SOLVED. Psychological Coming-of-age Novel Interwoven with the Story of Hamlet [s]

I know this book was the author's first novel, and that the author is female. I think it was published in 1998, or around that time. I thought the word 'daughter' was a part of the title, but I'm not sure. Also, I'm pretty sure it was interwoven with the story of Hamlet, specifically, but I suppose it could have been some other tragedy by Shakespeare. The protagonist is troubled in this book and her mind is sort of fragmenting. Maybe it was written in the style of a correspondence? It's a long book; I'm not sure that it's a 'good' book (though I remember it was notable and dubbed ambitious when it was published); I really liked it when I was twenty.

I've searched extensively for this title; any help would be appreciated---it's starting to drive me a little crazy.

I don't know the name of that book but I do remember checking out books from the Multnomah County Library with you around 1997 and one of them was by an author you had an interest in, Padraick Pearse. Does that jog your memory at all?

did you ever check out our sometime sister?? because if its not the book you are looking for, this is the sound of me eating my hat: ahsh ahsh ahsh. it was written in 1998 - female first time novelist. its about the disintegration of a female character and hamlet. there is at least one long letter in the middle of it. it won the minnesota book award and was a discover award finalist...its long-ish - about 450 pages...it has to be i tell you! please believe me!
