The Undead Pool (The Hollows #12) by Kim Harrison - Start Date February 25th

oh I am green with envy!

********* Spoilers Chapters 1-2
Rachel golfing, that there is just calling for some disaster, even if she isn't really golfing, but bodyguarding. I did like how Kevin tried to defend Trent against the blowhard. Trent was being sort of secretive, it has me wondering if he has plans to ruin the guy financially or socially. Also, just the thought of Trent teaching Rachel to golf has me laughing.
I'm concerned with all the "wild" magic going on. That things happened when Rachel couldn't defend herself, well...not good. But the stunner from the bridge (view spoiler)

I'm glad to see that it is most likely that (view spoiler)
The whole Free Vampire thing seems odd to me. The masters are supposed to be so powerful that you would think that they would have crushed them long before now.
I still hate Elesbeth. What a harpy she was when she came to the church, so far out of line. I almost hope she is behind some of the crap going on, mostly because she needs to go away and now. I thought she had balls asking Rachel about her relationship with Trent and then warning her away.
I find myself intrigued by the goddess and how she is going to play in with the wild magic.
I feel sorry for Ivy, I don't think there is any way that Nina can come out of things sane, Felix will mess things up so that she will be crazy or really dead.

Since Rachel became part of the pack, I feel like that has been under utilized in the books. So I'm glad that David and the pack are around. I like the relationship that Rachel has with David, but wish that there was more with the pack. I find it funny that the pack seems to put Rachel on a pedestal, especially when so many of them haven't met her. I like that the Pack and David came to help Rachel. I even like that Rachel realizes that she isn't doing her duty in the pack, but it was still sad when she and David really realized that things needed to change. Had the pack itself, only stayed the two of them, things would have been fine.
The goddess and the mystics is weird, even more so when Rachel was taken over by them. I can't believe that the free vampires are trusting Landon even a little bit. You can tell he is slimy and out for himself only.
It was interesting how Landon kept telling Trent he had to marry Elesbeth, manipulating him to stay away from Rachel, knowing he was stronger with her. I hope that changes and Trent is allowed to do what he wants.
I feel sorry for Eden, he is so overwhelmed and there is no back up, yet as a public servant he feels the need to do something.

I find it interesting how much Newt seemed to know about the wild magic and the goddess. It makes me think that she plays at crazy to keep all the others in line.
I found myself with a huge smile, (view spoiler)

Warning, Spoliers Ahead...
"How does the man make checkered shirts and pastels look good?" - It's Trent - he can make anything look good.
"When you going to put us all out of our misery and boink him?" - Yes, Rachel, when are you going to put us out of our misery? I've been impatiently waiting since Dead Witch Walking!
Rachel should have let Jenks pix Limbcus - what a jerk!
Has anyone kept a tally of all the places Rachel has been banned from? By this point in the series, it has to be quite a list.
Jonathan's back in human form. I think witnessing Trent and Rachel becoming close will be worse for him than being transformed into a dog.
"...Ellasbeth when she came to pick up or drop off the girls and Trent didn't want her on the grounds..." - If Trent isn't allowing Ellsabeth to be at his house - even for pickups and drop-offs I think it's safe to say he isn't interested in pursuing a reconciliation.
Misfired charms are very rapidly becoming extremely dangerous. It was plain luck that the one that caught Rachel on the road didn't cause a high body count due to car accidents.
"He'd looked like Kisten." - I really hope we don't see a return of Kisten. I'm firmly Trent-Rachel and I don't want any diversions at this point. I always felt Rachel let Kisten off way too easily for the boat incident. The explosion had a body count of over 200 and "I'm sorry, I didn't think he'd allow the bomb to go off" isn't a justifiable excuse. That doesn't even factor in all the times Rachel jumped on Trent for killing - and he has a much smaller body count than Kisten.
"There's only one possible relationship, that of slave and master, and you are failing!"
"God, Al! It was five thousand years ago!"
"It was yesterday." - Demons sure know how to hold a grudge.
Love crazy Newt - "Thunder like elephants"? - Yep, that's helpful.
Love Ivy being put out that no one recognized her. She probably feels she losing her badass credibility.
Ivy and Edden's remarks confirm that something's rotten in the state of Demark aka Interland Security.
"I need to know. I want to know what a date with you is like so I can look at it and say that was a date." - This statement along with Trent's earlier one about "this incredible freedom" was touching and shows how restricted his life has been.
Loved the bowling date and the aftermath in the bar.
Are the werewolves being affected by the misfires too? The vamps have obviously lost it.

