Just read Ender's Game - how I haven't read it earlier, I don't know. Loved it. Like all the talk on strategy. I can understand how it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I like books that are about ideas as much as the plot line.

I read Ender's Game and thought it was ok. I liked the strategy stuff, but I didn't care for a lot of the characters. And if I don't like the characters, I'm probably not going to like the book. Glad you enjoyed it though!

I finally The Color of Magic last week, yay! I'm glad I stuck with it as I ended up really liking it. Now to finish City of Lost Souls this week. I had put it aside for a bit and it was kind of hard to get back into it & remember exactly what was happening, but I am back in the groove with it now.

Last book I read was Say Cheese and Die-Again! surprisingly it took me a while to get through due to school and other books. I'd only read a lil at a time then forget about it and then finally remembered to pick it back up last night.

Last I read was Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover and was really impressed by it. It's like a testosterone injection to the eyeball at times but it's a really original premise. Strong male and female characters and a lot of fun. Highly recommend it and will definitely be continuing on with the series.

I love Ender's Game, but man I can't stand Orson Scott Card; I like Terry Pratchett as an author but I can never get more than 5 pages into his books without having to give up, wish I liked Pratchett instead of Card, I like to support people that have personalities that I appreciate. (I feel similar about Mark Lawrence, great guy to chat with on here and reddit, but his first book was just a little to gritty for me though I do intend to try the second one soon)

I do enjoy that, but there are times I just find myself not caring one way or the other. That is when I struggle.
If I like or really like or totally despise characters, I want to see where the story goes. But if I find I just don't care, then I have a very hard time going on with the book. That is how I felt with Ender's Game. The premise was good, but I couldn't summon up anything beyond apathy towards the majority of the characters.

I read that book a year or so ago in order to meet a reading challenge requirement for one of my groups. I had never heard of it and had zero expectations going in. I ended up thoroughly enjoying it.

This actually looks really interesting and something I'd not heard of before. Are there other books you would say its similar to?

I've just finished reading Touchstone and really enjoyed it. I've not read any of Melanie Rawn's other books so that might be why as a lot of other reviewers said it didn't compare to them. Anyone read any of the others?

Hmm. I struggled reading the first of (Abercrombie's) books, but I'm intrigued by the blurb so I'm going to give it a a go and see :)

Just finished Daniel Polansky's Low Town which was my first boon by him and I was impressed. It was a bit of a fantasy murder mystery taking place almost completely in the slums. It was a setting I loved (love rogue characters so it just fit) and it was done In the first person very well. I have read a couple other first person fantasy novels and I think this one takes the cake (Douglas Hulick's Among Thieves was great as well)

Highly recommended it to anyone who likes this sort of setting!

I just finished The Clone Wars and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I picked it up because of the challenge but it was turned out to be a decent read. I have seen the show and it follows the episode pretty closely but it really explores Anakin's feelings and his camaraderie between him and the storm troopers.

I just finished Carmilla. It was good. A fairly entertaining story, plus very interesting on a meta level, since it was almost certainly an inspiration for Dracula.

Andreas, I have had Thousand Names series on my radar for a while. If you have read Brian McClellan's Powder Mage series is it similar to that? I have read the first of that series and really enjoyed it and plan to continue on with it so it would move Wexler's series up the to read pile if it is as good.

Yes, I also read Promise of Blood and The Crimson Campaign - here is my review. It is very interesting to compare those two series, as they are similar and different at the same time.

Both series are flintlock fantasy - I'd say that Wexler's series is a GRRM approach whereas McClellan is more in Sanderson's tradition, i.e. historic vs. magic fantasy.

Both are page turners, nothing literary here. Wexler's novel has very often a bird's eye of view, tending to larger battles, whereas McClellan focuses on individuals and has an embedded detective story.

If you like McClellan's you will probably like Wexler's series as well.
Does that make sense to you?

I just finished Steelheart and have yet to do my review but I really enjoyed it. I would have to say that it is probably 4.5 out of 5 stars for me. :)

I've just finished Bloodrush by Ben Galley. It's one of the 10 finalists out of 273 self-published fantasy books in a contest I set up (google SPFBO). A good read once I let myself swallow the magic system.

Now I've started The Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts who I know from her collaboration with 'Raymondy' Feist on the excellent Empire trilogy. It's a fat book, so I'll be a while!

Agreed Paul, a very good first two books and the closer should be a doozy. My first book will likely be Horns by Joe Hill. Not something I would normally read but my wife got it for my for Xmas and wants me to read it so that we can watch the movie. I've seen others in the group read his stuff so it should be OK.

Have re-read the first two Bridget Jones books since I've been back at my parents. Love them, I've read them so many times and I just felt like some quick re-reads over Christmas :D
