Trixie | 93 comments This was a library book I read two or possibly three years ago--no more than five years ago.

I believe it was the author's first book, but not necessarily. I also believe there was going to be a sequel, which I'd like to read.

The princess is in a fictional Middle-Eastern country, in about the year 1300 or so (could have been anytime between 500 BCE and 1500 CE). She comes of marriageable age (13,14,15, something like that) and is given a genie for her birthday. This isn't unheard of, I believe it's a rather commonplace gift for this occasion, but it is always open to controversy and unpredictability because who knows if the bottle will actually contain a genie or not, and if so, what the genie will be like?

The genie is male and is her slave. He has all the usual powers and he does everything she wants him to do, including whisk her away to faraway places--the desert or under the ocean--and even back in time to visit his life when he was a mortal.

At some point there is a parade of marriageable suitors flocking to her Middle-Eastern country to vie for the girl's hand in marriage. But she is becoming closer emotionally to her genie and I think she asks him at the end of the book to turn her into a genie, or to release himself from genie-dom and become mortal with her.

The sequel may have already been published at that point. I'm sure it was a continuing story. But I don't remember the title, author, or what the cover looked like. I'm pretty sure it was a female author, who may have had a middle-Eastern name. It was in the regular adult-fiction section at my library, although the heroine is so young. The title also is fairly simple, like the heroine's name or maybe "The Princess' Genie" or something very straightforward like that, which makes it all the more frustrating that I can't find it. Every search I've done on Amazon turns up the Aladdin movie or book, and that's NOT IT. :-)
