I would use the name on the cover. That is the name that someone will use to add a book so if we don't use it someone else will add it anyway. You can then add links on each author page to the other variants of the name.
Ref “How To Cook And Eat In Chinese” by Buwei Yang Chao
The book in my hand is a 1956 edition of “How To Cook And Eat In Chinese” “First published in mcmlvi by Faber & Faber Limited”. GR currently has a record for this book title, author Yang Chao Buwei
Worldcat records three arrangements of the author’s name: “Buwei Yang Chao”, “Yang Chao Buwei, and “Pu-wei Yang Chao” against this title.
The Library of Congress likewise recognises different arrangements of the author’s name, see: http://authorities.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pw...
Question: Do I create an edition record per the book in my hand (by Buwei Yang Chao), first British edition, or do I enter the author’s name as Yang Chao Buwei and add a Librarian’s Note to explain these are one and the same author, just different usages of the name?
A wider decision also needs to be made: how does Goodreads want to group the different books/editions written by Buwei Yang Chao / Yang Chao Buwei / Pu-wei Yang Chao?
(note: I haven’t actually looked at this time to see if Pu-wei Yang Chao is on GR).
Please advise. If GR’s ‘market’ in China grows; this type of question will doubtless appear more frequently.
With thanks
