Cumbling Michael (CumblingMichael) | 165 comments This is a long shot, as I remember very little of substance about the book. I read it in my teens, perhaps 1966-67. It was a paperback novel. I think the narrative was (at least in part) located in a university or research lab. The only thing I can remember for certain is the deliciously bizarre phrase "Doctors fought all night to save his life, but it overpowered them and escaped". I think in the book this may have been a reference to a newspaper article or headline. I have remembered the quote ever since, but I cannot for the life of me remember the book it came from. Any ideas?

The Tin Men Contains this bit of text:

"In a plush night-club doctors struggled desperately to save his life. But it overpowered them and escaped."

It was published first in 1965 and has to do with automatic creation of newspaper articles at a research lab. So I think it's your book.

Cumbling Michael (CumblingMichael) | 165 comments You found it! Amazing! Even more amazing, given that I'd misremembered the quote. I did read The Tin Men around that time, but I'd forgotten about the computer headline generation system. The bit that sticks in my mind is the insane scene of (view spoiler).
As I remember, it was a very funny satire.
Many thanks.
