Finally got my mitts on Mbongwana Star...

...and it’s well groovy

Mbongwana Star - Malukayi

I am heartened to hear that Barrington Levy is imminently about to release a new acoustic album. Who doesn’t love this classic…?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_let...
Barrington Levy - Here I Come

Whilst perusing the line up of the inaugural Together The People festival in Brighton in September I came across a new name... Dizraeli and the Small Gods.. being a curious type I listened to a few tunes and was happy to discover there’s lots to love. Like....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycu4R...
Dizraeli and the Small Gods - Never Mind

For no good reason I’ve been enjoying a bit of Fatboy Slim over the last few days and was reminded how much fun this track is…

Fatboy Slim - Don't Let the Man Get You Down

And finally, one of the loveliest things the Manics ever did…

Have a great weekend Hamiltonians.

It’s that time again. Here’s five tunes to kickstart your weekend…

I’ve yet to see “The Falling” by Carol Morley but I have finally got my mitts on Tracey Thorn’s soundtrack and it’s a gorgeous thing…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-wQB...
Tracey Thorn - Follow Me Down

A new album by the Dub Pistols is always a cause for celebration so, with a newish album "Return Of The Pistoleros” recently released, let’s celebrate….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyF2n...
Dub Pistols - Pistoleros

A new album by the Mael brothers is also always a cause for celebration so, with a newish album, on which they collaborate with Franz Ferdinand as FFS, and called “FFS”, let’s celebrate with the loveliest track on the album...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQNYR...
FFS - Little Guy from the Suburbs

I had a lovely evening with Eddie Argos earlier in the week and that reminded me of the wonder of Art Brut. Let’s remind ourselves just how great they are and how it’s been too long since they gave us any new music…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zk_N...
Art Brut - Pump Up The Volume

And finally the news that Band Of Holy Joy are coming to Brighton later in the year is the only prompt I need to remind you of what makes them so bloody fantastic...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-6d-...
Band Of Holy Joy - I Have Travelled the Buses Late at Night

Like you need me to remind you that margin walkers and midnight drifters, Band of Holy Joy have wandered liminal landscapes of their own making for three decades now. The weirdness and wildness of the landscape they stagger through, the askew vision like a crash between Coleridge, Brecht and David Peace, the literary allusions and poetry, the strangeness of it all. A cultural piracy raiding doomed melancholy and gentrified mediocrity.

Have a great weekend

Hey ho Hamiltonians let’s go with another five tunes to get the weekend underway.

I’m going to be doing some DJing at a pub in August and that has got me thinking about classic uplifting sounds that would make an evening in a pub even more enjoyable. Here’s five contenders…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPely...
Arrows - Touch Too Much

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XboE3...
Sir Douglas Quintet - She’s about a mover

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWYIM...
Georgie Fame - Somebody Stole my thunder

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwR53...
Elvis Presley - Good Rockin’ Tonight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFw0Q...
The B-52's - Planet Claire

Have a great weekend

It's a crowded field, however if you force me, I will tell you that my favourite all time song by Dexys / Dexys Midnight Runners is…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZwWn...
Dexys Midnight Runners - There, There My Dear

Another song I never tire of is New York Groove by the blimmin marvellous Hello…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWktW...
Hello - New York Groove

Do you like cover versions? Hell yeah, who doesn’t. This version of Mr Bowie’s “Heroes” gets me cutting a rug every flipping time and indeed all right dancing people the world over…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6FXR...
Stereo Total - “Heroes” (David Bowie cover)

Not enough Bowie for ya? Sheesh. Have some Queen Bitch too then you greedy swine…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbDbQ...
David Bowie - Queen Bitch

Ever stopped to consider who wrote all those genius sports theme tunes? The answer, in case you don’t know, is Keith Mansfield. Here he is with with KPM All Stars live at Jazz Cafe in London town...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sOKu...
Keith Mansfield - UK Sports Theme Medley: Theme from 'The Big Match'/BBC Wimbledon Tennis/BBC Athletics/'Grandstand' (with KPM All Stars - live at Jazz Cafe)

^ And if that doesn’t get you cartwheeling round the room in delight then seek medical attention as a matter of urgency

Have a great weekend

Over and out

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments Not to put too fine a point on it, Nige, but, at my age, cartwheeling round the room in delight would most definitely end in urgent medical attention.

Otherwise, thanks for the choon selection!

^ Thanks Mark - yeah, perhaps I was overstating the flexibility and energy levels of the PHAS denizens.

