P.s Can we just talk about the cover for a minute? I was really impressed by how beautiful it was, ahhhhhhh

I totally understand the cat thing! lol I just imagine Cy going to him and the guy sitting in a big leather chair stroking a cat and say "so you come to me for help"
I agree it was not nice to leave us like that!

Thank God I'm not alone imagining villains that way! lol

- I like how fast pace the book goes.
- I like how the plot flows from the first few chapters onwards.
- I like how question marks start popping up in my head when tragedy occurs.
- I like how new characters are being introduced in Carus.
- I like how infatuation develops from hostility. (ahh reminds me of my teenage years)
- I partially do not like how it ends. Hahaha!!!
And now, I will be waiting for book 2 to see what Cy has become. Colder? Warmer? or The Same.

I think I found it more than a little frustrating that the pacing problems exhibited at the novel's opening never really improved, because it made reading the book an uneven experience.
I was pretty underwhelmed in the villains and the most of the characters overall, as they seemed to just sit in their initial archetypes and not develop too particularly far out from said archetypes. Also, the villains just blended together, save for Micah and SunAj. The latter of which only because I noticed his name is the word "Janus" spelled backwards -- Janus, being the two-faced Roman god of beginnings and transitions -- and so I had/have more than a few expectations for his character just based on his name.
I wish I hadn't known this was going to be a series before finishing it because then I feel I could have been more invested in the ending, though I did see it coming before it happened. Oddly enough, I feel the denouement could have been much more powerful had 'Control' been a standalone novel as opposed to the first in a series. It does, however, mean that I expect some series world-building from Ms. Kang in the sequel to make up for this book's serious lack of it :P
Despite all my griping, I did ultimately kinda like this book. I didn't love it, per say, and was very disappointed with the majority of it, but it still managed to keep me reading and invested in at least a few of its characters -- Hex and Vera spinoff, please? -- so that I am curious to see what occurs in the sequel :)

oooh, i totes agree with the last paragraph. also, i agree with you- it would been better if this was a standalone. -- i agree with your whole pov btw. lol

me too. i really loved Vera. and yep, third person would have been cooler- as it would have given us more insight and kept us more intrigued (more than it already did). if you know what i mean?! or whatever. gah

But it kind of bothered me that they totally skipped over the fact that Wilbert totally betrayed them! And they just seem so okay with this. He's only mentioned in passing after this revelation and there's not really any bitterness or anything. I would like to know more about why he did it. I get the feeling Wilbert really did like everyone at Carus, but Aureus was more important to him. And Zelia's dad brought Wilbert to Carus. Did he plant him there on purpose? I need to know!
And what about Marka and Zelia's dad? They were in love? There is so so much that needs to be explained but I am hoping that it will be explained in the sequel(s). Overall, I'd give it 4 stars.
And I need Cy back. That it all.

A few of the characters also fell a little bit flat for me. It just felt like their personality traits were kind of been there - done that. Not super unique from other characters I've read. HOWEVER, I did like all their science-y talk. Made me feel smarter reading it. ;)
I feel like there could've been quite a bit more explaining of all the backstory. It was so fast paced that I feel like that got left behind a lot.
I pretty much picked up many of the major plot twists early on [foreshadowing FTW] except for WILBERT. WHAT WILBERT WHAT. I had to pause for a minute after his betrayal.
I kind of liked Cyrus's sacrificial moment, as sad as it was. You got the sense that he really did want to make up for his mistake with Ana and actually do something about it. I also liked all of Zelia's KICK BUTT ACTION at the end where she pretty much beat everyone up.
Overall, I think I'll keep an eye out for the sequel and probably read it, but it's not live or die for me to read. I enjoyed it, but didn't absolutely wholeheartedly love it.
[ I probably have more thoughts that I can't really think of right now, so there may be more added to this contribution later ;) ]

I totally agree! I hope they help Cy in the sequel!!! I'm so worried for him but also very proud of what he did.

