close friend of mine appeared on Australian tv show Rockwiz and performed a staggering cover of Gimme Shelter. Attempting Merry Clayton's vocals on the song must rank as one of the most foolhardy musical pursuits imaginable, but she absolutely nailed it... and then gave it an extra kicking. Never mind Tim Rogers, but it’s impossible to ignore Vika Bull...

She is fantastic

Thanks Mark - really enjoyed her performance

YouTube then directed me to Lisa Fisher with the Stones at Glastonbury in 2013 who is no slouch either....

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Brilliant! There’s not many who could pull that off. Fortunately, not many try.

By the way, Speaking of Talking Heads, as we weren’t, did they name themselves that because it’s an anagram of King's Lead Hat? Only realised that when I saw your post. I’m very, very slow.

message 1256: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
I never noticed that before. Kings Lead Hat was recorded after Talking Heads formed. Given Brian’s association with them around the same time it must surely be more than coincidence 💡

message 1257: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Very good to know that I wasn’t the only one to not notice that until today! Having never been a fan of the band, I didn’t know the chronology, so I guess Eno came up with the title as a play on the band’s name.

Have you ever seen the 1974 Dutch tv footage of Eno performing Seven Deadly Finns? One of my favourite non-lp tracks ever, by any artist. Right up there with Virginia Plain. And, for that matter, one of my favourite songs to employ yodelling...

David | 1065 comments A few of us have been playing a game, using Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums list from last year, and a mobile phone random number generator. So, from the first 5/500 randomly selected for me...

My Chemical Romance - Teenagers (from The Black Parade)
Radiohead - Idioteque (Kid A)
Aaliyah - Giving It Up (One In A Million)
Radiohead - No Surprises (OK Computer)
Etta James - Tough Mary (At Last)

Fraternal greetings.

Nice idea David

message 1264: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments It’s certainly given me an opportunity to listen to acts and records that have hitherto been only names to me. A discussion about My Chemical Romance (their name suggested some sort of beats-based electronic act to me) allowed my younger daughter to fill me in on the breadth and compartmentalisation of the various directions of emo, when it just sounded like enjoyable spiky guitar power pop. It was me who brought Rod Hull into this conversation.

message 1267: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments It should be mandatory for all future editions of Here Come The Warm Jets to include Seven Deadly Finns as a bonus track, just as all future editions of the first Roxy album should include Virginia Plain as a bonus track.

Two mind-bogglingly brilliant tracks, even if spellcheck takes issue with “bogglingly.”

message 1268: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Your inclusion of the brilliant Return of Django reminds me -- I recently stumbled upon the dub works of Skin, Flesh & Bones, which have completely lit up my life. If this don't turn you on, you ain't got no switch...

Top shelf power-pop, which should come as no surprise as their singer is Rick Springfield.

message 1283: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments It’s definitely a considerable nod in the direction of Big Star, which ain't no bad thing.

message 1284: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments If you’ve not seem it yet, the latest Mojo has a very insightful 8-page feature on Big Star, flawlessly documented by Memphis’s peerless chronicler, Robert Gordon.

It’s the issue with the Joni Mitchell cover trailing an in-depth feature on herself. A good Troggs piece too, and a fond look back at the statue-kicking agit-punk of the Redskins.

message 1285: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments It’s on my radar, but haven’t grabbed a copy yet. Really looking forward to the articles you mentioned -- very nice to see that our Reg and his Troggs haven’t been totally forgotten.

message 1286: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments I think it was late 78 or early 79 I got to see Reg and the Andover Anarchists, on a tour of small venues and university union halls. A dozen years on from their few moments in the sun, they were still as energetic and one-beat-away-from-shambling onstage as ever. Fantastic. The Troggs Tapes, then being copied from cassette to cassette, in ever-diminishing sound level quality, were the stuff of legend.

I once had to review a Chip Taylor/Carrie Rodriguez live album, in passing referencing Wild Thing as being “unique in that it was recorded by both Hendrix and Presley (OK, OK, that was Reg)”.