My cartwheeling days are long gone too.

message 662: by Mark (new)

Mark Rubenstein | 1510 comments I'm tempted to take it further and say that 'There There My Dear' is probably my favourite song from the entire decade of the 1980s. It might not be the best, but there are certainly none better. There's an absolutely storming live version on youtube... the whole tension/release of the middle bit on this version is incredible...

Hello groovers, it’s Friday, the sun is shining so let’s look forward to the weekend with an uplifting musical accompaniment.

What better way to kick things off than with a slice of Bo Diddley? Crank this beauty up...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmoFe...
Bo Diddley - Bring It To Jerome

You like the blues? You wanna hear it was a meaty glam stomp drum beat? Course you do. This will enrich your life, especially if you dance to it and join in on the chorus...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-k9V...
The Black Keys - Howlin' For You

I’m really enjoying the new album from Ezra Furman - very diverse and full of top notch tuneage. Here’s an earlier tune from Ezra Furman, it’s a sublime Summer sound and one of my favourites…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysPnz...
Ezra Furman - My Zero

Sometimes all you need is a bit of classic psych, and it simply doesn’t get any better than "You're Gonna Miss Me”...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OytJ...
13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me

I have recently finished watching Season One of True Detective. Very powerful and engrossing TV it is too. It is impossible to hear The Handsome Family at the start of each eight episodes without falling in love with….

Cozy Powell? Of course. But before him there was the mighty Sandy Nelson. "Let There Be Drums" indeed

It's Friday Hamiltonians. Let's mark it the only way we now how.

Somedays I am completely convinced that this is the finest pop song of all time….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d6iR...
Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World

…and this is another. A wonderful tribute to the amazing Jonathan Richman...

Talking of Jonathan Richman, here is with the Modern Lovers singing about Pablo Picasso (never called an asshole as you know)...

My ongoing investigation in the Mod revival bands continues apace. This is still the greatest song of the genre…

The Chords - Maybe Tomorrow

And finally it’s time to relax, and from the wonderful “Conducts 101 Strings” here’s the mighty Les Baxter…

Les Baxter - A Taste Of Soul

The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra - Fu Manchu

You want more of that tasty pop goodness. Here’s Pugwash…

Having just read the highly recommended “You Never Give Me Your Money: The Battle For The Soul Of The Beatles” by Peter Doggett, I have been inspired to delve into solo work by The Beatles and belatedly discovered the genius of “Ram” where Paul McCartney invents shambolic indie. Strange but true. Smile away…

Here’s the utterly glamtastic “Random Name Generator” by Wilco from their new “Star Wars” album..

message 672: by Susan (new)

Susan | 272 comments Paul's early solo work suffered a lot of unfair criticism. You look back and think how sexist and just unbelievable the vitriol aimed at him and Linda (and John and Yoko) was. Of course, John being so miffed at him then and mouthing off so publicly didn't help either. However, by the mid Seventies he did what he wanted and got his career back on track. Despite the critics though, McCartney, Ram and Wild Life are all albums I play a lot in the car.

It’s #Friday Hamiltonians & here’s yer #fiveforfriday…

Let’s kick things off in fine style with my friends band The Hillmans and the opening track to their tip top new long player “Dog Man” in a video which features a dog. My dog. I should add the video is nothing to do with The Hillmans and was just an excuse for me to post a bit of footage of my dog, to the accompaniment of The Hillmans. It is a great tune…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKp23...
The Hillmans - Dog Man

You don’t need me to tell you that “This Is England 90” maintains the usual high standards (so far at least) of the previous series. It’s a great blend of the black Meadows humour and the darker side of life. Not sure that people were dancing to the Nigerian synth-funk maverick William Onyeabor at barbecues in the east Midlands in 1990 though however it did remind of the genius of “Fantastic Man”...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyL4c...
William Onyeabor - Fantastic Man

Oh and here’s “Fantastic Man” the documentary about William Onyeabor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiaRp...

A new album by Robert Forster is always a cause for celebration and first impressions of “Songs To Play” are very positive….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-MPD...
Robert Forster - Let Me Imagine You

A new album by Holly Golightly is also always a cause for celebration and "Slowtown Now!” - out on Damaged Goods Records - seems particularly fine. And this is a magnificent video too…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFad7...
Holly Golightly - Slowtown

I'm a fan of Lana del Rey. New album “Honeymoon” is yet more woozy, ethereal dream pop which does nothing different from the first two albums except, perhaps, to crank up the hazy dreaminess making it even more gorgeously Lynchian. It might just be her best album yet. This one keeps going round and round in my head...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAGjX...
Lana Del Rey - Salvatore

That weren't no DJ that was HAZY COSMIC JIVE

I am currently reading - and loving - “Here Comes Everybody” by James Fearnley. It’s James’s account of being a member of The Pogues.

