What is a Buddy Read?

This is an "Informal Buddy Read"

An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

Book Synopsis
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, doesn’t care much for witches. Still, he’s about to make nice with the local coven by signing a mutually beneficial nonaggression treaty—when suddenly the witch population in modern-day Tempe, Arizona, quadruples overnight. And the new girls are not just bad, they’re badasses with a dark history on the German side of World War II.

With a fallen angel feasting on local high school students, a horde of Bacchants blowing in from Vegas with their special brand of deadly decadence, and a dangerously sexy Celtic goddess of fire vying for his attention, Atticus is having trouble scheduling the witch hunt. But aided by his magical sword, his neighbor’s rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and his vampire attorney, Atticus is ready to sweep the town and show the witchy women they picked the wrong Druid to hex.

Esther (nyctale) I started early but I just finish a book and this one called to me. 4 chapters in. And i have a big smile on my face while reading. The discussion at the begining with Leif was too funny.

This being said, this one may turn out darker than the first. Or maybe not.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments This one is really good Esther. I have to give it to Atticus, he's cool under pressure.

Kristie | 3595 comments Yes! I'm about halfway through and was quite impressed with how he handled the situation when 2 goddesses visited him one right after the other...I won't say more, but everyone will know what I'm talking about when they get there.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I'll start this one tomorrow

*happy dance*

Those two goddesses are creepy/scary.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments FYI According to the Encyclopedia Britannica:
Tuatha Dé Danann, (Gaelic: “People of the Goddess Danu”), in Celtic mythology, a race inhabiting Ireland before the arrival of the Milesians (the ancestors of the modern Irish). They were said to have been skilled in magic, and the earliest reference to them relates that, after they were banished from heaven because of their knowledge, they descended on Ireland in a cloud of mist. They were thought to have disappeared into the hills when overcome by the Milesians. The Leabhar Gabhála (Book of Invasions), a fictitious history of Ireland from the earliest times, treats them as actual people, and they were so regarded by native historians up to the 17th century. In popular legend they have become associated with the numerous fairies still supposed to inhabit the Irish landscape.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Thanks Lisarenee.

You know, one of my problems to get in the story is that I always thought of the Tuatha Dé Danann as the Fae. And in Hounded I got the idea that the fae are gods instead of the "usual" ones. So my brain is still confuse with that notion.

I guess being in the middle of Shadowfever at the same time didn't helped.

They are in some ways very similar and others totally different.

The Tuatha Dé Danann appear in The Silver Bough (which i read some what recently), since it happens in Ireland, and they are portrait as very tiny, very very very old, and having a connection with Avalon.

Kristie | 3595 comments One of my favorite one-liners in the book (occurs during the final big battle scene):

The first one's not really a spoiler, but just in case... (view spoiler)

Too funny!

Also from that same scene about 2 minutes later, (view spoiler)

Love the little comments in this book. :)

Eni | 2349 comments i just finished.. can we start book 3 now? =D

though it seems like he just keeps having bad things happening to him.. how on earth did he managed to survive for so long if his life was always in mortal peril? o_O

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Eni wrote: "*very small? *blushes*"

No you got it right. I just don't recall anything I read saying they were tiny people. That kind of puts a different spin on them.

I've been asking myself that very question with each book. He keeps getting himself in deeper and deeper. Just wait. I'm reading Hunted right now. So far I haven't lost my interest in the series yet.

He always used to move away to a new location, remember? He had a life in hiding. Now that he has decided to stay where he is, he will be dealing with this kind of stuff. Plus, there always seems to be one that gets away. There were a couple that got away or were let go in this book. Can't wait to see how that plays out in book 3. Of course, the next book should be him taking on Thor (Hammered - seems about right!). I'm sure he'll have to deal with something because of that in the fourth book!

Lisarenee | 7659 comments FYI, in book three Hearne gets a little goofy but I still liked it. All I'll say is he had me shaking my head while laughing.