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...
Are the Free Vampires causing the misfires? I'm all about reforming the Vampire society - I find the master vampires to be very creepy but I don't think it's okay for some of the newbie vamps to be running around without any restrictions.
Love David - he is always awesome. I really wish we could have seen the pack dinner - it sounds hilarious.
These misfires are nasty - being skinned, losing your intestines? Eww!
Kisten a saint? I think he would laugh his butt off at the idea.
"I'm sorry, Ellasbeth, is there a reason for you to walk into my house and scream at me, or is this some kind of elven tradition I'm unaware of?" - Rachel was nicer about the intrusion that I would have been.
"If you wake up my girlfriend, I'll let her eat you." - Ivy for the win!
"He won't take my calls." - Yep, Trent's definitely not looking to reconcile.

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

You called out some great quotes in these chapters.
I thought it was odd that Kisten was sainted. Although I think he would have loved it and played it up, given the chance.

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...
Jenks's situation with Ray & Lucy made me laugh. It's hard to wrangle toddlers when you're only the size of their hand.
Rachel has access to wild magic?
"There was a book in the little girl's hand, and she'd been crying. Ray just looked mad." - Ellasbeth's a natural at motherhood.
"I did promise the Goddess two goats I've never delivered on."
"Sa'han. Cincinnati is not plagued with misfires because you haven's sacrificed two goats." - You never know with gods - they can be very exacting about promises.
"I have Nicholas Gregory Sparagmos about somewhere. I put him somewhere safe. I can't remember exactly, but if I put my mind to it, I'm sure I can find him." - Newt always makes me laugh and what, exactly, would be her definition of safe?
I laughed at Newt curbstomping both Al & Trent.
"He doesn't know the only way to enslave her is with sex?" - Is Newt telling the truth? How will it affect the familiar bond of Rachel and Trent?
Newt's chat with Rachel - a good candidate for the most awkward, contradictory, and hilarious birds and the bees chat ever.
What does it mean that Newt is sensitized to magic too? Does she have her own elf stashed somewhere?
Rachel's determination to avenge her pack was awesome. I'm glad David's okay though.

In which book did Kisten die? I've got to make sure to read that one, though I'll probably read them all since I love them already.
In which book did Rachel become a demon? I must read this story. I didn't see that one coming.

This wild magic theory is interesting. Why is it tied to Rachel's line and who is doing it? Is it just attracted to Rachel because she created the line or is she perhaps a target?
I liked how Trent stood by Rachel when she got in trouble for protecting him at the golf course. I definitely look forward to seeing the transformation between him being someone Rachel intensely disliked in the first book to crushing on him majorly in this one.
Sara, I totally laughed at the pants comment. Images of the Norwegian curlers from the Olympics came to mind:

The enslaving with sex comment and how “An elf who doesn’t believe in his magic can be bested. One who believes will always survive. That’s why Al is upset that wild magic is being pulled from your ley line. Coupled with belief, it’s stronger than demon magic, though none would admit it.” worry me. Could this mean elves are behind what's going on? Are there really free vamps or is it a ruse?
What is up with the Kisten look alike? It seems like something to distract Rachel perhaps from Trent? Could this be more proof of elf involvement?
What was going on with that orgy? How did it come to be? Again it appears to be a link to Rachel. Someone seems to really be messing with her or perhaps this is more evidence she is a target.
What's up with Felix? Why is he the only master not to sleep? That comment, about him being awake because he's always hungry? Could it be some area of his brain is affected by his insanity and can't be touched by the magic?
The saint Kisten is funny, but if he is back could he be trying to locate Rachel? I'm not sure of how he died or the circumstances, but this is something I find curious.
Both the elves and demons don't want Rachel and Trent to get together. Since Rachel isn't your typical demon, could she potentially have kids with him? I really need to read the books in between the series.
Sara, now you've got me wondering if the goats are an issue. Could we have 2 or more things taking place at once?
Newt being sensitive to wild magic makes me wonder about her background. Could she be more like Rachel? Have her origins been revealed?
Going back to reading.

