Val Thanks David.
I always listen to your choices (eventually) and you usually come up with something I don't know and want to hear again. I love that version of "Little Red Corvette".

Greg, I know more of yours and they often act as reminders; Taj Mahal gets played in the car next trip.

Patrick, nothing, but it keeps the chit-chat off the main thread.

Thanks all for the latest choices. I'm just back from End Of The Road festival where The Flaming Lips were the star turns. Wonderful.

So it’s that time again and here’s a selection of top tuneage to kickstart your weekend.

Joy is unconfined as the new album by Pete Williams new album “Roughnecks and Roustabouts” is available to download on Pete’s PledgeMuisc page. Something I strongly recommend you do.

Here’s a track from it. It’s called “People”. I knocked up this video too…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j4Sj...

Pete Williams - People

I’ve been listening to a lot of music by the Head brothers recently, especially the Pale Fountains and Shack, and also the peerless “Magical World of the Strands” from whence comes this beaut…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04ueA...

Michael Head and the Strands - And Luna

Another artist who has been popping up on the nigeyb turntable is Glen Campbell. She’ll laugh when she reads the part that says I’m leaving…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUg5p...

Glen Campbell - By The Time I Get To Phoenix

Here’s the haunting timeless simplicity and beauty of “Know” by Nick Drake…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-eHB...

Nick Drake - Know

And finally, here’s the wonderful “Sister Europe” by The Psychedelic Furs…

Have a wonderful weekend Hamiltonians.

Wow. Wonderful DIY there, Nigey. That is one of the best songs on the album. I listened to The Bureau stuff on Spotify last night. What a great sound.

I'm a bit strapped for time today. I'll see if I can do Six for Saturday tomorrow.

Be excellent this weekend, Hamiltonies...

message 508: by Greg (new)

Greg | 159 comments Yes, great selection Nigeyb, three-fifths of which I knew. I became a fan of the Furs late, after a find in a sale bin of Richard Butler's debut solo album. A great album.

My five Hamil-tones this week are -

Wear Your Love Like Heaven from the album a gift from a flower to a garden by Donovan
and
Un Homme Et Une Femme "A Man and a Woman"
as these two songs are from albums I've had forever, mentioned in Julian Barnes' A Sense of an Ending, which I read recently.

Could You Be Loved - Bob Marley & The Wailers

One Good Man by Janis Joplin from a solo album Kosmic Blues

Fugitive Dub by The Skatalites Meet King Tubby

'allo 'allo 'allo, Enhance that Friday feeling with some more tip top tuneage

I've been listening to a lot of The Cramps this week, and here's one of my all time favourite tunes by The Cramps.

Well you can't dig me you can't dig nuthin, do you want the real thing, or are you just talking...?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVLpa...
The Cramps - Garbageman

I expect you need a lie down after The Cramps. Here's one of my favourite tunes by one of my favourite bands. It's Build a Fire by The KLF..

I hum this tune for all the girls I've known...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVPKs...
The KLF - Build a Fire

It's also been a week for listening to the Mescaleros. Here's the late great Joe Strummer with Get Down Moses performed at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 2006...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weH4H...
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros – Get Down Moses

My old mucker Blitzkrieg Bob turned me on to Tarrus Riley and I've been enjoying a good old rummage through his back catalogue which in turn meant I discovered this fantastic lovers rock style tune...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGuLq...
Tarrus Riley – She's Royal

And finally, another nod to a much missed musical legend, let's celebrate Lou and that Crazy Feeling...

20th Century Boy - T Rex

Land of a Thousand Dances - Wilson Pickett

The Streets of London - Ralph McTell

Over Under Sideways Down - Yardbirds

The Sky is Crying - Elmore James

Another Friday, and it's time to celebrate the weekend.

Denim and Lawrence's stinging attack on Britpop from Denim On Ice, but you knew that already didn't you?

Denim - The Great Pub Rock Revival

Here's some new music, a collaboration between Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77 on the Tru Thoughts label.

I've been revisiting Magazine a lot this week. With McGeoch gone to the Banshees "Magic, Murder And The Weather" was never likely to be amongst the band's best work but this is just a perfect pop song that is right up there with their very best...

And, finally, does anyone else remember The Untouchables (the LA band, not the British band) and Free Yourself? It was released on Stiff Records in the UK and got to number 26 in the UK singles chart in 1985 and is mightily infectious...

David | 1065 comments Good choices Nigey. Friday is improving by the minute as a result.

