Ender is born in a world where only two children are allowed in each family; he was born a third. He was born for a specific military program. His parents have always followed the rules and his father even dropped his religion because they had more than two children. Even though his parents love him, it causes some family resentment because Ender was a third. Peter, his brother, continuously torments Ender because he is a third. Peter is jealous because Ender made it through the program to get to the military school. When Ender gets the news that he has completed the program to go to military school he has to decide whether or not to go. If he does he will have to leave his family behind for at least 6 years and give up all opportunities to be a regular kid. He decides to go to the military program and the only family he will truly miss is his sister Valentine.