Kristie | 3595 comments Oh boy... Looking forward to it.

If you can't wait, the discussion thread is up. Here's the link

Eni | 2349 comments I have way to many things to read >_> i'm sure i can wait lol

Anima Miejska | 757 comments I'm in chapter 11 and love it. I am listening to audio this time and it is superb, much more fun than reading it. And of course, Oberon is outstanding character. I laugh a lot, and it doesn't happen often :)

Kristie | 3595 comments Glad you like the audio. I enjoy it too. :)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments I just finished. I was the opposite of Anima - I listened to the audiobook a few years ago and this time read it. I love the narration on these, but I have the hardest time concentrating on audio, so for me this was a better way to experience the book.

I love the big battle at the end! I also appreciate that the events of each book carry through somewhat to the later ones. And Oberon is just hilarious!

It's really worth buying the audiobooks for this series.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments idk if you guys are getting started today but i just started and i'm dying at atticus trying to teach lief [sp?] how to ~talk modern~. when he was like 'well life was harder in those days' i immediately though of what we do in the shadows when he says he was 16 and then goes 'of course in those days life was very hard for a 16 year old'.

i'm listening to the UK version for this one and i'm not sure which one i like better but just wanted to say that oberon's voice is ridiculous in both of them. i guess you just can't do a talking dog voice without making it sound that way

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I meany to start today but haven't felt so good. Since flying to vegas a couple days ago, my head has felt off - I've been super dizzy and started feeling nauseous as well. I just flew back to LA and am trying to rest in the hopes that I feel better.

Claudia | 435 comments @Cathy That sucks. get some rest and hope you feel better.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments Aw, I hope you feel better soon :(

Claudia | 435 comments I’m in the middle of chapter 12 and just want to pop in and just comment on Atticus and his character.

I think we can officially judge that despite being 2,000 years old he seems to be permanently mentally stuck at around like 12 years old. Like the whole thing about being unable to talk to Granuaile because she’s in a nighty and being reduced to babbling like a guy whose encountered his first crush. The fact that he seems to have problems controlling himself like a teenager barely entering puberty is kind of weird considering his age.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i think i'm around chapter 14 or so. and i agree that it is a bit weird considering his age. that whole scene where granuaile was in her nighty had me rolling my eyes so much and also how he always starts talking about baseball i'm like lmao could you be anymore of a stereotype if you tried? also and i think this might be just a chapter or so after where you are now but (view spoiler). but then slightly later the morrigan is just chilling out naked again and he's like 'it's kind of nice to not have to deal with american views on morality' or something and i'm like ???? but you have a minor meltdown if you see a woman in her underwear???

i promise i don't actually hate him OR these books but that's just like my biggest pet peeve honestly. the parts with coyote made me laugh though and also the parts with laksha [sp?]. i think this might be one of those series where i like the side characters more than the main. not that i necessarily have anything against atticus but like you said he's 2000 years old so maybe act like it on occasion. i do find that very few authors actually write immortal characters in what i consider a realistic way though.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments anyway i think i spoke too soon bc i just finished chapter 14 and i think i officially need A Break from this series after this book lol #sorry

Claudia | 435 comments Next week I’m going to reread the last October Daye book to refresh myself on it before the new book comes out so that’s fine taking a break since the week after that we will be reading the new October Daye book.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments ok sounds good. like i said i will probably be continuing this series eventually but idk if i will be a good buddy read participant since i am just rolling my eyes too much at this point lol

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments well i finished today, gonna have to give some serious consideration to whether i want to continue going with the series at a later date. this review sums up my feelings about the book pretty well i think. while there are definitely a lot more female characters than male ones in this book, most of the female characters are not taken seriously at all and are either constantly trying to sleep with atticus or are being constantly described by him only in terms of how sexy they are. [sigh] sorry guys, this might just be a miss for me.