Upon being told that he was out of the band, Shane MacGowan enquired 'What took you so long?’

If you liked The Pogues then “Here Comes Everybody” is fascinating, and if you didn't… well actually, is there anyone out there who didn't like The Pogues? Thought not. Here’s Fiesta…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pYI9...
The Pogues - Fiesta

If that doesn’t get you whirling like a dervish then seek urgent medical attention. By the by “Rum, Sodomy & the Lash” was released just over 30 years ago. Where has the time gone?

And stick with Shane MacGowan, here’s a lost classic from the Nips, it’s their fourth single from 1981, which was clearly influenced by the then-current Mod revival and which it references towards the end of the song…

Sing a happy song
Happy mods, happy hippies
Always stoned, always tripping
Ian Page says good boys win
But I can only live by sin
Ian Page says wear a suit
Keep your pockets full of spending loot
Everything's gonna be all right
The mods are gonna dance all through the night
They're happy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX1Cz...
The Nips - Happy Song

And, so, with the release of a brand spanking new album by Robert Forster let’s celebrate the majesty of The Go Betweens right here with the majestic Right Here...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqtTd...
The Go Betweens - Right Here

Pop music simply doesn’t get any better

I’ve been listening to a fair bit of The Cure over the last couple of days. “A Forest” is sounding even more magnificent than ever…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGT4V...
The Cure - A Forest

What a bass line.

That weren't no DJ that was HAZY COSMIC JIVE

Let’s kick off this week’s five with some honest to goodness 21st century punk rock from those fine fellows FIDLAR...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztlZq...
FIDLAR - West Coast

I love a cover version. I especially love a Rolling Stones cover version. There’s a few contenders for best cover of "Gimme Shelter" but this must surely be one of the best…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2hkT...
Ruth Copeland - Gimme Shelter

It’s been too long since HMHB have featured in these fives and I feel secure in the knowledge we can all relate to this…..

I’m so desolate, I’m so all alone
I feel arthritic in every single bone
I’ve got a mynah bird, it does nothing but moan
For you I’d lose my self-esteem
For you I’d lose my self-esteem
For Crewe I’d use Junction 16

Yes. It's "Stuck Up a Hornbeam”…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHXQ_...
Half Man Half Biscuit - Stuck Up a Hornbeam

There’s also a few contenders for best cover version of "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone” however I’m saying that accolade goes to mod titans The Flies…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tifOC...
The Flies - (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone

The enjoyable BBC4 documentary on indie music “Music for Misfits” reminded me of one of my all time favourite songs ever ever ever and it’s the perfect way to round off this week’s five….”Oh my magpie eyes are hungry for the prize….”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnE8E...
The Loft - Up The Hill And Down The Slope

That’s all folks. Have a tip top weekend.

It’s Friday and here’s yer Five for Friday

I’m still buzzing from another wonderful evening with Ruts DC last week. Here’s a song that still sounds brilliant and is coincidentally also the title of a book about The Ruts/Ruts DC

Ruts DC live at Komedia, Brighton - 21 October 2015

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUWyL...
The Ruts - Love In Vain

I’m enjoying a long, slow trawl through the back catalogue of Low. Here’s a gem for ya...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFDqB...
Low - Lazy

I also felt inspired to create a mix that aimed for an early 70s, mournful, melancholy, wistful, post-hippy comedown vibe. Here it is...

https://www.mixcloud.com/nigeyb/hazy-...

I’m hoping you’ll be able to smell the unmistakeable tang of a wet Afghan goat, partially masked by patchouli and joss sticks, whilst a news bulletin reports the latest activity of urban guerilla’s The Angry Brigade. Needless to say, it features comedown classic...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwu0M...
The Rolling Stones - Winter

Band of Holy Joy @ The Prince Albert, Brighton - Saturday 24 October 2015

On the live music front I went to see Band of Holy Joy last weekend. Their new album "The Land of Holy Joy” is a stunner. Here’s the title track...

And finally, life is better with Eno..

