It's Friday Hamiltonians, which can only mean one thing. Bring the music....

What better reason do we need than a new Jesus and Mary Chain album due to arrive in March 2017 to enjoy one of their finest moments

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1AL2...
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Sidewalking

You probably don’t need me to tell you that Bob Stanley’s compilations are generally essential purchases. For “English Weather” he has teamed up with Saint Etienne bandmate Pete Wiggs. As the liner notes state..

The autumnal sound of Britain at the turn of the 70s, looking out through wet window panes to a new decade with a mixture of melancholy and optimism for what might come next. With The Beatles gone and the pound sinking, a new and distinctive sound emerges, led by flutes and mellotrons.

It’s great. I’ve long had a strong attraction for that immediate post-hippy era - the chilly, autumnal no mans land, the hangover after the party - when it was clear the counterculture had failed with nothing to replace the shattered dreams.

Most of the songs on “English Weather” are new to me. ‘Windfall’ by Offspring is a one off 1972 single on RCA (whose catalogue number RCA 2198 is one away from Bowie’s Starman (RCA 2199)) and is a great example of the gems to be found on “English Weather”….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s_Z5...
Offspring - Windfall

When You're Young eh? I remember that. At least I think so...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdl8h...
The Jam - When You're Young

This came out when I was young….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgaB9...
Killing Joke - Requiem

Ziggy played guitar…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq8gG...
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

Have a wonderful weekend

CQM | 242 comments It's Friday and I'm already thirsty and counting down the hours to the pub. In that spirit here are some boozy songs.
I could of course list 10, 20, 30 songs of boozy delights and might have to return next week to continue.

First up some desperation from...
Lee Hazlewood - After Six
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXLw9...

Next up some desperation from...
Uncle Tupelo - I Got Drunk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5fmR...

Next up some silliness from...
Divine Comedy - Drinknig Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFGFJ...

Next up some shenanegins from...
The Dubliners - Seven Drunken Nights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CWII...

Finally some lascivious behaviour from...
Flanders and Swann - Have Some Madeira, M'Dear
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW_zi...

Drink responsibly!

Wonderful selections CQM - you're an inspiration

Happy Friday - and happy drinking

I hope to post a five myself later but today is looking a little unpredictable at present.

No rhyme nor reason to these except I have listened to them in the last half hour or so...

The Boys — Brickfield Nights
Frank Turner — Photosynthesis
Teenage Fanclub — Don't Look Back
David Bowie — Baal's Hymn
The Proclaimers — Sunshine On Leith

I trust the beer is going down a treat CQM - just poised to crack open a bottle of overpriced crafty ale

Drink today and drown all sorrow,
You shall perhaps not do't tomorrow.
Best while you have it, use your breath;
There is no drinking after death.

It's Friiiiiiiday....

70s Sunday afternoons *sigh* and after The Big Match, with Brian Moore (RIP), came...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMEqk...
John Barry - The Persuaders Theme

Another psych folk classic from the wonderful Fuzzy Felt Folk comp...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ulFY...
The Barbara Moore Singers - Singing Low

A firm favourite with the two teenage kids in my life (which to my mind is a sign of impeccable parenting)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JWGX...
David Bowie - Oh! You Pretty Things

New Paddy! How many unreleased gems must he have lying about? This lament for a hidden (lost?) America shimmers with an aching beauty. The immigrant, as you well know, is drawn to freedom. Ain’t that the truth..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jbdj...
Prefab Sprout - America

Does life get any more beautiful and life reaffirming than Django in full flow?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BytMZ...
Django Reinhardt - I Can't Give You Anything But Love

Have a wonderful weekend

Friday and that means only one thing

Here’s BAD at their most wonderfully inventive with Mick Jones pulling out all the stops. Shame Strummer didn’t want to take The Clash in this direction...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h8zs...
Big Audio Dynamite - Rush

Off to see the mighty Half Man Half Biscuit with my son tonight and hoping we might hear 27 Yards Of Dental Floss...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNjKD...
Half Man Half Biscuit - 27 Yards Of Dental Floss

Never truer...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYnro...
Lou Reed - Busload of Faith

I recently finished watching all five seasons of Breaking Bad which was every bit as good as friends told me it is. I should do a five dedicated to BB, as the music is superb, however for now here’s one of the hundreds of great tracks that found its way onto the programme…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV46O...
Yellow Man - Zungguzungguguzungguzeng

And finally a bit of blue-eyed soulful pop to send you on your way with a spring in your step

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBmBA...
The Rascals - A Beautiful Morning

Have a wonderful weekend

The Pretenders, knocking out top tuneage for decades...

Have a wonderful weekend Hamiltonian sistren and brethren

CQM | 242 comments Delaney and Bonnie - Move 'em Out
There are so many great Delaney and Bonnie track but I've decided to go for this slight but jaunty tale of cuckolding because I can't get it out of my head at the moment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtGFX...

Faces - Country Comforts live
The Faces covering a Bernie Taupin Elton John song which sounds like it could have come straight from the pen of Ronnie Lane.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY5Z2...

Humble Pie - Every Mother's Son
Steve Marriot gets mellow and countryfied with his post Small Faces mob.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLehj...

