Looking for Alaska by John Green - Restarting August 12th 2019

(view spoiler)[Okay, so I'm a terrible person. I kind of guessed what would happen to Alaska when Miles said 'We did not say: Don't drive. You're drunk'. And I feel horrible for saying how much I disliked (well straight up hated) Alaska.

It was tragic for her friends when the school announced that she had died, especially after we got a bit of insight into her life after she talked about her mother dying.

For a book I wasn't enjoying, it certainly had me hooked after all that happened in the chapters between my last update! (hide spoiler)]

Finished

(view spoiler)[Well, for the first 1/3 or so, I really considered DNFing and if I finished it, it would definitely be a 1 star. And then the story got better, and I was emotionally invested in it. It just took me a little while to get into it. I think we just needed to get to know the other characters a bit more, and that definitely helped.

Overall, it was a high 3 stars for me! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ What is this before anyway? I don't know if I missed it or if it is supposed to be a mystery. I wonder what Alaska is so upset about, I miss them hanging out all the time. I like how this book is paced where we skip a bunch of days when nothing important happened, it makes it so its not boring (hide spoiler)]

This is the first time I've read any of his books, it definitely feels like a totally different writing style than anything I've read before. I have a hard time with kids in high school too, I usually prefer my characters a little older!

So this book reminds me of several rather good YA authors who write teens pretty well, but for most of their books if you ask me what it's about, I'll say well... I'm not really sure. I like that Miles (view spoiler)[ took a chance on boarding school and I guess he's at a rigorous school but other than that, he's pretty much fallen in with kids getting him to do things he probably shouldn't do and doesn't really want to do, or getting him in trouble by association. The drowning "prank" was incredibly serious and it bothers me quite a lot that the school mantra is "don't rat" in a case like that. It's okay, but a little like Hemingway for teens. (hide spoiler)]
