I might have to resort to that at some point in the near future. My TBR shelf is starting to get a bit out of control...
To pick my next read, I look at a number of criteria. I scan for an interesting title and font, then I look at the cover. I read the synopsis of the book, and then the first few pages. If all of those things interest me, I take the book down and give it a go. If after 100 pages, it doesn't make me want to keep reading, I start all over again. :)
A lot of the books I read are titles I find from newsletters I subscribe to from Penguin and Goodreads. Usually, I check out the ratings of a book on Goodreads too, but even if the ratings aren't particularly high I still read it. It depends on if the synopsis interests me or not.
I check out the title, the cover, the genre, & the plot if it's an author I'm not familiar with. If it's a favorite author, I read it regardless. I've found some pretty good books based on title alone.
Usually when choosing a book, I have a genre in mind. So then I look around the bookstore or library and pick up covers that represent that. You know like if i'm craving a romantic book, I gravitate towards pastely covers with a cute simple design while fantasies have to have a cool epic darkness. Then i usually just look at the synopsis and open the book randomly for a minute and I can usually tell if I want it from there.
*She walks into the library and scans the shelves, mumbling under her breath. You only catch snippets of authors names and titles. Suddenly she stops and picks up a book, reading the summery. She nods and walks up to the front desk, book under arm*That is how I pick a book, I just pick one up and if I like it I take it. I usually reads all the books of an author if I like their books.
I used to browse the bookstore shelves and read the synopsis, about the author, and the first few pages before buying a book. But now I usually read those things and lots of reviews first online. If it's an author I already love, I get the book regardless. So many good books and no time to waste on bad ones. Lol!
