Okay Theresa, but it sucked as a thrilling read. I think of Thrillers as what Vince Flynn, Brad Thor and David Baldacci write.And starting Fatal Error, yes it seems to suit Mystery better.
Anne, I think it's going to work out best to leave it in Crime anyway.

Historical fiction and cultural
jmom, I can't distinguish Historical Fiction and Cultural - it is me. I just know that I like a period of Historical Fiction, some other periods i.e. earlier than 1800, eeeeewwwww.

So if I do finish, what do we need for card #2?
With the birthday girl reading mystery on card 2, we could do that diagonal thread. I could read either chick-lit, steam punk, or biography.
Janice, I can't do Chick Lit, so I'll volunteer for Biography. We'd just need someone else to read the 4th slot for that diagonal.
Has someone taken steampunk? Chick lit would be my last choice.
No, I just mentioned Chick Lit because I cannot read it. Actually, I could read Steam Punk if you would prefer Biography.
I'll take steampunk. That's my preference of the three. Phew! I was looking at chick lit lists and cringing. LOL!
I read The Rosie Project for Chick Lit, and that wasn't too bad. Most of that genre does make me cringe, too.
I've downloaded The Hunchback Assignments on audiobook from my library. It's a 7 hour read. Now, I need to get my nose buried into my crime novel and finish it tonight.

Esther, if you really want to read the book that would help most, I can log your finish as Crime and you could read Chick Lit. Today's Anne's birthday, and she chose a Mystery which also fits another challenge for her. Janice suggested we be sure to finish her string to celebrate. Janice will read Steampunk, and I've already read Chick Lit, so I'll read Biography.

Team Gold now has 6 strings finished on Card #1, and we'll have a 7th once Janice finishes Crime. If Joe does not finish Non-Fiction by then, we'll move Roz's Science/Nature book to Non-Fiction. As I see it, that will be the last string completed for Card #1, unless Mariab finishes Culture and Joe finishes Biography for the bottom row. If everyone reads Card #2 as planned (posted in Message #572), we'll have the center column and the center row. If someone will read Chick Lit, we'll have the Chick Lit to Biography diagonal. Can those signed up for slots on Card #2 confirm they'll be able to read those?
All the slots read and left in yellow will also earn points for the team, though I don't yet know how the scoring will go.

I read The Rosie Project for Chick Lit, which was just $1.99 on Kindle. It's short and kind of cute - very popular on another GR Group.
I'm headed to work, but still need to figure out what I'm going to read for Biography. I'm reading Lady Chatterley's Lover now for Romance, but everything I find that looks good for Biography falls in Jaxnsmom's definition of Memoir. I do have some great Biographies in my stash, but they're all too long for the time left. I'll get it sorted out tonight.
no kindle... and reading on my phone is no an option. my ipad is at home. I beleive I can read The Secret Life of Bees. Let's hope it's at the bookstore I will drive by later.I should be done with my biography as a backup for card#1. Unless i find a pocket of WiFi somewhere... I'll see you tomorrow!!!!! Ladies, we have SEVEN strings completed! I finished my crime novel last night.I'm confident that I can finish Steampunk for card #2. Woot! Woot!
Great, Janice! I'll do an update tonight. Esther will do Chick Lit and I found a couple of Biographies of Pope Francis that are not too long. That means we will probably finish 3 strings on Card #2. I have no idea how other teams are doing, but I think a total of 10 strings would be awesome!
Yay!!!! Everyone has done so well. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to finish another book for the challenge. I'm going to Aruba for a couple of weeks and I really need to start to pack. Early morning flight. But I will check in when I get there. Yay to free Wifi! I'm going to have to go through all the books read and I'll probably end up adding a bunch to my tbr. Just keeps getting fuller.
Ok.I have finished Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture.
Now, I ´m giving a try in Fantasy. First I wanted to read City of Bones, but I think is too long. Ideas anybody?

Mariab, City of Bones is almost 500 pages. If I were you I'd try something shorter. Stardust by Neil Gaiman is a quick read if you can get that. I read it yesterday for Fantasy on Card #2.
Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a very fast read. The hardcover is 181 pages, so it is just long enough to qualify. It's won some awards: Goodreads Choice for Fantasy (2013), Specsavers Book of the Year (2013), Paris Review Best of the Best (2013).

TEAM GOLD - WORKING ON CARD #2
What a great team we have! I have no idea how the other teams are doing, but I'm quite proud of what we've done together. Here's where we stand:Card #1:
We have finished 7 strings on Card #1 and still have a chance to finish 2 more, which would give us the 9 we had hoped for. Mariab has come back to us, finishing 2 books and now reading her Fantasy, which would finish the Center Column. Joe may still come in with Biography for the Bottom Row. If not, Esther may come back and finish the Biography she didn't need when the rules were updated.
Card #2:
We have 5 finishes posted and more to come. Casceil and I plan to finish SciFi and Romance tonight, giving us the Center Row. Anne is reading her Mystery for her birthday, and Esther, Janice, and I plan to have our books read for the Chick Lit to Biography Diagonal before the Toppler closes at Noon EST tomorrow. I believe Sam and Kat are reading Paranormal and Contemporary, which would give us the Center Column. In all, that's 3 strings for Card #2.
If all goes as planned, it looks like we may finish with 12 strings completed and 9 orphans read for extra points.
I can't read biography on Card 1, because I read Suspense/thriller. If anyone out there can read Short stories, I believe we can finish ten down by attributing Janice's mystery and Roz's humor to ten. (They are currently attributed to 12 and 6, neither of which will be finished unless Joe turns up and has read bio.)
Casceil, I'm sorry I got my players mixed up! It was Esther in Message #580 who said she could finish Biography for Card #1.As for 10 down, I'm the only one who read Short Stories, and mine is part of the Diagonal string, so 10 down cannot be finished.
Theresa, I thought Sam's mystery read was the one in the diagonal string? That is how it's marked on the chart.
