Liz (liz_the_librarian) Happy Monday! I hope everyone stayed warm and safe last week. It was a crazy time at the library - even though most schools were closed, we were open during most of the inclement weather. We were happy to see plenty of people still visiting the library, though!

Personally, I've been doing a lot better with reading. I am now on my eighth and ninth books: Life After Life by Kate Atkinson and Divergent by Veronica Roth. I really like the premise of Life After Life so far, though I'm not too far into the book yet. The story follows a girl born in the early nineteenth century who immediately dies after being born. Then she is born again and survives until age five, only to die then... and so on. She lives life after life, and that's about as far as I've gotten.

Divergent, of course, is a must-read. It seems like a number of people here have read it or are reading it. I've read it before so I know what to expect, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how well-written it is. YA lit can definitely be hit or miss, and this is absolutely a hit.

So now that I've prattled on, what are you reading this week?

message 2: by Jodie (new)

Jodie Reha I totally gave up on reading "Wuthering Heights," at least for now. I am now reading John Grisham's "Sycamore Row" and Wendy Wax's "While We Were Watching Downton Abbey." I confess; I needed easier reads right now!

Hi Jodie (fellow -ie)! I just purchased "While We Were Watching Downton Abbey." It is such a pretty book and I can't wait to read it. I am currently listening to "The Host" by Stepanie Meyer and am still in the middle of "The Charlemagne Pursuit" by Steve Berry which is ok.

message 4: by Julie (new)

Julie | 130 comments Last week I read The Hunger Games, and since I got the trilogy for my kindle for Christmas, I continued and read Catching Fire as well. I didn't want to like them since they're so popular, but the story does pull you in. I think I'm going to go ahead and finish the trilogy by reading Mockingjay.

I'm almost done listening to Neverwhere and The Lemon Meringue Pie Murder.

message 5: by Liz (new)

Liz (liz_the_librarian) All the -ie's are responding today. Maybe I should go by Lizzie!

Julie, I wasn't sure about The Hunger Games trilogy on my first reading, either. And I actually hated the last book at first. After talking with some others who had read it though and thinking about it some more, I realized it was a lot better than I'd originally thought. Let us know what your first impressions are; I'd be very interested to know!

I will certainly keep you posted. If it is anything like the first two books (especially if there ends up being another snow day to read) it won't take me very long to finish.

message 7: by Kyra (new)

Kyra Hay | 41 comments Liz, I still hate Mockingjay! I thought it was very boring... but I guess it was a necessary book to wrap up the story. I just finished If I Stay by Gayle Foreman and I need to find a new book for this week! I'm hoping The Fault in Our Stars comes to me soon, I have it on hold!

message 8: by Katie (new)

Katie Walton (libraryladykatie) | 16 comments I want to be honest with you guys- I made a terrible decision last night to stay up until 6 AM to finish a book. Technically I should be between books, but then I made the even worse decision to immediately start Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong. I'm writing this note to you on my lunch break at work- which means at some point I dragged myself away from my book and to work.

You may be questioning my decision making ability at this point BUT there's a lot of YA book love going on so I have to contribute.

Kyra- If you liked Shiver, Linger, and Forever you should give Raven Boys a chance. The audiobook is available on Overdrive and several of the CPL branches own hardcover books.

For the Dystopian fans-
The Chemical Chronicles by Lauren DeStefano
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Red Rising by Pierce Brown

And my favorite book-
The Selection by Kiera Cass

Traci (tardis1974) Katie wrote: "I want to be honest with you guys- I made a terrible decision last night to stay up until 6 AM to finish a book."

Haha! I've done that a time or two.

I second your recommendations of Uglies and The Selection. Both are really good, and The Selection's cover is delicious.

I just finished reading The 8th Confession, book 8 in the Women's Murder Club series. It wasn't bad, better than book 7, in my opinion. I don't care for the love triangle (more like a love square actually) going on in it, but the plot was pretty good.

