^ Enjoyed. Thanks CQM.

Here's a quick five from my end of Patrick Hamilton Street....

1.

A crap name but a band who make very pleasing music. Here's their cover of 'Keep On Loving You' which is, possibly surprisingly, rather lovely...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDJPp...
Cigarettes After Sex — Keep On Loving You

2.

Ex-members of House of Love and Adorable have just released their second album, every bit as good as the first, and here's a ridiculously good example of their schtick (I had to knock up a quick vid and upload it to YouTube so you could hear it)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtMk_...
Pete Fij / Terry Bickers — If The World Is All We Have

3.

I've been singing this in my head quite a lot recently. No surprise because it's super duper....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46tcA...
Michael Nesmith — Different Drum

4.

This is one of the most inventive hip hop/sampled/cut up tracks you will ever hear in all your puff. Life reaffirming...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLrnk...
The Avalanches — Frontier Psychiatrist

5.

Kinks man and one of his sons have collaborated on fab new album which I commend. Heartily. Tear in the eye stuff.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCkb6...
Dave Davies & Russ Davies — Path Is Long

Have a wonderful weekend Hamiltonians

CQM | 242 comments To celebrate my recent birthday money enabled purchase of the Lee Hazlewood box set/book malarkey today's five from me has a distinctly Lee flavour.

First up she's not Nancy she's Suzi Jane Hokum and for my money that's even better. Same Old Songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewosm...

Next up it's the sweet (geddit) sounds of Honey Ltd with Louie Louie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v-p6...

The International Submarine Band are next to surface (really I should be on the radio) with Do You Know How it Feels to be lonesome produced for Lee's label by Suzi jane.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8B1i...

Sanford Clark with his version of Lee's Houston (I can't think of any links for that, maybe I'm not cut out for radio after all)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e2Gv...

Finally the great man himself, You Look Like a Lady!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH_GY...

Rock on!

That boxset sounds like a complete winner

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments One For Friday from me, but it's a damned goodun.

The results are never good when bands reunite and release new material, a fact that tends to be even more pronounced when the band in question is one that I never cared about when they were originally active.

London combo The Godfathers are back, and proving to be the exception. Colour me impressed and set the controls for loud...

Some days - like this one - I am convinced that The Kinks were the greatest group ever ever ever....

Here's a Kinksonian five for Friday...

Plastic Man
Autumn Almanac
Where Have All The Good Times Gone
Days
Suzannah's Still Alive

message 861: by CQM (new)

CQM | 242 comments Been a bit tied up for the last few Friday's so technically this should be 35 for Friday but I'll stick to the standard 5 for fear of boring everyone.

1. I happened to be in a second hand music and bookshop (yes I know a little bit of heaven in West Norwood) anyhow the proprietor was playing a record to check it wasn't scratched and when we'd heard enough I went up and bought it. Ben E. King's Rough Edges from 1970 was that album and this is his cover od the Beatles Don't Let Me Down
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwEZr...

2. As it's Friday and at some point near the end of the evenings revels I will undoubtedly be struck down by a certain melancholy here's Silver Jews with their Friday Night Fever
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8_K5...

3. Next an artist/song I was introduced to by Cerys Mathews on her BBC radio 6 (I'll never call it 6 music) show. Frazey Ford - Done.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXRry...

4. A lovely bit of blue eyed soul from Delaney and Bonnie next, always difficult to pick just one track of theirs but I'm going for Get Ourselves Together this time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzdXO...

5. Couldn't let Fats go without a mention and it might be an obvious choice but it's also great. Blueberry Hill...

A stellar five CQM, as always. I'd never heard Friday Night Fever before but that is gloriously maudlin.

message 870: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Did you manage to haul in a stack of Smiley Lewis yet? Wondering how you're going with it all, and having a hard time imagining that you're disappointed in any way, shape or form. His recordings are absolutely majestic, and he paved the way for countless piano players that followed in his wake.

Along somewhat similar lines, at some point you should knock an ear to the recordings of Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis -- all shining examples of early barrelhouse boogie piano, who heavily informed the earliest rock and roll rumblings, particularly influential on players like Jerry Lee and Little Richard. You simply can't go wrong.

Yes Mark. Thanks so much. I am the proud owner of a 33 song Smiley compilation CD and it is exactly as you foresaw. A most pleasing collection, if a little overwhelming

Personal faves at the moment are 'Shame Shame Shame' and his version (presumably the original too) of 'I Hear You Knocking' and of course the superb 'Mama Don't Like It'.

What's this? More of the same?

Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis

I'll have a rummage. Thanks.

A couple of my absolutist favourites in there CQM...

Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind
Pixies - Here Comes Your Man

I'm unfamiliar with the other three but, given their rarified company, must assume they are similarly high grade tuneage

#offtoinvestigate

I got a ticket to see Morrissey in March 2018 earlier today - given his recent somewhat questionable utterances I don't know whether to be pleased or vaguely ashamed

Here's my five....

Eric B. & Rakim — Paid in Full
Diana Ross and the Supremes — I'm Livin' in Shame
Smiley Lewis — Shame, Shame, Shame
The Mountain Goats — Abandoned Flesh
Ghostpoet — Dopamine If I Do

For me, 2018 is already shaping up to be a banner year in NYC -- Peter Perrett in March and, just announced, John Cooper Clarke in April. Never seen either, despite decades of being a fan.

If I were the sort to use the word stoked, I’d use it now.

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Let me know what you make of Bronco Bullfrog. We watched it about fifteen years ago, long before it was cleaned up and officially released on dvd. Ours is a very dodgy quality bootleg that appears to have been mastered off of a seventeenth-generation vhs tape, which leant it a quality, both audio and visual, that was near impossible to understand and get into.

I can’t tell you anything about the artist… she’s certainly nothing special… maybe slightly this side of bland… and the song itself is fine enough, but not exactly brimful of originality… the real treat, though, is her backup singer. Man, what a voice! Somebody sign that gent up to a twenty-album deal. I’ll buy!

Pure dumb luck, really, and nothing that I can take credit for! I was watching a clip from Graham Norton’s show, and that clip automatically played next. That guy’s voice stopped me dead in my tracks, and completely knocked me out!

Apart from that album, nothing’s on my radar. Not yet, at least.

I knew that The Damned were here in NYC a few months back, recording in Brooklyn with Tony Visconti producing. Safe to assume the forthcoming album is from those sessions?

That's the one...

The Damned have announced that a new record, their 11th studio album, will be released via Search & Destroy to coincide with their upcoming 2018 Evil Spirits UK Tour. The album is their first in a decade, and is produced by Tony Visconti.

The band said that they “want to do the unexpected”, which sees the return of bassist Paul Gray to the line up.

The Evil Spirits Tour takes place 26 January – 17 February 2018

Slim Jim Phantom will be joining the band on the road in support. The Brooklyn-born rockabilly legend is renowned for his expertise as the drummer of the Stray Cats, spearheading the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s.
