Ender was born the third child in his family. In his community families were limited to 2 child so he was an exception. Generally the few children and families that had third children were looked down upon. Ender was born for a specific military program to teach the perfect candidates how to defend their people from aliens called "buggers." Ender hasn't had the perfect childhood; between getting picked on at school and getting bullied by his older brother Peter he can't seem to catch a break. Whenever the monitor that marks that he is still possibly going to get to be in the military program gets taken out, he feels that he has hit rock bottom. When he is told that his last test was how he would react when the monitor is taken out everyone in his family feels a sense of relief. Ender had to decide whether to leave his family and any chance he had of having a normal childhood, or dedicated the rest of his young life to this program. Eventually he decided to go to the program; that's what he was born to do.
