SOLVED. Science fiction featuring an alien called a hob [s]

About 16 years ago I read this novel set in the north of England, featuring a small sheep like creature called a hob which turns out to be an alien stranded on earth. It's crew mates are dormant. The authors first name was I believe elizabeth. Any help would be appreciated.
