https://www.worldswithoutend.com/roll...

Every year, the World's Without End site has a different reading/reviewing challenge.
This year, it's called 'Roll Your Own' and is about creating your own challenge.
There are a bunch of premade challenges you can pick (I picked awards, where you read 12 books that have been awarded different awards) or you can make up your own.

Check it out!

I tried challenging myself to last year's WWE Women's Challenge. I failed miserably! sigh.

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments That looks like fun!

you're terrible! but yes I would definitely beat out all the competition on that challenge.

message 8: by Harkonen (new)

Harkonen | 6 comments I'm challenging myself to read several different books at work and at home, simultaneously.

message 9: by Traci (new)

Traci Loudin (traciloudin) | 11 comments Thanks for linking to this! I've planned to read 18 SFF books by female authors this year, so this is perfect. Of course I keep track of it here on Goodreads too, but I'm now participating in WWE, this one: https://www.worldswithoutend.com/roll...
I wrote a blog post about my personal reasons for tackling this goal: http://www.traciloudin.com/2013/12/20...

message 10: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments I'm also doing the same challenge. For me the difficulty is different than yours. I've always strongly preferred women sci-fi writers (I blame some heavily negative views of women in male writers in my teen years - it might have been Heinlein, but I've actually forgotten.) So for me the challenge is finding completely-new-to-me authors. I'm enjoying the adventure!

message 11: by Traci (new)

Traci Loudin (traciloudin) | 11 comments Yes, I was going to suggest a few authors to you, but I see they're already among those in your Read shelf. Of the 18, a couple are authors I've read before, but I'm pretty sure at least 12 are new-to-me. Looking forward to reading some of your reviews. :)

message 12: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Actually, once I started looking with that particular goal in mind, I began to find tons and tons of possibilities. I'm feeling really excited to see what the year brings me!

have you two read Joanna russ yet?

message 14: by Traci (new)

Traci Loudin (traciloudin) | 11 comments I've heard interesting things about The Female Man, but I haven't read anything by her yet. Good suggestion!

message 15: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Nope, but she's been on my TBR pile for ages! This is totally my opportunity to remedy that situation!

we should do a theme month for her books.....just thinkin'

message 17: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Yeah!

Cool!

this is my list-so-far of female reads for 2014...

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

it's a little bit cheating because I've previously read some Atwood, Bear, Willis and Bujold, but I will probably end up doing some more anyway

message 19: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments You've got an excellent list of books there! I'm less of a planner, I've got sort of a cloud of possibles and I'll wait and see what the year brings me.

that is basically what mine is too-it's what Im thinking about now, listed...lol'

I am 100% I will be editing it for every month out...

message 21: by Weenie (new)

Weenie | 28 comments Thanks for posting this - going to try the WWE Women's Challenge. Shouldn't be too difficult for me to find completely-new-to-me authors as I haven't read that many books by female authors (of any genre for that matter).

message 22: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments The more I look the bigger my list of potential reads gets! And I'm talking really appealing books, not just "maybe's." At this rate I could probably do this challenge five years running. But then I'll probably also want to do the one about focusing in more on a favorite author, because with great books it's impossible not to want to go back and read everything by that author.

message 23: by spikeINflorida (new)

spikeINflorida | 54 comments I've challenged myself to read as many SF books as I can this year with my picks based on quality of content, awards recognition, and positive reader reviews. Author gender was and is not considered.

message 24: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
some of the challenges set up are based on those things as well Spike--I am doing 12 awards in 12 months AND the Female author challenge, so I am trying to get in Female award winners...lol

message 25: by spikeINflorida (new)

spikeINflorida | 54 comments Maggie, I've got a good one on my TR list. U. LeGuin's Left Hand of Darkness. I read it in college...been wanting to read it again. Only female SF author I really like...but read 30+ years ago :/ Feel free to recommend another :]

message 26: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
I read that too and it is one of my favorites!

message 27: by JackM (new)

JackM (jmbr) | 17 comments I've gone for the SF Masterworks Challenge.

message 28: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I've signed up for the Women Writers Challenge for something different.
Will also read male authors of course but don't want to take on too many more challenges right now.

message 29: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Being challenged to read 12 completely-new-to-me female authors has been wonderful! But now I still have to get two more in before the end of the month - and this is a busy month!

message 30: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
I did that one too Alexa, and am on my last book, Zoo City, which has been a pretty quick read

message 31: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Well done!

message 32: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments My plan is to do Ammonite and then Hammered. I'm looking forward to both of them. (And then of course I still have to write the reviews....)

message 33: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Done! Twelve women I had never read before this year - quite an adventure, I recommend it highly!

message 34: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
I know-my sense of accomplishment is all perky!

Next year I want to do a "next-in-series" challenge for myself.....I have way too many books I want to read the next one on!

message 35: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Hmmm, intriguing! But I always feel the need to go back and re-read the first - maybe I need to do some full (already completed) series.

message 36: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments This year I'm combining two challenges, again doing 12 women authors I've never read before, and then also doing the "I just have to read more of that author." So this way I get to count both the new authors and the already-known authors. Feeling quite pleased with my cleverness!
