I heard it was a goodie David and - for whatever reason - never got round to it. It's still available on his website so I'm going to take the plunge.

message 1052: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments It’s very worthwhile.

I helped crowd-fund it, and every time Pete contacted subscribers to apologise for the delays, he’d temper our disappointment by giving little audio and video snippets, and marvellous Wylie to-camera messages. These made the delay (his dedication to quality control is admirable) part of the overall charm.

David | 1065 comments Lovely. We’re trying to work on a Bolan thing up here in the sticks, without becoming a tribute act (the corkscrew hair’s not what it was).

Did you get Pete Sounds?

Sounds like a winner David - please keep us informed with progress

Yes, Pete Sounds has arrived though I have only given it a cursory listen so far, first impressions are very impressive though. Thanks for giving me the required push David.

David | 1065 comments Aaaahhh... After 40 years of hustling and hassling, fretting and fighting, lubricating the wheels and cogs and kicking the tyres of both uncaring capitalism and collegiate public services, I will retire this afternoon to live out my dotage doing what pleases me.

Allow me the self-indulgence of a suitably-themed mini playlist to usher myself into the longest-possible weekend. I trust my Hamiltonian comrades will put every effort into enjoying theirs.

Congratulations! Now, then, is the time to master the art of selfishness. Enjoy!

message 1059: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Thank you, Mark. I will be trying to do my bit for our crumbling society by exploring opportunities for suitable voluntary work, but I will make concerted efforts to test the snooze boundaries of the living room sofa, and the effects of freshly-ground coffee beans on such indolent inactivity. With books, of course.

message 1060: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments You could say I’m jealous, but I said it first. The charitable voluntary work idea sounds quite noble. And admirable. And, of course, there’s miles and miles of books, film and music to catch up on. I wouldn’t even know where to start, but that’d be a very welcome dilemma indeed!

message 1061: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments I expect that it’ll be like being on holiday for a month or so, especially with Festivus imminent, but I will enjoy not having to venture out into January’s horizontal sleet on the first day of work following the extended Yule break.

Where to start is indeed a dilemma. It’s a comfort to assume that one has gathered the materials for a teetering turret of books that will provide sufficient literary exploration opportunities for 24 months or so. Then a quite inspiring talk on Thomas Carlyle at the local Dickens Fellowship meeting sends you to eBay to add a little more grout and pointing to the sound edifice. That’s not a complaint!

Splendid news David

I am sure it will feel pretty strange at first however you will quickly adapt and soon wonder how you ever managed to fit paid work into a very fulfilling life. If, for some unlikely reason, you do feel at a loose end, despite the myriad opportunities for self improvement, relaxation, and adding to the sum total of human happiness through volunteering etc, then get a dog. What wonderful creatures they are.

I love your five too - most apt, and impeccable selections all. On that note, here's an off the cuff five....

Black Grape - A Big Day In The North
Transglobal Underground - I, Voyager
Alternative TV - Why Don’t You Do Me Right?
The Selecter - On My Radio
Jackie Wilson - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher

Have a most convivial weekend

message 1063: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Nice selection, Nigey. My feet are tapping below my desk, for the very last time. Hooray!

I will adapt quite easily I think. I took one for the youngsters here during difficult times in 2015, and reduced to a 4-day week, with a plan to reduce to 3 days in March 2018. Being asked to give the kiss of life to our Stavanger operation shattered that plan, but Davexit day is upon me, and i'm desperate to get lunch out of the way to wave goodbye.

This may, of course, result in your having to add an additional lane to the information superhighway heading towards here, as there may be a sudden traffic increase from NE Scotland.

Not a great deal to dance about this morning if I'm honest...
Might have to use music to drown out the horrific noises coming from the world of politics.

1. Pleasingly shambolic effort from The Felice Brothers to begin with.

2. Grumbling and complaining from Greg Brown.

We can appreciate the performance, the musicianship, the craft, the songs, but can only imagine the social impact that footage must have had when originally aired.

Plus, Bo & The Duchess were incredibly bad-ass!

message 1090: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Ah, this is marvellous.

