question
Best cast movie roles based on a book character

My book club was talking about the best casting in terms of the actor chosen to portray a character from a book that was made into a movie (someone was moaning about the diminutive Tom Cruise playing "Reacher").
Two that came to mind for me were Ian McKellen as "Gandolf" & Noomi Rapace as "Lisbeth Salander". I thought both of them were absolutely perfect & just how I pictured those characters as I read the books.

I agree with the Gandalf casting. One that comes to mind more recently was Woody Harrelson's portrayel as Haymith in The Hunger Games movies.
Read the book ,seen the movie, and I like Tom Cruise but Josh Brolin would be my pic for the Reacher series. If you see Oldboy (2013), a film by Spike Lee, you might agree.

In an earlier age I suspect Sam Elliiot would have been perfect for Jack Reacher

For me the casts of both "Silence of the Lambs & Hannibal" are brilliant.
Liam Neeson as Reacher would have been my choice.
LOTR was brilliantly cast as are both of the Hobbit movies.
Sean Connery is one of those brilliant casting choices that happen too rarely, of course I mean as James Bond

When I found out the film was coming out I wanted to read the book first but I ended up doing the opposite and I'm glad I did! I enjoyed the movie, but the book was a LOT more enjoyable. While reading the book I kept picturing Tom Cruise's face(which was fine by me lol) but Reacher was described as extremely different in every way to Tom Cruise for example height (Reacher is extremely tall) This is the only Lee Child book that I've read but I will deffo be picking up other books in the Jack Reacher series!
Even though the mini-series was on the corny side, the casting for Stephen King's The Stand was spot-on!
Martin Freeman not only portrays Bilbo perfectly, he surpasses it with more humor and emotions. Maybe that's why unlike everybody else, i liked the movie better. *Guilty*
Jack Reacher is 6ft4, how can anyone think that Tom Cruise was the correct choice for the movie!
Agreeing with Mark on Sean Connery as Bond. I read all the Bond books years ago as a child at the same time his Bond films were in theaters. Those movies have held up over the years, especially the first three.
The cast of Clint Eastwood's adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 'Mystic River' also stands out. Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon head a great ensemble cast. Eastwood is one of my favorite directors.
Tim Robbins again, with Morgan Freeman, in 'The Shawshank Redemption'.
Two adaptations of James Lee Burke's excellent Robicheaux novels have had mixed success, but Tommy Lee Jones in 'In the Electric Mist' was a much better choice than Alec Baldwin in 'Heaven's Prisoners'.
I'm with the majority on Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. So were the critics for the most part.

From one of the most powerful (no pun intended) movies l've ever seen, The Power of One, l nominate Morgan Freeman as Geel Piet and Daniel Craig as Sgt. Botha. Eventhough l've seen the movie over ten times (as an introduction to Apartheid in high school history classes l taught) and only read the book once, l'm not certain which is the one to watch/read first.
I felt Tom Cruise was completely wrong for the part of Reacher. He just doesn't have the right personality for the part. And wouldn't you know he couldn't do the part without having cars and such going on. Reacher was not a man of words, more of action and not big on machines. Cruise just couldn't pull it off. I was very disappointed in the show because of him.
I always wanted Ray Stevenson to play Reacher, Cruise' casting was very disappointing. Agree with the LOTR casting, my favorite was Orlando Bloom as Legolas. Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies I think were terrifically cast, especially Roderick. And it's another TV series, but LOVE Titus Welliver as Hieronymus Bosch.
I have to admit, being a devoted fan of Child's Reacher series, I was disappointed in the decision to cast Tom Cruise as Reacher, but overall, he did okay.
I think the best actor's adaptation from page to screen I've ever seen was Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in Too Kill A Mockingbird.

Duvall as Cash, the gun range owner in Jack Reacher was perfect and exactly how I pictured the character when I read One Shot. Kinda makes up for the

Apparently the Mark Greaney books (Court Gentry Series) was in production and Brad Pitt had signed on to play the part of Court. It's too easy picking an A list star, but there are some actors I could see playing the part better (Timothy Olyphant) did great with a not so great script in Hitman.
So maybe worth considering Tim for the part of Gentry..