Right now, I'm reading Hotel Pastis by Peter Mayle. It's about an advertising exec who decides to leave his life in London behind and transform an old police station into a hotel in Luberon, France. I'm not too far into it, but I love Mayle (The Good Year, which was made into a movie with Russell Crowe, is one of my favorites).

Donna (donnajdoak) | 27 comments Ok I moved a week and a half ago and am completely off track....Picking up Canary (YA) to get into something quickly...have the new John Irving and Daniel Pink books on my "to read next" list...and am in the first third of the Order of the Phoenix with my three kids, as well as Little House on the Prarie with my youngest daughter. Anyone read Canary?

message 11: by Gwendolyn (new)

Gwendolyn | 3 comments I am on page 261 of 318 in The Fault In Our Stars. I am so curious how it will end! Almost there though. Next I am thinking of reading either Sycamore Row or Allegiant. Unless my friend catches up to me in the Hunger Games trilogy in which case I will read Mocking jay. To be honest though I never know what I am going to read next because there are just too many books on my TBR list!

message 12: by Kyra (new)

Kyra Hay | 41 comments Katie,
Perfect! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to my to read list. I also have The Uglies on there so I'll have to pick those up soon too!

message 13: by Lanette (new)

Lanette (prvrbs31gal) I am about 1/4 of the way through "Raising Less Corn, More Hell" but it's not really a 'right before bed' kind of book, so I think I need to start something a little lighter tonight and save 'Corn' for tomorrow while we're hibernating.

message 14: by Vivian (new)

Vivian | 54 comments I'm almost finished with "Deadly Heat". Hopefully I will finish today since I didn't have to go to work. I think next will be "Sycamore Row" or a Elaine Viets book I have on hold at the library if that comes in.

I am sure all of us have made the same bad decision many times in our lives. Lol.

That is why I end up bringing home so many books from the library. I never know what I will be in the mood for.

message 17: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Hurst (bookrdr) | 285 comments I am behind on Allegient because I am spending all my time cooking yummy stuff during the storm. Cherry pie, meatloaf, hash brown casserole. Tonight is either homemade sloppy joes or tortilla soup. Also, I am WAY behind on my book on CD because I haven't been in my car at all due to the snowstorm. Ha ha.
After I finish Allegient, I am diving into the latest Odd Thomas book by Dean Koontz. I love that series.

message 18: by Julie (new)

Julie | 130 comments So, I finished Mockingjay. I actually liked it. Without giving any spoilers I did sort of figure out some of the twists before they happen, but I thought they worked. No character is all good or all bad, and I thought that added a nice depth to the story. On the whole even though I didn't want to like the series, I understand why it is so popular and I am glad I read it.

message 19: by Angela (new)

Angela Malerman (angelamal) | 41 comments Hi all, hope everyone is enjoying the snow days! I am starting Breath of Frost by Alexandra Harvey and am in the middle of Walking Dead / Fall of the Governor. On my way to the library today to drop of several and pick up more... any suggestions?

message 20: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Penn (jenniferpenn) | 41 comments Currently reading A Cup of Friendship, or at least trying because this past week I've been pretty busy and been able to sit and read :(

message 21: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessicakrall) I just finished The Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini...also reading The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews (left it at work during the storm last week and needed something else to read while stuck at home). I'm thinking of reading another Jennifer Weiner novel next, although I may just jump into the next Quilter book...a friend at work is loaning me as much of the set as she has. It has 20 books in it and I think she said she has ten of them.

message 22: by Vivian (new)

Vivian | 54 comments Just finished "Plum Spooky." It was a good, quick read. I will read more of the between the numbers books. Going to read "The Hobbit" for the Feb challenge. Haven't read it in years! Also will be reading "Board Stiff" by Elaine Viets once I pick up from VB library this week.

Ingrid Hurst (bookrdr) | 285 comments I took the advice of many of you and started Ready Player One today. Thanks!
