It's about a girl who lives with her uncle and aunt (I think), because she is babysitting their little red-haired boy Charlie.
Charlie then gets lost at a carnival. She is in one car (i think it was a car) and he should have been in the other one. Then his sister goes to the car the main character is in and tells her, that Charlie is in the other car, and they drive home. When they get home, she rushes up to Charlie's room, but he's not there. The father is mad at her, but when she tells him that the sister told her that Charlie was alright, the sister is in denial.
She is then send home.
And a lot of shit happens, but I can't remember any of it, except that she tried searching for Charlie.
Later, when they are all grownups, the sister apologizes to her and tells her something about the father
*plot twist*
The father abandonned the boy, because he was the only ginger kid of all their children, and he found out that the mother was cheating, so he slapped her on the day of the carnival, so she had to wear a hat all day. Then he left Charlie at the carnival and tells the sister to tell our main character that Charlie is in the other car, when he in fact is not!
I can also remember a part from the ending, when someone, who I think is our main character is married to, is in war, and he meets a gingerboy with a blurred past, who should have been Charlie, but it's never confirmed.
Oh yeah, and it all takes place in France, so I think it is a french book.