Kisten dies in book five. Rachel's always been part demon she just didn't know it. Ray is Quinn's DTR but the girls are treated as sisters. There's a elf politics reason but I can't remember what it is.

"So how exactly are Lucy and Ray sisters?"
More in an adopted/extended sense of the word. Lucy's biological parents are Trent and Ellasbeth. Ray's biological parents are Quen and Ceri (who died in the previous book). Quen helped raise Trent and became involved with Ceri around the same time that Trent and Ellsabeth broke up. Ceri and Trent were pretending to be a couple in public when Trent found out about Lucy. Trent quickly claimed custody of Lucy and brought her home. Trent, Quen, and Ceri raised the girls as a "one mother, two fathers" situation. The public believes Trent is the father of both girls.
Kisten is killed in the fifth book (For A Few Demons More) and Rachel is confirmed as a demon in the sixth book (The Outlaw Demon Wails) but there were hints from the first book.
"This wild magic theory is interesting. Why is it tied to Rachel's line and who is doing it? Is it just attracted to Rachel because she created the line or is she perhaps a target?"
I am very curious about who is behind this? Felix, Free Vampires, a demon, a bored elf goddess?
Those pants! I would refuse to appear in public!
I agree with your points - there is a lot going on.
If you have any more questions or would like to do buddy reads of the books, let me know - the Hollows is one of my all-time favorite series.

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...
"Diplomacy, you are my middle name." - Rachel has matured throughout the series. In the first few books, she loudly proclaimed her suspicions no matter the consequences much to Edden and Glen's frustration.
"It was what I was, and it bothered me that I hadn't had the chance to show him how nasty I could be before he wrote me off." - Rachel might have a bit of youthful immaturity in her but I understand the sentiment behind it.
"Shunning the hot dog on the principle that Jonathan had made it..." - The Rachel - Jonathan feud is the most amusing one in the series.
Wine with hot dogs? Eww!
Kim Harrison is really trying to soften/humanize Ellasbeth in these chapters but I'm not buying it.
I don't trust Landon. I have a feeling this trip into the ever-after isn't going to end well.
"He's already lost half the support of half the enclave because of you." - I think one of the main points of this book will be Trent deciding his future - pursuing his own happiness (Rachel) or being shackled to his fate (Ellasbeth, the elves).

Chapter 1-15
Ok so can I share I have always loved how Trent is fascinated with Rachel's hair so it is nice to see that has not changed.
I did not care for the Kisten look alike that was just bothersome for me as a the reader.
I liked the gold course scene especially because for a minute there who could tell if it was Rachel or Trent or what.
Newt is still awesome even if she is batshit crazy - funny how one minute she is like don't sleep with Trent because he could enslave you but on the next she is like if you do it will be awesome. Poor Rachel.
As for the actual plot - free vampires?? Not sure what they would gain by getting rid of the vampires something is not clicking for me. Then how does wild magic figure into this?
Elves vs Demons wonder if Rachel and Trent's attraction to each other can defeat all of the prejudice?
Oh and loved the bowling date

I would highly suggest you wait and read them in order I think it is worth it...the wait I mean

Wine with hot dogs? Eww!
Kim Harrison is really trying to soften/humanize Ellasbeth in these chapters but I'm not buying it."
I loved that she was like man it looks good but I thought it was a good call I would not eat it either!
Yeah I agree Ellasbeth is up to something. I just don't care for her why can't she go away??

