I'm no expert when it comes to skiffle, I have this little box set https://www.amazon.co.uk/Washboards-F... which is pretty good. If I'm honest I find a lot of skiffle pretty bloody awful but grew up listening to Ken Colyer in the car on long journeys and love his skiffle and jazz bands. Maybe I'm biased but I'd just go for a Colyer collection.

It's that time again Hamiltonians

A pleasing hybrid of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Tindersticks and other such noir torch song merchants. I’ve only just come across the album but so far so grooveee..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz2MY...
Warhaus - The Good Lie

On Wednesday night I was out at an event to mark the release of Resonators third album “Imaginary People” which was predictably joyous and life reaffirming. Here’s why...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYZ9Q...
Resonators - Imaginary People

I’m still getting to grips with the new album from Ruts DC which is a huge departure from their reggae/dub flavoured material. This new one is Rock with a capital R. My kids like it which I think is a good thing…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4irIU...
Ruts DC - Music Must Destroy

And talking of old punks, The Lurkers are back, now trading under the moniker The Lurkers GLM (and not to be confused with Arturo Bassick’s version of the band which has no original members) with a new album. Is it any good? Dunno yet, but it sounds very promising…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGtgC...
The Lurkers GLM - The Future's Calling

And finally here’s a bit of angelic loveliness from Angel Olsen…

Hamiltonians, It's Friday, which can only mean one thing...

New Haines! Today! Let’s Smash the System! This is a ridiculously great video and a top notch tune from Uncle Luke…

I was reminded about the wonder of Sweet Lorraine whilst rewatching Barry Levinson’s superb ‘Tin Men’...

And, as I work my way through Narcos on Netflix, this lovely tune is really getting under my skin…

The new album by Teenage Fanclub is really hitting the spot, and here’s a good example of why…

Teenage Fanclub - Connected to Life

And to finish off, yet another very welcome release, this time from tip top pop maverick, the Wildman of Wivenhoe, Martin Newell (yours for just £6) under his Cleaners From Venus monkier 'The Last Boy In The Locarno’.

It’s gonna be a gorgeous day…

It's Friday Hamiltonians. Huzzah.

This song needed a video, so I made one...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMntM...
Luke Haines - Marc Bolan Blues

My belated investigations into Descendents has prompted a listen to their latest LP. Bracing, melodic and thoughtful, or business as usual...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ietY8...
Descendents - Victim Of Me

I defy anyone to close their eyes and I identify this as the Rollers (albeit the Rollers after Les had moved on). I’ve just finished When the Screaming Stops: The Dark History of the Bay City Rollers by Simon Spence which prompted me to investigate some of the Rollers’ road less travelled and conclude that there’s much to enjoy on the Voxx, Ricochet and Elevator albums. Strange but true.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=901Za...
Bay City Rollers - Life on the Radio

Groovy new music by Nick Waterhouse is cause for celebration. It’s time…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srNvM...

Mark put me onto the new album by The Beat (Ranking Roger version). It’s full of tunes that stand shoulder to shoulder with classic Beat tunes. Strange but true #2.

CQM | 242 comments I'm delving back into the CQM archives to show just where the young me was in the early 90's
First up a band of little or no reputation these, or indeed those, days but one I had a soft spot for. Hamiltonians will be pleased to see a little cameo from Colin Wilson's Misfits in this promo video which has turned the song on it's head for me. Who knew it was about a disaffected librarian... It's Filthy Names by Jack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zHuK...

Next up as Nigey has reminded me of them with his Luke Haines tracks it's The Auteurs with How Could I Be Wrong
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ2Ht...

Third up we have American band Buffalo Tom with probably their biggest hit and a truly depressing (but good) slice of 90's rock, it's Taillights Fade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEjmJ...

Fourth track is Belly with Gepetto, not just here because it's a great song, I also had/have a massive crush on Tanya Donelly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBi67...

And finally just in case you are getting the impression young CQM was a fey, pretentious floppy haired weed it's S*M*A*S*H (I Want to) Kill Somebody a song with some frankly jaw dropping lyrical miracles.

