I'm becoming obsessed by John King on CNN and his magic wall

Couple of earworms right there Mark

We're all rooting for you

message 1207: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Not sure if you’re able to watch MSNBC, but if you can, you owe it to yourself to check out Steve Kornacki and his magic wall. Total hero.

It's been a stressful ordeal, of course, but it’s increasingly looking like the result that we need. It’s a shame that all of the surrounding nonsense is obscuring the historical importance of Kamala Harris’ massive achievement.

By the way, that track by The November 3 is actually Jane Wiedlin out of The Go-Go's.

I thought it had a Go Gos vibe - good ol Jane

I'm pretty sure MSNBC is streaming live on YouTube so off to check it out

message 1209: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments I was never a fan of The Go-Go's, never had an opinion one way or the other, but I recently sat through the new documentary on them -- streaming via Showtime -- and it did the job of holding my interest. Worth a look-in if you’re inclined.

David | 1065 comments Nice. Much appreciated.

I’ve had a morning of Hogmanay deadline-beating football admin, which eats into YouTube browsing time, but I dialled up this as the soundtrack, and it provided the will to live as I edited procedures, standards documents and practice notes.

Thumbs aloft for the weekend. From Tuesday next week it’s nearly summer...

David | 1065 comments Merry that thing, everyone!

Torpor has set in, so my five for Festivus are picked randomly from a tiny stack of LPs by my left elbow:

Hot Nights In Georgia - Jason And The Scorchers
Scrapple From The Apple - Dexter Gordon
Steamboat Row - Gerry Rafferty
Looking For Lewis And Clark - The Long Ryders
The Shape I’m In (Live, Rock Of Ages) - The Band

Not a turkey among them.
No Cranberries.
No Prefab Sprout.
A lack of Pigbags in blankets.

Splendid - thanks David. Hope you're having a lovely day

message 1228: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Yes, a good day, thank you, and I hope yours was too.

A pile of Dickens souvenirs from the family Secret Santa, new slippers to replace those wrecked by playing football all summer with a hyper-active Border Terrier, and a set of Bluetooth earbuds which is tantamount to witchcraft. My Toronto-based daughter’s partner had his eclecticism sated by receiving vinyl copies of albums by the stylistically-irreconcilable Napalm Death, and Steely Dan’s Aja. That gave me rh excuse to dig out the Dan box set and put Pearl Of The Quarter on a half-hour repeat loop. God bless us, every one, and all that.

message 1231: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Happy New Year, guv.

Ma-Ma-Ma Belle is the great lost early ELO single, or at least I seemed to be the only one who recalls it in their early frenzied TOTP cello assaults. Excellent work, sir.

Alas Jeff got caught up in over-production around 1975, and always seemed thereafter (The Wilburys notwithstanding) to pursue his dream of being George Martin.

Coincidentally, my Fitbit step count has diminished a little this week due to treacherous underfoot conditions up here in the tundra, but at least twice, Mrs I has looked at me quizzically, and then shrugged, with a dismissive shake of the head as I announced, post-walk, “10497 steps. Just 41 more and I get to join ELO”.

message 1232: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
Genius David

I believe it was Marc Bolan (recording in an adjacent studio) who came up with that Ma-Ma-Ma Belle riff. It's blimmin wonderful isn't it? By coincidence I'm working my way through the early ELO albums having never heard them before. They are quite different to the slick pop purveyors of the late 70s/early 80s. Much to appreciate and enjoy though.

Your fitbit quote made me chuckle. I must remember to use it to, doubtless, similar levels of bemusement

message 1233: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments I’m now wondering where ELO might have gone musically had Roy Wood not baled out early on, but the fact that we were treated to Ball Park Incident, See My Baby Jive (just about as perfect as pop gets) and his forgotten Dear Elaine solo single, means that we had two acts to admire rather than one.

I must see what Spotify is harbouring of The Idle Race’s recorded output, which I’ve not approached in years.

message 1234: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments I was knocking an ear to The Idle Race just a few days ago -- sort of acquainting myself more than reacquainting, really. The track 'Follow Me Follow' seems to be the highlight, at least to my ears.

Conversely, I don’t suppose a week has gone by without giving Wizzard a spin.

message 1235: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments I think The Idle Race epitomise how British acts developed in those days before the instruction manual had been written. Enthusiastic skifflers/US RnR covers/beat band/soul/blues/psychedelia/out-and-out rock or prog was a common path. Some (Procol Harum, the Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin etc) made great success of it). Others remained firmly in the second division (Family/The Troggs/The Groundhogs etc) never hit paydirt, but always had a deal and toured to enthusiastic audiences and personal ‘exhaustion’. They’re the interesting chancers from my youth that I need to return to, and Idle Race is among them.