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...
Newt to the rescue!
"Hot dogs and milkshakes, baby! Gives you energy for more important stuff!" - I'm with Jenks!
"...you're perfect for each other! You irritate people, and he smooths things out. You have good mojo, and he only thinks he does. You're broke and he's rich. You've got those weird feet of yours, and he's got them cute ears!" - The stuff true love is made of! Seriously, Rachel, listen to Jenks!!
I think Landon is the one who caused Brancroft's meltdown.
I love that not even Trent can take a good picture for a driver's license. It's a skill no one has mastered.
"You must make amends for what your mother refused to do!" - The circumstances surrounding the death of Trent's mother have always been mysterious. Is Bancroft implying that Trent's mother died because she refused to kill Rachel?
Landon better hope he was able to make a quick exit from the church. I wouldn't want to be left with an angry Ivy & Jenks!

I would highly suggest you wait and read them in order I think it is worth it...the wait I mean"
Too late. I do this all the time.

Warning, Spoilers Ahead.
"I'm running with the pack." - Loved David and Edden's rescue of Rachel.
Trent and Rachel are finally together! I've shipped the couple since the first book. I'm so excited. I could easily quote their entire conversation but I'll settle for a happy dance of joy!

Warning, Spoilers Ahead.

I was happy with them too!

Me, too. I keep re-reading (view spoiler) Le sigh.

Here are my thoughts and I hope I do not have to many spoilers
I missed the everafter and I am bumed about how things ended with Al. It felt like he abandoned her and it made me a bit angry... I kept wanting Rachel to call him on his feelings with Ceri. It also annoyed me because I felt like after the battle with Ku'Sox Trent and Al had made a tentative peace.
The Elfen religion stuff was interesting but in a way I felt like there were pieces of the wild magic, mystics and the goddess that I did not understand. It was good to see Newt though.
I loved the scene at the zoo it is the perfect ending I think.
It is also good to see Ivy finding her purpose but it did both me when she said Rachel was the long chase or something like that.

I was surprised at Quinn now that Ceri is gone I would have thought he would want Trent to be happy...especially after living with Ellasbeth did anyone else find his behavior odd?

I thought that too, but then I thought maybe he was looking towards the best interest of Rae, not Trent.

That is an interesting way of seeing things...that thought had not occurred to me. I was thinking perhaps he would be out of a job or he would loose his status. Still though I thought he liked Rachel more but I guess maybe that has nothing to do with it.

I hate to say it, but hate between races, or in this case species, can run deep. Plus, the two species are enemies. A sad fact. I think that is what we're sort of seeing. A good example, in this particular instance, would probably be a Jewish person bringing home a Nazi descendant to meet mom and dad shortly after the war has ended. The Nazi crimes were horrific and some people can't separate the crimes of individuals from the group. Not even the descendants who didn't participate.

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...
I read at work so I didn't take notes like I usually do.
I liked the increased presence of David and the pack.
Newt continues to be awesome. I love that the Goddess is terrified of her, that she continues to take a maternal role towards Rachel, and that Trent is giving her horse riding lessons.
Who knew Jonathan could be a badass? I'm used to seeing him as a snarky weasel.
Will Ellasbeth catch a clue? How often do you have to be rejected for it to stick. As for the concerned mother card - anyone who had read Million Dollar Baby knows what a load of crap that is!
As for Quen - I think it's worry about Trent. He did help raise the man and the book showed the consequences of pursuing a relationship with Rachel. If Quen was in Westeros he would be a Tully: "Family, Duty, Honor". In Quen's point of view, Trent leaving Ellasbeth for Rachel is in violation of all three.
Newt is awesome!! Al needs to get over himself.
The plot wasn't one of my favorites - maybe I'm a bit spoiled after the last three books in the series? However, Rachel and Trent became a couple so all is right in the world!
I'm going on record that the final book will reveal Rachel is pregnant. The whole book emphasized that the races can only be united with a successful breeding couple and Trent can only have a voice in the enclave if he is involved with a fertile woman. Also, female demons gather souls inside themselves while they are pregnant. The last book deals with Ivy's soul. You can kill three birds with one stone.

That would be awesome.

I totally agree!!

I liked the increased presence of David and the pack.
Me too I have always liked David and I like how Rachel handled the situation
Who knew Jonathan could be a badass? I'm used to seeing him as a snarky weasel...."
Right!
That goes along with Darcy's theory. I guess I thought he would still be dealing with the loss of Ceri and so Trent's happiness would be most important. It just struck me as odd.