Can you think of a better time to escape into the warm embrace of music? Nah. Me neither...

Having recently finally finished the latest Adam Curtis doc Hypernormalisation (on iPlayer and unmissable, + now YouTube) here’s a song that gets a couple of airings and is a total classic….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FFIF...
Suicide - Dream Baby Dream

There I was, in 1998, browsing in a branch of Borders in Chicago (probably for the first and last time) and this came on in the shop. What was it? I had to know. It was brilliant. Amazing. It was Van. The Man. I still think it’s wonderful (if a bit on the long side)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBoFV...
Van Morrison - TB Sheets

I saw ABC perform the Lexicon of Love I & II the other week. Brilliant. They didn’t play this but I didn’t mind...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Klxs8...
ABC - 15 Storey Halo

What’s not to love about Matt Berry?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAagL...
Matt Berry - Accident At A Harvest Festival

I’ve been playing this now impossibly poignant Bowie tune a lot over the last couple of weeks

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Never heard that particular Van Morrison track before, so thanks for putting it under my nose. I only know his work with Them and his Veedon Fleece album, which I love. I guess it's high time to dip a bit deeper into his catalogue.

I've spent a sizeable chunk of time over the past few weeks discovering the works of John Cale, and really enjoying vast amounts of what I'm hearing. I was never what anyone would call a fan of The Velvet Underground or the solo sides of Lou Reed, so Cale's solo efforts have been quite a revelation to me.

His latest video, posted only last week, turns out to be incredibly poignant this week...

Nothing beats New Values and here’s a neglected classic from the Ig...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeRKA...
Iggy Pop - The Endless Sea

Dunno how many people have The Barmy Army's The English Disease On-U Sound album but it’s a great record of late 80s football anthems celebrating the likes of Dalglish, Alan Devonshire, Vinny Jones and many more. This is a corker that almost makes me wish I was a Liverpool supporter...

Not generally a fan of sampling, but that particular track was sampled to great effect in Bottle Rocket by The Go! Greetings Hamiltonians, it's Friday which can mean only one thing.....

It’s taken me quite a while to cotton to Mike N’s amazing back catalogue, but amazing is what it is and, by way of example, check out this rendition of ‘In The Still Of The Night’…….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eseWi...
Michael Nesmith - In The Still Of The Night

I’m not much of a Pete Doherty fan but somehow or another I stumbled across this latest album and I like it, not least this fabulous little ditty, not least because it references Brighton Rock…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUUbp...
Peter Doherty - Kolly Kibber

I’m also not much of a Rumer fan but somehow or another I stumbled across her recent album of Bacharach & David covers ‘This Girl's In Love’ and whilst it does nothing you wouldn’t expect it is quite brilliant, masterful songs + highly competent singer = pop bliss

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnck1...
Rumer - Walk On By

I’ve also recently acquired three boxsets of Doo Wop courtesy of Rhino and what a treat it is. I always thought I probably loved Doo Wop and now I have categorical proof positive. Doo Wop like totally rules

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8g4Q...
The Crows - Gee

A few years back, after extensive investigation in Lovers Rock, I also established I flipping love that too. I was scornful of it back in the day but I know realise it was another musical mutation that could probably only have happened in the London melting pot. It’s genius. Isn’t it Barry?

Wayhay, it's Friiiiiday....

This week I re-watched the 2011 film adaptation of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” directed by Tomas Alfredson and with one of the all time great casts. Every bit as good as the first time round, perhaps even better. I love it. One of the best films of this century. No doubt. Smiley rules. This 70s version of La Mer, accompanying the final scene, is cinematic perfection...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftcnA...
Julio Iglesias - La Mer

One of those tunes by music library KPM that I came across on a compilation of their library sounds. This is a KPM corker..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i6Cp...
Keith Mansfield - Funky Fanfare

And this tune features on the wonderful Bob Stanley comp ‘Soho Confidential’. A cha cha cha version of the theme to The Third Man. Does life get any better?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF-Ex...
Edmundo Ros - Harry Lime Cha Cha Cha

How about a classic from Tindersticks? Yes, go on then. City Sickness. It’s just wonderful...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c7QR...
Tindersticks - City Sickness

And finally, another superb compilation I have only acquired “Fuzzy Felt Folk” which I recommend to anyone who likes quirky, slightly creepy, folk sounds. Here’s Reg Tilsley with The Troll. This has got the lot… folk, easy listening, psych and a whole hunk of plain weird. I love it...