Dillard and Clark Don't Let Me Down
I'm not a fan of the Beatles but if I had to pick a song of theirs it would always be this one. So here it is by Gene Clark and Doug Dillard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOdxN...

Mama Cass - The Good Times are Coming
I've always had a penchant for real 70's middle of the road country tinged stuff and film/TV themes so here is Mama Cass singing the lovely theme tune to Monty Walsh. Added bonus you get to look at Lee Marvin while listening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRfcW...
The Cramps - I Ain't Nuthin' But a Gorehound

All I ever do is fool around

If this doesn’t splice your mainbrace then it’s back to nautical school for you...

The Count Five - Psychotic Reaction

Hard not to love this. Hard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdWXE...
13th Floor Elevators - Levitation

I saw The Stranglers on Tuesday night though mainly went to see the wonderful Ruts DC but, as it turned out, was also very impressed by The Stranglers and enjoyed it very much. This was a song I barely remembered but which sounded particularly fine…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYQTL...
The Stranglers - Always The Sun

And the aforementioned Ruts DC were as great as usual…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0t1S...
Ruts DC - Kill The Pain

CQM | 242 comments Just beautiful and heartbreaking...
Magnetic Fields - Busby Berkley Dreams
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQvWV...

Gram and co give the first airing of a Stones classic.
The Flying Burrito Brothers - Wild Horses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZHJa...

Hugely underrated pop classics came from this band like no other in the late eighties and early nineties.
Crowded House - Don't Dream it's Over
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSLKI...

Late eighties via late sixties from the mods who also brought us an interesting cover of the Cadburys flake tune.
The Clique - She Doesn't Need You Anymore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi9tC...

No Friday is complete with a little nod in the direction of Ronnie Lane. The Small Faces at their early raucous best.
The Small Faces - You Need Loving

Rock on!

CQM | 242 comments CQM ever alert to changing moods and fashions in the music world presents his current favourite song this brand new, well 1968, release from Elyse Weinberg. Check out some guy called Neil Young on guitar, he's gonna make some waves or CQM is no judge.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQu6I...

Currently reading John Mortimer's Paradise Postponed and one of the characters plays in a trad jazz band who want to play nothing but pure New Orleans jazz so it would be silly not to have a bit of the original purist Ken Colyer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oU8q...

Scott Walker at his most jovial. That's third on my list of least likely sentences ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcHoT...

This is a truly beautiful slice of melancholy from the great Fred Neil. Hard to believe this was recorded as long ago as 1965, still sounds very contemporary.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYl5v...

To finish it's another Fred Neil song, Dolphins. I'm not evangelical about Tim Buckley like a lot of people but this is a magnificent performance on the Whistle Test.

Rock on you funky dog sh#ts!

I don't know that I'd say I was delighted but I'll certainly echo the fact I thought it was going to be an unmitigated disaster.
If you ask me the way our political scene is at the moment it's every man for himself and I for one am one more vote away from running to the hills and living off the food I find in discarded Tesco sandwich boxes.

Ah, Citizen Smith - what a classic

Freedom for Tooting

Politically I would say things are not so bad.

Overall, in the Brexit heartlands older voters took against Jeremy Corbyn and backed the Tories BUT in the more diverse, urban areas young people backed the JC vision to the hilt and rejected May’s hard brexit narrative.

The situation before the election looked bleak and hopeless, now - at last - there's a renewed sense of hope and it's palpable

The progressives are on the front foot again - which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your political leanings.

message 832: by CQM (new)

CQM | 242 comments I'm all for mild revolution in the streets, I wouldn't go so far as to utilise lamp posts but I'd definitely give May and co a swift boot up the jacksie. I'm afraid I don't reckon much on any of the lot clogging up the ballot papers this time round if I'm honest. I think Corbyn is a decent enough chap and the best of the lot but if I had anything I wanted running I'm not sure any off the lot we currently call politicians would be on speed dial.

message 836: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Chiming in as an American baffled by your election process, my main concern is that you end up with a PM who won't be to Trump what Thatcher was to Reagan, or Blair was to Bush... ie: an enabler of lap dog proportions. I understand that Corbyn would never be assume that role, but would May now be restricted in her ability to give Trump a free pass?

message 837: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb | 4546 comments Mod
As things stand May is not really able to do much. She has entered into a Faustian pact with a northern Irish party called the DUP - better known as the political wing of the 17th Century. They are truly odious. How long it will last remains to be seen. Either way, it seems unlikely that May is going to be doing too much that is controversial as she lacks the majority.

Trump is pretty toxic here and whilst she won't do anything that might offend him, I doubt she'd to anything that might be seen as cosying up to him.

Plus of course, Trump seems a little distracted, at least for now, with issues on the home front

message 838: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Thanks very much for the curious blend of reassurance and alarm. As someone once said, what utterly strange times we're living in.

I'd read up yesterday on the DUP, and found it quite unsettling in its backwards vision.

There's a new feature-length documentary about Mick Ronson, titled Behind Bowie, which seems to chronicle his remarkable life quite nicely and with all the reverence due. I say seems to because I've yet to watch the entire film.

It suddenly appeared on Vimeo a couple weeks ago, but rapidly disappeared offline. Fortunately, I was able to download it before it vanished, so I have a pristine digital copy that I'd be happy to share somehow if you can't find it on view elsewhere.
