This week we have two questions for you. Please respond to both in separate paragraphs:

ONE:

Nineteen Eighty-Four, along with Fahrenheit 451, is a dystopian novel. The word dystopia is a play on the word "utopia," which means “no place” or “good place.” What might be the point of writing a dystopian novel? What purpose would a writer have in setting a narrative in a terrible place or time? Consider some recent dystopias: V for Vendetta, The Giver, Children of Men, Brave New World, Minority Report, Blade Runner, The Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games, and The Matrix.

TWO:

Eric Blair, using the pen name George Orwell, published Nineteen Eighty-Four in the year 1949. Based on the publication date alone, what might be some thematic or historic influences on the novel? You might want to do a little research to answer this question. We'll feature the best answers to this question in class, and those students will pick up bonus points.

Charles Raben | 28 comments Why might someone write a Dystopian novel? Because Dystopian novels feel honest. Every society is flawed, and the characters in these books... we feel we can relate to them. We enjoy the intensity of the challenges these characters face. Dystopian novels can be used for political commentary through the lens of an ordinary person, discovering that maybe they themselves live in a dystopian society.

According to online sources, George Orwell was an ex-communist and 1984 is meant to be a satire on Stalinism. The book was written to criticize Stalinism and Totalitarianism. Brutality is not justified. The end will never justify the means.

Emmanuelthomas | 18 comments A person may write a Dystopian novel because they want to show the flaws in society and government or to show the possibility of what our world could be like in the future if we don't pay attention to our present. According to www.thedailybeast.com the novel 1984 by George Orwell was ment to send the message to all people to beware of Totalitarianism were 2+2=5. George Orwell was an excommunist and the book was written to a wear people of Stalinism states and Totalitarianism states were art, music, and theater are only allowed by the government and schools are force to see only what the government wants them to.

Nuridin Wilkerson | 10 comments I think that an author would write a dystopian novel because they want people to see the negative side of not having books, and not being able to think for ourselves. If you think about it, all dystopian novels are set to where the main character is trying to prove why reading and having their own say in things are important. There are some places on earth where people dont have the amount of freedom that we have in the U.S

Freddyv3 | 1 comments well the point of writing a dystopian novel is to make a really intense book. you can go really in depth with the challenges that the character faces. I agree with charles that we can relate to the characters in these books.

george orwell was influenced by politics; mainly dictatorships and nazi germany.

Nicolas R. | 22 comments A person might want to write a dystopian novel as a cautionary tale. The world we read about may very well one day become ours. It is also a good horror story trope.

George Orwell was clearly influenced by WW2 and the Soviet government in Russia. He knew that a large war could create a government like Jospeph Stalin's.

Alvin | 18 comments The point in writing a dystopian novel could be to show how a society can change so drastically over time. It could also represent the authors opinion on their version of the future.

George Orwell was influenced by communist and totalitarianism. This lead to certain ideas being spreaded around in the book itself.

Chelsea | 9 comments 1) So people could show flaws in the world and show how the world isn't as people make it seem. These type of books have more feelings and details you need to pay attention to.

2) George Orwell was influenced by politics.
