Haha, I have that with LotR (try to re-read it once a year) and A Song of Ice and Fire at the mo. And Divergent, which I've been meaning to re-read since we chose it for BotM.

The last book I read was A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It was absolutely fantastic. A first-person narrated memoir of the highest quality. There were times it seemed as if I wasn't reading just a fantastic piece of fiction but reading the real-life adventures of the person in question. Descriptive without devolving into purple prose it was a refreshing break from more recent authors; I will be reading the the rest of the Barsoom series forthwith.

I just read first two books (only ones released at this time) of Brian Staveley's Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne. The first was The Emperors Blades, and the second was Providence of Fire. I read them because they were recommended to me by people who's opinions I greatly respect and I was not disappointed.

Both books were excellent and the ending of the second book was a Doozie. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys gritty epic fantasy with lots of political intrigue with highly trained teams of assassin warriors riding giant death birds into hugh pressure situations, human sacrifices to God's of pain, explosions, millenniums old immortal antagonists, and just good old fashioned awesomeness.

Jospeh, I really enjoye that as well. We did it aa a group read a while back and I thought it was a really good adventure. I bought a few more of the series and I'll dip back in soon enough.

Lancer I'm delighted you've enjoyed Brian Staveley's books as much as I did. And that ending is so good. I had half an idea of what was coming because of a twitter chat I had with Brian but it still amazed me. I'm hoping to get an early copy of book 3 like I did the rest of the series as its been one of the best new writers I've read in a while. We'll have to spread the word.

Joseph princess of Mars was one of the books of the month not so long ago, might be interesting for you to look at that thread.
from what I can remember it had mixed reviews some liked it others found it very dated.
I know I wasn't very impressed to be honest

I just read and absolutely loved it! It was funny, it was serious, it was just overall great! I had hung onto it for a while, carried it around and read other things instead because I was a little worried I'd hate it. Now I wish I had read it sooner. Definitely a keeper!

I finished Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West yesterday. Overall I felt that it was a pretty overrated book. It was a decent read but I don't understand why it's on every list of must read books.

Yeah, that was kind of a waste of time. The musical is a lot of fun, but the stories are actually very different.

I didn't actually start with dragonflight though I read DragonSong first, I just loved Menolly and her fire lizards, then with the addition of dragons I was hooked.

I really liked the Pern novels as well. I recently read:

Books 3-5 of the Mageborn series by Michael G. Manning. I read the first two as soon as they were released. (Amazon recommended as a new and upcoming author) I then forgot about this series until about a month ago when I found that he finished the series, and created more stories in the same universe. They new books are good, and his writing style has developed nicely.

I also read the Dragon Stone Trilogy by Kristian Alva. I got this for free from the kindle's owners lending library. It wasn't bad. It started off similar to Eragon by Christopher Paolini, but then branched off into it's own story. The ending to the trilogy was kind of anti-climactic, but it was still a decent read. Especially when it was free.

Last book I read was do androids dream of electric sheep which was long overdue and I loved it. Different enough from the movie to keep it interesting.

No that's actually my first. I have read far less sci fi than fantasy so I'm trying to get some of the classics in. I recently bought Dune, and Neuromancer and will be reading them soon. I'm likely going to read Dune once I finish with Ruin.

So, just downloaded Red Rising on my kindle after hearing nothing but good things on here, and I'm glad I did. I normally don't like science fiction, and tend to stick more towards fantasy, but this book was great. Unfortunately, I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day...and will most likely finish the trilogy before we even start the Golden Son BotM. Thanks guys :D

Another random thought: has anyone else read the Apprentice Adept series by Piers Anthony? Like Red Rising, the people there have different colors, and each color relates to a specific kind of job. Well, in Apprentice Adept, it's a specific type of magic. But it stuck me as similar when I started reading these books.

I just finished Sorceror to the Crow , a recent debut by Zen Cho. Very similar to Jonathan Strange. Quite good but quite slow in parts.
Next up I'm going to read a gothic horror , The Taxidermists Daughter by Kate Mosse before jumping head first into a glut of scifi for Scifi month.
