ABANDONED. Children book about a murdered hero

It was a black book with a lot of figures.

The story was like this: There's this poor guy that wants to marry the princess. He asks her hand to the King and both King and princess think that's an awful idea and send him in a quest, so if he survives he'll marry. He has to kill a monster - I think it was a hydra - and come back alive. He dies and get slashed into pieces and thrown in a certain river. His mom grabs every piece of him and glue him back together.
And I don't remember the ending. Or the name of the book or tale, whatever.

Please, help me. I'm looking for this book for some years already :/

It sounds like a lot of fairy tales. There are a lot of them--some in Grimm's, I think-- where the hero gets cut to pieces and then is put back together.

Was this story by itself, part of a larger collection, or a full-length novel?

I was asking the same question in other places and at least now I know it's about the legend of Lemminkäinen.

As I remember, it was a full-length novel.