I think I was in danger of being hit with some sort of over-usage surcharge by YouTube when I first discovered that footage of Bo thrilling young America with those rhythms.

I was lucky to see him on a UK tour in the mid-80s, which was just about as thrilling as live shows get.

When people ask me what I’m going to do in Chicago in May, the first leg of my trek which will also take in Memphis and New Orleans, my stock response has been, “Searching for the spirit of Bo Diddley”. Ain’t that a man?

https://youtu.be/pmoFeLBaeCg

message 1091: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments I remember seeing Bo in 1983, in Providence, RI, and I remember it mainly because of his endless set. He played -- and I stayed -- well past the point where more than half the room had had enough and left for home. After about two hours, I was wishing that he really did use a "cobra snake as a necktie" and that it bit him, or strangled him, forcing an abrupt end to his set. Don’t get me wrong, he was brilliant, but seemed to force a stubborn endurance test of sorts with his audience. Bless 'im.

Not sure if the old Chess Studios still exist in Chicago, but if they do, you should trouble its hallowed halls. The only thing in Chicago that I can definitely recommend is the architecture tour by boat. I’ve never done it myself, but that’s only because I’ve never been to Chicago. But, as activities go, I know a load of trusted friends who swear by the experience.

Any chance you’ll be swinging through NYC?

message 1092: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments Hi Mark. I recall that Bo played a pretty conservative 90 minutes when he moved among us at around the same time as you saw him, and he was even pushing a new album he had on release. I remember being impressed at his physical fitness. An hour and a half in a sweaty, smoky club, ad not a drop of perspiration on him, and the immaculately-knotted tie not loosened by a millimetre. A total pro.

Our itinerary is Chicago for around 4 days, then on to the City of New Orleans train out of Illinois Central to spend another 4 days in Memphis, which is pretty much my spiritual home. I’m none too concerned about Graceland, but need to visit Stax, Hi, Sun and so on, to find the non-existent ridge... (continued...)

message 1093: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments (cont...) just a half a mile from the Mississippi Bridge, and somehow engineer bumping into Spooner Oldham. New Orleans is really about the food, the city’s swinging rhythms, and the social history, before we fly back to Chicago and home. I may just refuse to come home.

NYC isn’t a destination this time around, but I believe it’s on my wife’s radar for a future trip.

That's a wonderful sounding trip David - have a great time

I spent about 10 days in Chicago in 1999 and loved the place. Loads of great neighbourhoods and plenty to do and enjoy.

I've never experienced Memphis or New Orlean though. Both are very tempting.

Any time you’re ready to swap your life in the UK for mine in NYC, just say the word. I’m already packed, just need to remember to leave a few Stan Barstow paperbacks behind for you.

I wish I could fling a few tips re Memphis and New Orleans, but I’ve not been to either, so know of nothing apart from the obvious. Or, rather, what I assume would be the obvious for a fellow music-obsessive/aficionado.

I’m not at all well-traveled stateside, but New Orleans has always been one American city that I’d be keen to see.

message 1096: by David (new)

David | 1065 comments I think NYC would be too fast for me day-to-day, Mark, but I’ll try to sample it one of these days, but I fear its energy would exhaust me.

I have a friend who’s acting as my New Orleans advisor. He’s visited frequently, has played there as a musician, and I believe he even led musical tours for a time. I’ll be pestering him for insider info.

I’m less-sure about Memphis, although that’s really where my heart lies. Apparently it’s not all that easy to get around, but I’m determined to pay homage at the places whose co-ordinates and legends have inspired me for decades.

An interesting back story to a lovely song

Claire Denis’ highly anticipated first English Language film 'High life' will be released in the Spring of 2019.

Willow feat Robert Pattsinson is from Stuart A. Staples of tindersticks score for ‘High Life’

As for the film....

'High Life' was written and directed by Denis and stars Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche in the lead roles. It focuses on a group of criminals who are tricked into believing they will be freed if they participate in a mission to travel on a spaceship towards a black hole to find an alternate energy source while being sexually experimented on by the scientists on board.