Claudia | 435 comments So I'm about to start chapter 16 now but am popping in to comment on how deeply uncomfortable I am by the whole Atticus/ Morrigan sex thing. That whole scene was basically just sexual assault/rape. Cause Atticus went along with it but he didn’t enjoy it at all. He summed it up in the words “oww”. I was extremely put off by that and how this theme was addressed as a whole. Then Brighid shows up and also tries to use sex as a weapon and I’m just like nope.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i knooooow. and it was basically played for laughs too so i was just like like WOW can't believe all that just happened. the whole goddess sex game thing just got so much worse in this book.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Sorry guys, not feeling that much better. Can't read, just staying in bed mostly sleeping. Was at ER all day yesterday and can only assume that vertigo was cause by the air pressure from the flight since MRI and other tests were clean. Not quite as dizzy and nausea is better but reading just isnt in thecards for me until this goes away. Ths really sucks.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments wow that does sound awful :( have you had trouble with flying before or did this just come out of nowhere? it's been years since i've flown anywhere lol

Claudia | 435 comments @Cathy That sounds horrible I hope you feel better soon. I hate flying and am always paranoid about something happening because of it. Have you ever had any problems flying before?

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments claudia, i see you finished and we apparently share a rating for this book. unfortunate :(

Claudia | 435 comments Yeah I finally Finished! I put it down for a bit before picking it back up to finish.

So I honestly do not know how I feel about this book. I waffle between 2 or 3 stars but ultimately it was a 2 star for me. I juts couldn’t get over the sex as a weapon thing. Like on the plus side it was a quick read and it had its moments that made me laugh so I enjoyed it. On the other hand there were several unsettling things that happened that kept me from fully enjoying the book.

@Devann I went and read that review you linked and found that I agreed with it. Like It points out the problems I had with the story. I think I’m going to keep listening to the audiobooks though. I have all the books so I am going to keep listening to them.

Do you want to switch over to BR to the wolves books? Or is there another series you want to buddy read?

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i think the other options were the i bring the fire books [first one is wolves so i'm guessing that's what you mean] or incryptid and honestly i'm not super in the mood for incryptid lol. but we won't be reading something new til mid september anyway since we're taking a week off then doing the new october daye so we don't have to decide now. i'm open to other suggestions but also i feel like i'm so picky about urban fantasy these days because a lot of authors just seem to go by a formula and it's very boring. this one did have a lot of originality to it really but also there was the other stuff that i can't really ignore after this book

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Yikes you guys hated this more than I thought you would! I got the sense after the 1st one that you wouldn't be fans of this series. Oh well, onto the next!

I am finally feeling better, thank you! I've never had problems flying, never had this happen before. It was really horrible, I couldn't get out of bed, couldn't stand up because the spinning and nausea made me so sick. And i tried to keep hydrated but it came back up every time so I got dehydrated on top of it. We're going on a cruise in March and flying to San Fran in November so really hoping this was a fluke and the imbalance in my head can be corrected.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments haha yeah, i knew i wasn't going to absolutely love it but i didn't think it was going to make me this upset or i would not have even done this one, but oh well. i can see why other people would like it but definitely not for me.

Claudia | 435 comments @Cathy I’m glad you’re doing better.

On the book I didn’t hate it but I was unhappy about a lot of it which took away from my enjoyment of the story. Like I would be enjoying it and then boom something would happen to put me off due to the behavior of the characters. Like I told Devann I’m going to finish the series as I already have the books but it’ll be slow.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments hope you have a good time rereading the last october daye book this week claudia!

yesterday i was listening to an audio book of a book that i had read before and it started up and was like 'narrated by luke daniels' and i audibly groaned lol. i don't even hate the guy as a narrator but also now i will always associate him with this series which isn't necessarily great. also it was a frankenstein retelling so i was like ??? why did you get a narrator with an american accent? i know he can do other accents but he didn't in this other book so it was weird.