I don't like where the story ended up. Yes, what Cy did was admirable, but the bad guys get him, a way to weaponize Zel's trait, and don't have to suffer any consequences for it? There needs to be a sequel. Aureus needs to go down!

I feel exactly the same way! I enjoyed reading it, but I didn't love it.

I absolutely loved that book!!
It is so funny and romantic and the story was great.
I cried and hated Micah and loved Zel and Cy and I want to read the sequel right now!!!!!
Anushka wrote: "I loved that part where Zel asks Cy if he knew Latin and he said "I speak the Periodic Table of Elements". That cracked me up so bad.
There is a sequel :D It's called Catalyst and it's coming ou..."
I heard that the second book will come out in 2015.

I really enjoyed it. It definitely has its flaws, but it was a fun read.
It's a shame Wilbert turned out to be part of Aureus - he seemed like the nicest dude! He was one of my favorite characters.
I had a feeling that Cy would end up saving the day. He really grew on me. At first I didn't really like him. But he turned out to be a really strong character.
I thought the ending was a good way to wrap it all up. It gives some closure but still leaves you wondering. Is Cy alive? I think he is. I think Carus is going to round up the gang to save him in the next book. We'll see!

I freaking LOVED it! I'm Spanish and I thought that I might not know enough English to read a futuristic book but I breathed all in. I'm still a bit confused about some things like Zel's dad, like, what the hell? There has to be more on that story.
I really need the second book, I need more Cy.

totally agree with you, I was actually really surprised when I got on here and found out that so many people liked it.

I asked Lydia via Twitter whether Cy is pronounced with an S sound or a K sound and she replied with this:

I'm glad, seeing as this is how I said it in my head for the entire book!

Those were my feelings. I won't be picking up the next book when it comes out but I'll admit I genuinely had fun in the read-along! Will there be another one anytime soon?

It's okay if you did not like the book. There are people who did not like Harry Potter. As far as the Xmen thing goes, they do invite comparison. There is a feeling of outcasts in society and I can see how Carus would be the Xmen and Aureus would be the brotherhood. I do think the similarities are few though.
I agree on the romance thing. It felt forced and cliche' to me. There were many other interesting aspects of the book though. I thought it was very well written for a debut novel. I liked the character development and the pacing.

Yeah there's a lot of really poplar books out there that I didn't like because I'm too picky, especially with YA . Like I want world building and good character development and a pacing I enjoy and a billion other things. But few books have it all for me. Even though I judged control harshly, I still respect everyone's opinion and I'm glad it's making people happy, ya know? It just wasn't my cup of tea.
(PS How can anyone not love Harry Potter?! HP is like my life XD)

I just happened to read the top negative review for the book a week before I decided to read it, which then made me annoyed when certain things happened, because I had someone else's opinion running through my brain from the review.(Without it I probably would of fell in love with this book because I like some cheese)
I enjoyed the read, but I didn't enjoy the book completely :/
I wanted to really like it, especially reading all the posts about people loving it! I will most likely read the next one, as I don't like not finishing series, but I won't anticipate it as much.
Still - WTF Wilbert! WTF Micah! WTF 'Dad'!

This ending was probably the best part of the whole book, the most interesting and the one part that I didn't FORCE myself through. The ending ALMOST makes the whole experience worth it... almost... :c
Though I don't regret it and I won't say I will not read the next book in the series, but I'm not that thrilled.
But I can also feel like it's okay, because this is a debut and most of the time the author gets better with each book, so I won't judge Lydia Kang by this ONE book i didn't enjoy that much c:
Though, I am interested in what will happen to Cy and about the whole truth about Zel and Dyl's father (because I feel like there's a whole lot more).

With her lying, I just thought she was trying to be independent, but yeah, it was kind of dumb. I guess she was scared they'd stop her, but like you said, they wanted to help her! Agreed, 4 stars here too :]

Overall, I give it 4 stars. I really liked it once I got into it. I will definitely be reading book 2!