I’ve not read Elvis Costello’s new autobiography but its mere mention sends me scampering back to his prodigious discography. He was pretty much untouchable through the late 70s/early 80s….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab_IO...
Elvis Costello - (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes

On a more low key tip, I’ve been really enjoying the neo classical cello driven splendour of Julia Kent’s “Asperities” long player

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEHKx...
Julia Kent - Invitation to the Voyage

I dunno exactly what’s prompted a bit of a delve into the Nips back catalogue, probably that James Fearnley book I read recently, anyway no one needs much of an excuse to dust off Gabrielle...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bDDA...
The Nips - Gabrielle

And the Band of Holy Joy continue to beguile. Here’s a song I’ve only just discovered "And Then the Real Thing Comes Along"

That weren’t no DJ that was HAZY COSMIC JIVE

Giuda, the wonderful Roman glam bovver boys, are back with another slice of neo-Glam perfection - and they are playing live at The Lexington in London to launch their new album if you’re around for that one. Here’s “Roll The Balls”, one of their best yet….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUL8B...
Giuda - Roll The Balls

Unquestionably the best version of Jackson - and this video is an absolute corker….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTsRd...
Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood - Jackson

This week I finished the book “Sick On You”. The Hollywood Brats formed in the early 1970s and split up in 1974. “Sick On You” is singer Andrew Matheson’s highly amusing account of their misadventures. The popular narrative, with hindsight, is that the Brats were to influence the London punk scene of a few years hence, and that the world wasn’t ready for their flamboyance and aggressive musical approach. I’m not so convinced however I am sure that, on their night, they were a lot of fun, and the song “Sick on You” is a bonafide proto-punk classic (and which Brats keyboard player Casino Steel took with him to his subsequent punk inspired band The Boys)….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O_0w...
Hollywood Brats - Sick On You

Like most of you, I discovered this through Reservoir Dogs. Takes me days to get this out of my head whenever I listen to it...

It’s #Friday & here’s yer #fiveforfriday from #HazyCosmicJive

That weren’t no DJ that was HAZY COSMIC JIVE

At the moment I am belting out "Mein Herr" when alone in the car. A great song to sing along to. Go on. Give it a try. The clip below has the lyrics too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfFWO...
Mein Herr - Liza Minnelli

A new tune by David Bowie. Hurrah. This is much better than “Sue” which, to my ears, was a jazz improv mess - this is along similar lines but, crucially, it's a song and the jazzy improv bits work in the service of the song. I am enjoying listening to this and getting familiar with it. It augers very well for the forthcoming album. I love the way the whole song changes at 4:30 with a bit that could be straight off, say, The Man Who Sold The World Album. It could only be one "Rock Star" making this music - and he’s sounding as vital as ever...

David Bowie - Blackstar

A wonderfully life reaffirming performance of “Hello” by Adele by Jimmy Fallon, Adele & The Roots just with classroom instruments

Jimmy Fallon, Adele & The Roots - Hello

With Xmas looming I’m gonna slip this in. The greatest Xmas song that isn’t actually a Xmas song and so is legitimate to include in late November. Recorded in 1966, it was an unreleased single that was a collaboration with Twice As Much. It’s absolutely magical...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCcBE...
Vashti Bunyan - Coldest Night Of The Year

And finally another low key beaut. It was Shane Meadows who got me into the late, great Gavin Clark...

Gavin Clark - Open & Shut Case

Ten ten til we do it again

Have a great weekend Hamiltonians

Happy new year Hamiltonians - here’s to a culturally rich and diverse and stimulating 2016

It’s #Friday & here’s yer #fiveforfriday

I love this re-work of Virginia Plain. Admittedly not that different from the original but who wouldn’t say yes to a slightly longer, slightly beefed up Virginia Plain? No one I’d want to know. It’s a winner….

Roxy Music - Virginia Plain (Headman Re-work)

And with “Blackstar” the new Bowie album looming on the horizon let’s have a classic Bowie tune...

David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World

2015 saw the return of New Order something like their very best so, to celebrate, here’s one of their (many) very finest moments...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc1ld...
New Order - Thieves Like Us

In 2015 Britain tragically lost one of its true originals, Gavin Clark. At just 46 years old, he unexpectedly passed away at home. Gavin Clark’s work was well received critically, if not commercially, and as well as solo material he released records with Sunhouse, who were signed by the then A&R and now successful author John Niven, and afterwards with his folk trio Clayhill. While both acts made their dents, it was his work with UNKLE that would reach the most people. Who was the man behind that voice? And it was this successful collaboration that led to the formation of friendships with Pablo Clements and James Griffiths, the other musicians behind this ambitious posthumous release, the Evangelist. A couple of weeks back the Evangelist album landed. Here’s the wonderful “Whirlwind Of Rubbish”….

Evangelist - Whirlwind Of Rubbish

And finally one of my (many) favourite tunes from 2015. Here’s Kurt Vile with “Pretty Pimpin”….

Happy new year

Yours in music

Greg | 159 comments Happy New Year to you Nigeyb and to all. Have a great 2016.

Wonderful selection there Nigeyb, especially Roxy.

I spent the first day of the year, a beautiful sunny day, home alone with The Who Live At Leeds. I feel great! That album played LOAD really clears the head for a positive mindset for the year ahead.
