The reason I read this book was because it deal with music. I love music. I thought it incorporated that nicely through the whole book. I wasn't sure how well I was going to like because it was contemporary. I usually read paranormal romance or dystopian. So it was good in the since of that. I thought it taught an important lesson as well.

I don't usually read contemporary books either because I also prefer paranormal and dystopian books, but I've been trying to expand what I read. I was drawn to the music aspect of the book too and I also really liked that part. I think that if I liked contemporary books more then maybe I would have given it a higher rating, but I thought some of it was a little cheesy.

@Jalyn, this isn't an example of a good contemporary book. Just like "13 reasons why" it takes suicide and teenage problems way to lightly. For TSWSYL the beginning is very strong, but then it becomes something like: let's make everything easy for the main character because she's actually awesome and everyone around her is stupid for not liking her. Elise is a very stuck up person if you manage to read between the lines. People don't like her because she's full of herself, not because she's a geek. After all, geeks are friends with other geeks.
If you want a good and strong contemporary book try: Please Ignore Vera Dietz or Saving Francesca.

I agree, things happened way too easily for her (whose parents ground their child and then are like "sure, you can go DJ at a club where you're supposed to be 21 to enter and you wouldn't get home until 3?" Nobody's parents would be ok with that unless they were negligent, and her parents weren't). And though I think the author was trying to portray her differently, Elise does come off as full of herself.

Sorry, forgot to come back here, but yeah, I got to get that off my chest since I saw this book had only good reviews and it's really not that good, nor a good example on how to manage your life if you feel suicidal or your kid is feeling suicidal and you're reading this for research.

Chapter 12 - 16 (view spoiler)[ I knew Char and Elise wouldn't work together. Char sees her as a competition / threat as a DJ and that's the primary reason they broke up, not because Elise didn't say "I love you" to him. Pippa overreacted so much. Like, she and Char weren't exclusively dating... but I get her point on friends not hooking up with the same guy...

I understand Elise destroying Alex's poetry castle. She's protecting her by letting Alex see life isn't a fairytale and sugarcoated. I think her mom and stepdad sheltered Alex and kinda pressure her to be the best too.. Idk that's my interpretation on the poetry castle being destroyed. (I also feel bad for Alex because she took an effort building it then it's destroyed.) (hide spoiler)]
