Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments If there’s one for Sunday, this one’s it for me. Stumbled upon it a few hours ago. Apparently, they’ve got a new album coming out next month, their first in nearly forty years. I was never a fan, but this one pleases.

Thanks Mark

Yes, I'll concede if I put aside the negativity I feel towards their singer the song is pretty good, but then I'm a sucker for anything that references Glam rock

Back in the day I also quite liked She's So Modern and Mary of the Fourth Form but then they got quite annoying quite quickly

message 1103: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Yep, I dug a few songs along the way, much earlier on, but was entirely put off when Sir Bob flaunted piety and invented Bono. This track’s quite good, though, and I’ve a hunch that the shot with the yellow Moth Club sign must be an homage to the Ziggy Stardust cover shot.

I was not familiar with....

Evelyn Freeman - Didn't It Rain

...until your post Mark

It's a winner - I loves it

It appears on this tempting looking LP...

Jasmine Records continues their exploration of "Club Beat" - the roots of Mod, R&B and Soul - that coalesced in the bohemian melting pot of Soho, London, post WW2.

In this chapter they explore the timeless sound of foot-stomping Gospel music as heard throughout the UK underground Rare Soul scene, both as current productions and as 1950's R&B-tinged rarities that form the playlist of our original 25-track compilation.

Features new-to-CD tracks including the "Two Little Fishes" by The Gospel Pearls, 'Precious Lord" by Cross Jordan Singers, "I'm On My Way" by Mahalia Jackson, "Goliath" by Roy Brown and many more.

"Gospel music is nothing but singing of good tidings - spreading the good news. It will last as long as any music because it is sung straight from the human heart." - Mahalia Jackson

Includes illustrated and informative liner notes.

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments There’s a wealth of excellent gospel music out there, particularly those recordings that straddled the line with early Rhythm & Blues and early Rock & Roll.

For a quick tour, here are a few of my favourite solid-senders...

Rev Lofton & The Holy Travelers - Look To Jesus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEdek...

Golden Gate Gospel Quartet - Jezebel
This one’s particularly interesting. Recorded and released in the late 1930s, it not only foreshadows rockabilly’s hiccuping vocal style, but also rapping.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHc33...

Selwyn Cox - His Name Is Jesus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL_M_...

And my all-time favourite music-related footage, as well as my all-time favourite guitar solo... blink during the solo, and you lose out.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Up Above My Head

Thanks Mark - those tunes are tip top

message 1121: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments A recent Word podcast, discussing a novel about, mused on the church’s rôle in entertaining bored Southern youth via some of the fervent preaching Jerry Lee-alike nutjobs to be found there.
I came to gospel through Southern soul, Capricorn’s Wet Willie and Ray Charles. I once reviewed an Al Green album by stating that although the songs are about Him, they are also about her, a really interesting conflict.
I hear word of an imminent, comprehensive Staple Singers box set, which I’ll investigate.
Here’s the late Popsy Dixon, Holmes Brothers’ drummer attaching electrodes to spinal cords. I used to love watching audience jaws drop when he hit his stride.
https://youtu.be/vbDq15HKjgU

message 1122: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Wet Willie, often unfairly bracketed with Capricorn Records’ Southern Rock giants, were more influenced by the soul hetitage of Georgia and Alabama. Jimmy Hall (still Jeff Beck’s go-to tour singer) is joined by bassist brother Jack, sister Donna, Mama Hall, and the late Donna Avery on He Set Me Free. It did strange things to an avowed 17 year old atheist who bought Dixie Rock in 1974.

CQM | 242 comments If there is one (or two) thing(s) to cheer us in these trying times then surely it is Laurel and Hardy. In the absence of a television to watch them on whistling the various tunes from their films always brings a little smile to my face (which makes it difficult to whistle) Well blow me down if some Dutch folk didn't go and record all of the music from L&H films, note-perfect.
Beau Hunks - On to the Show 51 seconds of nostalgic dreamland.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr9ne...

There aren't nearly enough fiddle/yodelling workouts in modern music, cue Hurray for the Riff Raff - Look Out Mama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g9nD...

When I was a kid my mum and dad had an old rock n roll compilation LP. This was my favourite track.
Charlie Rich - Rebound

He gets treated like a cowson!
Chas & Dave - One Fing 'n' Anuvver

24 years ago, today was among the worst days ever. https://youtu.be/iT9yf-Qa_1M

Yet it was my late school friend Stuart’s birthday. Strawbs (no definite article, please) were never far from his turntable. https://youtu.be/jhy5suv3uzE

Elephant in the room. Ssshhhh... https://youtu.be/SAy2ZKm3o-g

No recording of Wordsworth’s marvellous ‘To My Sister’ seems to exist, apary from a soulless Alexa-like synthesised reading, but this came up in a Spotify search for ‘Lyrical Ballads’. Ha! https://open.spotify.com/track/7uPmQt...
