The Flatmates are a new one to me, thanks for the tip. Sorta reminds me of a local NYC band back in the late 1990s, called The Prissteens. You might dig them...

I was stunned to learn, quite recently, that it was members of Subway Sect who went on to form JoBoxers.

And possibly even more stunned to learn, also quite recently, that it was members of X-Ray Spex who went on to form Classix Nouveaux.

message 960: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
Yes indeed - it's a strange and wonderful world

Sean McLusky, ex Jo Boxers and Sect, is currently back playing with Subway Sect. Vic n the Sect are quite often on Marc Rileys BBC6 Music show. Vic is great value if you ever get the chance to hear him interviewed. I've met him a few times over the years and can confirm he's a diamond.

message 961: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Apart from having a few albums, I’ll cop to not knowing very much at all about either Vic or the Sect, despite always having had the urge to dig a bit deeper. Maybe now’s the time to sift through the internet for some interviews and etcet.

Before moving to England and forming JoBoxers, Dig Wayne [then trading under the name Buzz Wayne] fronted a really good rockabilly band here in NYC, called Buzz & The Flyers. They were a lot more reverent and less "new wavey" than their cross-borough rivals, The Stray Cats. One bit of footage survives, filmed at the legendary Peppermint Lounge... a faithful cover of Little Pig by Dale Hawkins...

Great vid Mark - and more great triv. I had no idea about Dig/Buzz's former incarnation

I really like the first two JoBoxers singles and their image. A shame that's all they really ever amounted to. Seemed like there might be more to come.

message 963: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments I liked JoBoxers very much at the time, and have recently been giving their stuff more listens -- apart from the dreaded regulation 1980s production, I think the material and the performances have mostly held up very nicely. And yeah, their image was great, even if I wasn’t able to clock the reference points at the time.

Looking back, from this distance, it seems like a failed effort to create a movement of sorts on the back of the earliest Dexys -- almost like doing with Northern Soul what 2Tone did with ska [or maybe that’s my total misconception, I don’t really know]. Remember these also-rans? At the time, I connected them with Dexys and JoBoxers...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KGtl...

And, of course, I absolutely loved The Bureau...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OopMb...

Which very nicely brings us up to date with this brand new short [15 enjoyable and engaging mins] documentary by Pete Williams - a bit of a guided tour through his superb new album. If you haven’t sat through this yet, you need to.

Will have to check that one out, toot sweetly. I’ve been on a steady diet of Dexter Gordon this week, specifically two albums titled “Dexter Gordon Blows Hot & Cool” and “Go.” I’m slowly dipping my toes into jazz, and sifting through to sort out what I like.

I hope you like it. I love it, but definitley the more commmercial end of the genre but, crucially, it's got a vibe that makes me feel good about the world, which works for me.

I’m not ashamed to cop to being infinitely more drawn towards the more commercial side of jazz. I prefer my music to make sense, as opposed to the more avant garde be-bop stuff, which just strikes me as total wankery. Chet Baker’s perfectly fine, in my book, and I’ve grown completely obsessed with nearly everything by Jimmy Smith.

This footage is incredible...

Superb.
I just looked him up and I quote "(he's) is a Japanese mascot that is a mix of a cat and an apple and plays heavy metal drums"...

message 986: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments But man cannot live on Nyangostar alone, at least not this particular man, so my listening week has also included a heaping helping of the late Maurice Frawley, one of Autralia’s finest ever.

Peter Perrett's Humanworld LP finally gets its release today. I will be giving it the once over this very day. The first three tracks that we've already heard are all excellent.

I've just read a four star review which makes me feel confident it will just as good as 2017's 'How The West Was Won'.

So, in honour of Mr P and his LP, here's a PP five for Friday...

The Only Ones - Lovers of Today
Peter Perrett - Heavenly Day
The Only Ones - The Beast
Peter Perrett - How The West Was Won
Peter Perrett - Woke Up Sticky

Have a wonderful weekend Hamiltonians

message 992: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Yep, my copy of Humanworld turned up in last night’s post and, not surprisingly, it’s another superb effort on the part of our Peter. The lone disappointment, if you could call it that, is that 48 Crash is not a cover of the Quatro chestnut.

Too early to shout about favourite tracks, but any playlist missing Heavenly Day will be coming up very short indeed.

Really looking forward to spending the weekend with this one.
