David Patterson (MrPatterson) | 79 comments Mod
This week we have two questions for you. Please respond to both in separate paragraphs:

ONE:

Nineteen Eighty-Four, along with Fahrenheit 451, is a dystopian novel. The word dystopia is a play on the word "utopia," which means “no place” or “good place.” What might be the point of writing a dystopian novel? What purpose would a writer have in setting a narrative in a terrible place or time? Consider some recent dystopias: V for Vendetta, The Giver, Children of Men, Brave New World, Minority Report, Blade Runner, The Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games, and The Matrix.

TWO:

Eric Blair, using the pen name George Orwell, published Nineteen Eighty-Four in the year 1949. Based on the publication date alone, what might be some thematic or historic influences on the novel? You might want to do a little research to answer this question. We'll feature the best answers to this question in class, and those students will pick up bonus points.

Daniel | 9 comments The point in writing a dystopian novel could be to show the readers what could happen in the near future that's what i'm thinking. This would cause people to think about what they are doing.

Sojourner | 23 comments The point of writing a dystopian novel would be to show people a possible future that they might be able to overcome and think about for a while. The propose a writer setting the narrative in a terrible place or time would be to show people there idea of what the future might look like. The Cold War started in 1947, this could have easily influenced the novel because the Cold War was a sustained state of political and military tension between powers in the United States. http://www.wikipedia.org/

Jake Dropkin | 14 comments The point of writing a dystopian novel is to show people that in the future the things that are being written can happen. He might of used that date because in that year the government had things they hid from the public and if they had certain things that were so bad that the public couldnt know imagine how the future will be when they will make things that will watch over us and manage what we are doing.

message 5: by Eric (new)

Eric Rodriguez | 20 comments Authors might want to write dystopian novels because they have a prediction about there lives in their current reality. I also think that authors may create dystopian stories because they have great imagination and they just want to create one. 1984 is about Big Brother in a society, and this book (in my inference) may be a prediction to what America will be like one day. The authors have strong hatred towards something that relates to the dystopia topic. That is why I think people write dystopian stories.

I think that the author may have some historical references that relate to their novels. In life, history repeats itself. Many nations have had people living peacefully, then having inclining difficulties from the government, and people rebel. Therefore, revolutions occur, and then repeat sometime. America has been a free country for quite some time now, and since history repeats itself, eventually America will somehow have to come to a change/revolution because of overwhelming difficulties from the government. That is what I think about the historical relations towards the dystopian books.

Drew | 16 comments I think to show people what it's like if they were controlled and had no freedom. Or maybe to warn people that a dystopian society is possible and we have to be careful and cautious about what we do.

I think 1984 is a lot like how Stalin ruled Russia. He had complete control over Russia and had secret police keep everyone in order and had them get rid of the trouble makers.

Jahmar | 14 comments I think that the whole point of writing a dystopian novel is to show how life could, and can be if a government became an overpowering system. Its good to see two sides of a story, the free part, and the struggle.

message 8: by Kea (new)

Kea Adams-edwards | 9 comments What might be the point of writting a distopia novel is a point in time where you feel the real world might turn around and change in a bad way. Someone might write one because they feel like something in the world will change the world for worse.

Charisma Ayers | 18 comments What might be the point of writing a dystopian novel?
The point of writing a distopian novel could be, to interest readers and foreshadow into what an author thinks about the future, and to warn people about the world.
What purpose would a writer have in setting a narrative in a terrible place or time? They might want to convey a serious message, or make the part of their book more urgent. They could also want to make it more visual, and give the readers more imagery.

Chasalyn Salce | 9 comments the point of writing a distopian novel might be to show what possibility could happen if we lived in the future no one really knows what the world could be so it nice to read something that people fantasy about

message 11: by Arta (new)

Arta | 6 comments I think the reason to write a distopian novel is to show how some people might imagine the world being in the future and how their opinion on how they think the future will be.