Greetings Hamiltonians

Roy Wood at Theatre Royal Brighton - 5 Feb 2017

This week I’m choosing music by artists I’ve seen play live in the last few weeks

On Sunday I had the great pleasure of seeing Roy Wood live. The setlist was mainly drawn from his biggest selling songs for The Move and Wizzard. Needless to say it was a wonderful night. Here’s a couple of highlights...

Wizzard - See My Baby Jive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMG8x...
The Move - Flowers In The Rain

Do not miss Jim Jones play live should you have the good fortune of having him and his Righteous Mind rock up in your town. Here’s why...

Jim Jones and the Righteous Mind - Till It’s All Gone

Likewise the psych goodness of Temples is blimming marvellous

Temples - Strange Or Be Forgotten

And of course Primal Scream are always a good night out

Primal Scream - It’s Alright, It’s OK

Have a wonderful weekend

Thanks Susan

No, we haven't done any group reads beyond our discussions about Patrick Hamilton's books and plays. That said, if anyone has any ideas then post away.

Have a good weekend too Susan

Have you seen Roy Wood live before, Nigeyb? My favourite song of his is My Dear Elaine.

My first time Ruth - but hopefully not my last

"Dear Elaine" is indeed a wonderful song as is most of "Boulders"

I’ve only just come across Simon Warner and his 1997 orchestral pop album "Waiting Rooms" which is chock full of sleazy tales of lascivious landladies and jobsworth public transport officials. The album sunk without trace but a Facebook fanpage is testimony to its enduring appeal. I picked it up for a fiver on Discogs and am very glad I did. His theatrical style evokes Barry Ryan, Jacques Brel, Anthony Newley, 60s era Scott Walker etc.

Simon Warner - Decorating

Put on your make up, apply it with care. Sagely advice from BBR, and Sarah Nixey has the voice of an angel

Black Box Recorder - Goodnight Kiss

Andy Miller, author of "The Year of Reading Dangerously” wakes up to this song everyday. Good choice Andy. And if you have yet to experience the joys of the “Fuzzy Felt Folk” comp, what are you playing at?

Basil Kirchin feat Lindsey Moore - I Start Counting

Watching Breaking Bad (finally), and it reminded me of the majesty of Magic Arrow by Timber Timbre. Looking forward to some new TT in 2017..

Timber Timbre - Magic Arrow

Could a song be any more sixties and whimsical?

Donovan - The Tinker And The Crab

Have a wonderful weekend

CQM | 242 comments The theme tune from Sam Peckinpah's oddest and I think best film The Ballad of Cable Hogue. There is a regular recorded version but I prefer the one from the film with little interjections from Jason Robards.
Tomorrow is the Song I Sing - Richard Gillis and Jerry Goldsmith

The wonderful Animals that Swim with their tale of car crashes, hospital and film stars. I like a drink as much as any man too..
Pink Carnations - Animals that Swim

North London country next, Camden's finest pedal steel and tassel jacket combo.
Restless - The Rockingbirds

Hobo life with Lee Hazlewood next, if only hobo life could be guaranteed this excellent I'd be riding the rails come tonight.
Hej, Me I'm Riding - Lee Hazlewood

And because I now feel like becoming a hobo wandering the wide open expanses of South London this beautiful song which always brings a tear to my throat and a lump to my eye.
I'll Be Here in the Morning - Townes Van Zandt

I would have gone for Only One Flower but they don't seem to have it on youtube. Restless is pretty good stand in though.
