I suppose you could compare this book with "The Ring" and "The Grudge," because as in most Japanese ghost stories, the ghost is out for revenge. The opening line, "Japanese ghosts are different, your ghosts will not feel at home here," sets the tone for the rest of the story. It is a good story but I gave it only three stars because the main character of the book is helpless. He meets his host (a British English teacher) in the Japanese village of Izumi and she pretty much takes charge and holds his hand through the process of discovering what happened to Reiko and her friends. The book is a quick read and I think most horror and ghost story lovers will appreciate it.