Prompted by a friend enjoying Randy Vanwarmer's version of this song on a TOTP re-run last night, I reminded him of the superior Barbara Jones lovers' rock version

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NfxFiv2sK4

and inspired by last week's mid-90s vibe, here are four from that era that I loved.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Yaq06FxkG0

www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIzcRqyXGdk

Each brings me back to watching TFI Friday with the kids, probably the nearest modern telly has come to the sepia-tinted days of Ready Steady Go, where the cry was "The weekend starts here".

It does.

Make it a good one.

Here's five more tracks to herald the start of the weekend.

Is this the best song by Linton Kwesi Johnson? I think it just might be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8acV...
Linton Kwesi Johnson - Want Fi Goh Rave

Now then, and by way of contrast, here's a much underrated Glam era track that is utterly poptastic...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ4Ti...
Barry Blue - Do you wanna dance?

And talking of utterly poptastic, so is Storm in a Teacup by The Fortunes. This is a particularly poignant choice because the song was co-written by Lyndsey de Paul who died yesterday. RIP LDP.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMtiu...
The Fortunes - Storm in a teacup

For reasons I cannot explain, I have been regularly enjoying this Cypress Hill classic as remade by Prince Fatty and Horseman (can't wait for the album in November).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ecv7...
Prince Fatty Feat. Horseman - Insane in the Brain

And finally, one of the all time greats, here's Jonathan Richman And The Modern Lovers...

Slave Driver - Bob Marley

Alone Again (naturally) - Gilbert O'sullivan

^ If that doesn't put a smile on your face and get you grooving round the room then seek medical attention.

Is life not quite panning out as you might have hoped? Fear not. Here's Will Powers to provide the solution.

You probably already know that Will Powers is photographer Lynn Goldsmith who slowed the recordings of her voice to make the spoken word sections sound male whilst reading from self-help manuals...

Will Powers – Adventures in Success

^ Make it happen, make it happen, make it happen.... There's a great dub version of this track for anyone that likes that sort of thing (and what right thinking person doesn't?)

This has been a good week for those that love Vic Godard, especially those that live in the South East of England. ^ This is my favourite track from "1979 Now!". In fact I love it so much I'm going to make a video for it, as all the versions on YouTube are live recordings. Watch this space.

And finally, and for no particular reason other than it's an infectious fun pop song...

Interesting, Nigeyb. I'll have to listen to this again to get the relevance to 'Laissez-faire'. There is a song I heard years ago by Loudon Wainwright, I think it was called "I Wish I Was A Lesbian" or something like it. I've never been able to track it down.

I wouldn't listen too hard Greg.

JR just makes silly rhymes throughout the song contrasting the first bar (the boring bar) and the (more exciting) Lesbian bar.

The "laissez-faire" rhyme goes...

Well the first bar things were stop and stare
But in this bar things were laissez faire
In the first bar things were stop and stare
This bar things were laissez-faire

Makes me smile - but there's no hidden profundity - just humorous lyrics and an uber catchy tune.

Sometimes that's all anyone needs.

Greg wrote: "There is a song I heard years ago by Loudon Wainwright, I think it was called "I Wish I Was A Lesbian" or something like it. I've never been able to track it down. "

Sadly I cannot help you with that. However I would add that this is an absolute classic from LW....

Loudon reflects on infant son Rufus's hunger for breast milk.

The more carnal pleasures to be had with these "gentle snowdrifts in an open field" (Dave Cousins) may be lost on the titular (see what I did there?) Rufus, as he is famously gay.

Loudon is marvellous.

Val This is not inspired by a book title, but by a book cover:
How to be both by Ali Smith, which did not win the Booker Prize this year.

The blonde: Sylvie Vartan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkcan...

The brunette: Francoise Hardy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aLoe...

Those are their best known ones in this country (and still not that well known).

The book also references:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnvFO...

The winner was The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3_Bl...
(one of the better national anthems and nice to hear it without swimming pool distortion)

and the French song 'everyone' knows, although maybe not this, the original version

Greg | 159 comments Yes, there looks like some great choices to listen to through the week. I love soundtrack music, great to work to. I'm a big fan of John Barry. Also a fan of Francoise Hardy.

O.G.D. (aka The Road Song) : Wes Montgomery

Wide Open Road: The Triffids. This one is from the 'eighties, recorded in London.

These Dreams of You: Van Morrison

Please Call Me, Baby: Tom Waits

Comin' Back to Me: Jefferson Airplane

Cheers, enjoy the weekend