Newt is an interesting character and it would appear she had the same bonding experience that Rachel did but she went insane while the Goddess evolved. So this makes me question what exactly the Goddess was or truly is? Did she evolve into a Goddess or was she already one? The other people who the Goddess tried to merge with who weren't dead were all elves, right? Could something about the demons be different that lets them survive or does the difference lie with the Goddess herself?
I like Trent and Rachel together. Sue, I also loved the lines he used. Definitely sigh worthy stuff.
Sara said, "I'm going on record that the final book will reveal Rachel is pregnant. Also, female demons gather souls inside themselves while they are pregnant. The last book deals with Ivy's soul. You can kill three birds with one stone."
I wondered the same thing about Trent and Rachel. Could both of them have been experimented on by their parents? Trent was at the came too... You some will not be happy if the two have a child. Many readers feel too much emphasis is put on characters having children. They feel the having children should not define a person. It will be interesting to see what Harrison will do.
Also, do we truly know what the mystics are? They kept saying they were the Goddess' thoughts, but they seemed almost to be souls that couldn't think for themselves (kind of like a hive mind) until they were freed. Could the Goddess collect souls? Could they be the souls of all the people who she attempted to bind to/possess?
As for Ivy's soul, that's an interesting thought. That hadn't occurred to me. Hmmm..
Sara said, Hot dogs and milkshakes, baby! Gives you energy for more important stuff!" - I'm with Jenks!
Can I just say I love Jenks? He's my favorite guy of the series. Trent comes in second. Did they resolve his age issue? In book four it sounded like he was close to dying. That would be sad.
So we still have the Nina issue to resolve. I don't think the free vamps have been stopped. Rachel and Trent are still black balled and have financial problems. Is Ceri truly dead, because something I read made me think she was kidnapped and didn't die.
Al is being Al by being mad at Rachel. He tends to throw fits when he doesn't get his way.
I don't think we've seen the last of Ellasbeth.
I still think we're missing something significant about Rachel and Trent knocking boots. Everyone acted so dramatically about it (even Newt) in the demon realm.
Why did David seem so down trodden about Rachel stepping down as Alpha? He seemed overly disappointed.

Ellasbeth will definitely be back - she's right up there with Nick when it comes to being the proverbial bad penny.
As for David...they really develop a bond after he receives the focus - and they are the duo who formed the pack...it's probably the same sense of sadness you feel when someone's moving away. You still keep in touch but it's not the same.
Another thought I had while driving to work...they mysterious death of Trent's mom - were still getting hints about the circumstances but not a clear picture. The same with Trent's siblings. I swear that in an earlier book Trent implied that his siblings died due to the elves' genetic damage but he states in this book that the only reason he survived his siblings' deaths is because of Jonathan. That sounds like they died from an attack and not an illness.
I feel like I need to do a re-read and quote everything that pertains to the deaths of Rachel's father and Trent's family. I might get a clearer picture.

The thing with Trent's mom threw me as well because I think in like 7 or 8 we find out that Trent's mom was with Rachel's dad when she dies but I am not sure we know more than that.
I really liked David and I am sad yet happy to see him fading off into the background. Do you remember how he was turning the women through sex and had no idea. I was like wow David way to get it on.
I think I may reread the series before the final book comes out.

David's turning of women via sex was funny. Imagine that awkward conversation with the women. Worse STD ever? On the other hand, it's probably the only one that has an upside.
I've talked myself into a re-read. Maybe we should create a recap thread and post the relevant quotes for items we know are going to be covered in the final book: the mysterious deaths, vampires & their souls, elves & demons, etc. It would be interesting to see how much foreshadowing Kim Harrison has done.

Synopsis:
Witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has managed to save the demonic ever after from shrinking, but at a high cost. Now strange magic is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong, and the truce between the races, between Inderlander and human, is shattering.
Rachel must stop the occurrences before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and it becomes all-out supernatural war. However, the only way to do so is through the ancient elven wild magic, which carries its own perils.
