Rachel: (view spoiler)[ SORELY disappointed in her!! At first I thought MAYBE she was going to be okay, but there are several things about her that really ANGER me: She still drinks, she brought men over for one-nighters? Are you serious!!?? And on top of that, she doesn't comfort her own daughter when she has severe nightmares? Not even after the first one that Rachel experienced? She basically was inconvenienced by her nightmare. UGH...where do all these terrible, un-nurturing mothers come from in YA lit? (hide spoiler)]

Jonathan: (view spoiler)[ At first I wasn't sure, and I'm still not 100% sure, but I think he's a good guy! I like how HE steps up and notices when Emma needs comforting, but so far he hasn't overstepped his boundaries. Praying he doesn't and that he loves Emma in the right way. I don't see him staying with the likes off Rachel, though. I do remember that Emma will be an "adult" in a few months, so I'm wondering if they'll go there with his character and Evan will get the short stick. (hide spoiler)]

Jonathan: (view spoiler)[ I think he needs to dump Rachel, but it would appear that he cares about Emma. He made that statement about not leaving her instead of Rachel by mistake. Dead giveaway. But what kind of love/concern does he really have? I feel for him that he also had a pretty crappy childhood, but that sure gives him and Emma something in common. I still like him a lot. Rachel: (view spoiler)[ She needs to QUIT DRINKING!!! Look at the trouble she also got Emma into because Emma and Jonathan had to go get her from that dump of a bar! (hide spoiler)]

Emma: (view spoiler)[ Parties are a NO NO! When will she learn not to go to parties. None that she goes to seem to be just good, clean fun. I knew it was trouble! From the minute she arrived at the party I wondered why on earth she'd go in. And WHY oh WHY would she let Drew take her home and be alone with him in a car? I was SO SCARED for her when he "accidentally" took her to the wrong place. (hide spoiler)]

Drew: (view spoiler)[Well, thank God he went ahead and took her home, but I'm not so sure his apology is sincere or that he is done causing trouble. Even IFG he is nice now, she can't trust him after the near-rape in book 1, or at least that's what it appeared he was going to do. (hide spoiler)]

I'm okay with the age difference actually...age is just a number and they are adults; however, I really think he has the hots for Emma. Do you get that feeling? I don't think that Rachel is at all ready for a real relationship. I couldn't believe the shower incident! Wasn't that just a little TOO daring and risky with both her mom and Evan there? I don't want Evan to get hurt! (hide spoiler)]

Poor Emma. She just feels SO unwanted and unloved by Rachel. I mean, what mother says, "Don't call me mom." Well, now we know. She never really did want Emma. (hide spoiler)]

Evan: (view spoiler)[ He was SO darn sweet when he was explaining how she wasn't to blame for anything. He is a for sure KEEPER! I hope he does't fall for Analise...that part has me a little scared! (hide spoiler)]

Emma: (view spoiler)[ I can't believe that she got up and walked out the door and left Evan in the condition he was in! I lost some respect for her right then. I am saddened that she's allowed the people in her life who hurt her to make herself believe she doesn't deserve happiness or love. That is what child abuse does and it's a HORRIFIC ATROCITY to commit upon another human being! (hide spoiler)]

Evan: (view spoiler)[ The scene where he had made the swing for Emma was so touching. He held my heart all the way through, and I was SO devastated to see what Jonathan did to him in Rachel's home. Evan didn't even come close to deserving that from Jonathan. After reading the Epilogue I am worried about his mental state and if his experience with Emma and her abusive childhood and the attack on her that he witnessed but held a secret for so long will end up being the demise of Evan as we know him. Jonathan: (view spoiler)[ I can't even tell you how ticked off I was at him for spilling the beans to Evan about all the things that Emma confided in him but not Evan. That was cruel and the epitome of selfishness! I now can't stand him, especially after what he did to Evan. Jonathan has become very scary! (hide spoiler)]

Rachel: (view spoiler)[ That woman almost killed ME! How utterly self-centered and narcissistic she is. What a horrible excuse of a "mother." I don't think she ever one single time said a thing to Emma that was truly positive and altruistic. I was SO angry when she burned the one thing that she KNEW was important to Emma and had sentimental value: the rocking chair. Not only that but the picture of Emma and her dad! Ugh...She is among my most hated characters in all of literature. I hope that Donovan doesn't come back in an attempt to make the reader feel sorry for her due to her own childhood. (hide spoiler)]

Overall: I am speechless after reading the ending and the Epilogue. I was on the edge of my seat during much of this book! I kept wondering if (view spoiler)[ her mother was going to end up beating her up physically. I also had a suspicion of Jonathan, but I didn't know what it was that bothered me. I didn't worry he was going to beat Emma up, but I knew something was wrong. I am just so sad that Emma continues to be in what I think is a depressed state. She's disallowing herself to be happy and to get that love we all deserve. (hide spoiler)]

Thank you to my mom and dad for always being so loving and showing me their pride in me, even until their last days. They disciplined me and they were, at times, too strict, or so I thought, until I was grown and realized they were only protecting me. I am just so thankful I never experienced anything even close to what poor Emma went through. I can't even imagine (view spoiler)[ my own mother never wanting me and letting me know that I was never wanted or loved. I just can't fathom how a mother can't love her own child. (hide spoiler)]
