Appearance:
Gray is pretty short, standing at about 4'11". He is still growing though, as he likes to point out. He has shaggy brown hair that is usually brushed neatly as the day begins and has a way of becoming ruffled by the end. His eyes range from burnt caramel to dark chocolate depending on the lighting. He has really dark, thick eyelashes (also teased for) and tanned, olive skin. His back is criss-crossed with scars from when his father beat him as a child, so he does not often go swimming or put himself in situations that require him to reveal his bare back. It tends to unsettle people. When he is not wearing his robes, his casual clothes often include, though not limited to, jeans, old, beat up sneakers, and an easy shirt. He dresses primarily for comfort, but if he is trying to impress someone, he might wear a button-up shirt or something.
Personality: Gray is a very practical chap. He never does something contrary to the rules unless he has developed a full-proof plan so that he won't get caught. He can be very elusive and often seems to just pop up out of nowhere because of how sneaky he is. His cleverness aids his mischievous side and has saved him from a few misguided spells aimed at him in the past. He is a good-natured boy and doesn't like to hurt others and helps out when he can, but his skills lie in evasiveness rather than aggression. He enjoys puzzles and riddles, but adventures as well, so he enjoys hanging out with Gryffindor buddies as well as Ravenclaw. He is very easy to get along with for the most part, but mess with him and you may find a toad in your soup the next day.
Aside from the jokes and games, Gray is defensive as well as protective (especially of girls because that's how his mother raised him). Gray doesn't like to reveal too much about his tragic past, partly because it is just that: in the past, and partly because it unsettles a lot of people and makes them treat him differently. The way he sees it: bad things happened and, now, they are over with. Sure, he still has scars, but he would hate to be held back by such things. He likes to use the phrase, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Background: Gray has two younger sisters (neither of them are old enough to attend Hogwarts, though). His mother brought him up to know to treat girls more gently than boys (meaning no wrestling, hair-pulling, etc.). His father was never in the picture much, but that is because he was working most of the time and didn't come home until really late at night and was too exhausted to do much and usually went straight to bed or drank beer and watched television. After the fourth or fifth bottle though, Gray and his siblings were sent to their rooms for bed.
The first time Gray was beaten, it had been a week since his ninth birthday. His father had finished a bottle of tequila and Gray had forgotten his book out on the counter. He wasn't supposed to be out of his room, but he really wanted the book, so he tried to just run really quick to grab it, but his father caught him and became angry. His mother was away that week to visit with her family. When she had returned, she found out that Gray had been beaten and bloodied every day that week. She took the kids and left almost immediately afterwards, but Gray developed a tendency towards protective and resistant magic once he started showing signs of the gift. He still has scars from that week, emotionally and physically.

» Description: Cheeseball is a sweet cat and is very protective of Gray, so he will scratch most people that seem to cause him distress. He loves being petted though and can be easily won over with a nice piece of fish. Cheese does not like most boys except for Gray and likes most girls. He will hate you and hold a grudge against you if you pull his tail.
Other: He will never admit it, but he knows how to sew and cook and is very tidy (will get teased about this sometimes, but he shrugs it off in good humor).
