I'm sure I am not the only one who imagines what it would be like to be on the other end of a book...To be the one who is actually living the adventure that I read about so often...

If you were the main character in one of these books...
What type of character would you be?
Would you have powers?
Would you be a kick-ass fighter?
Etc....

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments I enjoy imagining but no way would I really like to do it. Fighting and magic etc...

I'm a huge dreamer, which is probably why I have wanted to be an author for most of my life! I imagine these type of scenarios all the time...

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Hmm. That's tough. I think I'd be a traveler through various mythical lands. I'd love from hop from folk/fairy tale as an observer (and sometimes participant).

Okay, lets see here...

I would be a female in her later teens-mid twenties. I would def be a kick-ass fighter. I would want to be either a shifter, vampire, or a woman with psychic abilities. I would want to be in the world as we know it, but belong to an underground society of some sort. I would def. want to fall in love with someone else who belonged to the "supernatural underground society". The relationship would have to start out as a love/hate relationship...I would def have to kick some bad guy butt! LOL

Anyone else? LOL

message 6: by Melissa (new)

Melissa If this is a topic that intrigues you, you should read The Eyre Affair, by Jasper Fforde. It takes place in 1985, but 1985 is the future. The main character is Thursday Next, and she goes in and out of the classics. She talks to the characters, interacts, etc. It's not the same as if we could do it, but it's the closest we'll get. Very fun. I've read the second book, and can't wait to read the next two.
And for those following the numerous vampire series, there's even a bit of that. Miss Haversham from Great Expectations is my favorite literary character so far. She is awesome. Want to know what it would be like to be trapped in Poe's The Raven, read the second book.

LOL When I was in 6th grade, we had to read a book, dress up as our fav character from that book, and give a speech in front of our families. I chose Miss Havisham! I remember really enjoying Great Expectations, but I haven't read it since then...

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Melissa wrote: "If this is a topic that intrigues you, you should read The Eyre Affair, by Jasper Fforde. It takes place in 1985, but 1985 is the future. The main character is Thursday Next, and she goes in and ou..."

I've been meaning to read those, Melissa. Very cool concept.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I wouldn't mind being in a steampunk setting. Victorian with some new technology thrown in. Fun, fun, fun.

message 10: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) If I were to be thrown into a fantasy adventure, I'd definitely want to be a kick-ass fighter. As for powers, maybe a little bit of psychic powers would be cool, but I'd rather them be for back up, in case ass-kicking fails. lol

I am thinking something similar to the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton (but pre-orgy plot, of course). Maybe with a little bit of a cyberpunk twist. So maybe a mixture of pre-orgy Anita Blake and Eve from the J.D. Robb series, but with a fantasy twist of course. Yes... That could be fun. :D

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I loved Anita Blake pre-sexathon. I was so disappointed at the change. She was my hero, not any more. Is Eve kickbutt? People have been recommending that series to me.

message 12: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) Yes, Eve is an ass-kicker. And I felt the same way. I LOVED that series until LKH started in with the "sexathon", lol. I don't know why she did that. Couldn't she have just started an erotica series or something? She had to go and mess it up. :(

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Yeah, she totally could have just started an erotica series. I felt so betrayed. I'm still mad at her about it.

message 14: by coeli (new)

coeli (goodreadscomboogaloo) i would want to have magic powers!!!!
i always like the"bad guy" so i would be...

message 15: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I'd want my character to be a more serious type. Quiet and watchful and protective. Definitely can kick if necessary but hates violence. But she can be fun too. Powers I'd want are power of persuasion, maybe read minds, detect evil. Time period - I don't really care but I do love modern conveniences :)

message 16: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) Danielle wrote: "Yeah, she totally could have just started an erotica series. I felt so betrayed. I'm still mad at her about it."

Don't worry, Danielle. Me too. It was an incredibly good series until she pulled that crap. I don't understand why she did that... Is she not getting any in real life? Did some of her fans who were not getting any in real life bug her until she did it? Or did she decide she just wanted to write another Meredith Gentry orgy-fest series?

Back to the topic at hand before I get fussed at for thread hi-jacking...lol

ass-kicker
psychic powers
throw in some cyberpunk
werewolves are nice ;)
bad boys are delightful >:)
no orgies please

LMAO!!!! I love your list...especially your very last comment "no orgies please". That made me laugh. :)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) yeah, that's a good list, BonFire.

Pamela, I like your description. I like a calm, thoughtful heroine who thinks things through before she starts kicking butt.

message 19: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 778 comments I think Anita Blake was also awesome in the beginning. I'm glad I'm not the only one that got disappointed when the series turned into erotica. She would be a fun character since she's all kick-ass but also has her own powers. I think if I could ideally be sucked into a book, it would be someplace different. Something along Lord of the Rings type environment. And I would want to be a witch or a mage. Something with magical powers. Fireballs shooting out of my hands. You know, that type of thing.

message 20: by Gothicladybug (new)

Gothicladybug | 32 comments um for me id like to visit many series but dont think id want to live there full time and i i agree with the anita blake stuff im tired of it and juggling all the demands of that many men however easy on the eyes would be tiresom i have hobbies damn it i dont want to spend my life having sex and riasing zombies

message 21: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I would like to be like Cat from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. But with maybe a little more down time with Bones between battles. Ha

message 22: by Elvia (last edited Aug 11, 2009 11:19AM) (new)

Elvia (elvb) I'm with all of you on the wanting to be a kick-ass chick.
Vampire Hunter
Demon Hunter
Fireball Hands - sounds good Kristina!
Extra strength - I do like that about Anita now
Super Healing - like when people drink vamp blood in Night Huntress

As for which world I would choose live in...hmmm. I'm not sure.
I like the worlds where all supernatural beings are out in the open for the most part: Anita Blake, Mercy Thompson, Rachel Morgan.

message 23: by Starling (new)

Starling OK, yes, I'd rather been Eve than Anita. Frankly I'd prefer Eve's life which is normal most of the time, and rather luxurious all of the time. And mostly she isn't in danger.

message 24: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) Is Eve from the In Death books?

message 25: by Starling (new)

Starling Yes, she is. I wasn't sure if I was being clear or not. Guess not as clear as I'd have liked to be.

But truly, I would not like to have had the life of most of the characters in books that I read. I enjoy VISITING that life, but I would not like to live it.

But I can see living Eve's life. She is good at her job. What is not to like in that? She has developed good friends. We see her develop most of them in the series, but there are one or two from even before that and they are quality people. She is living with the love of her life, and he loves her back. What is not to like with that situation? And he is really "pretty" too.

message 26: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I've read the first one I think...it's where she first meets him and he's a suspect, right? I think I will try her second one.

message 27: by Starling (new)

Starling The first three books are a trilogy. When she got the contract she was just an uppity Harlequin author who thought she could write longer books. Someone gave her a chance and before she finished the first couple of books, the contract went to 5 or 6 in that series.

message 28: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 1184 comments I'd be a strong and capable woman, with a sharp wit and and sharp sword!

message 29: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) Nice Stormhawk! Not sure about the sword for me, though. Give me a gun...maybe some knives.

message 30: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 1184 comments It's a fantasy novel.

Were the question about a mystery or adventure novel set at any time from the Wild West days and after, I'd definitely have a gun! Guns. And Knives. And maybe still a sword, as a quirky personality thing. I'm thinking one of those Zatoichi walking stick swords ... Modern cities tend to flip out when you walk around with a long sword on your hip.

message 31: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 778 comments I think swords would be cool. That actually takes practice and skill to use those with any efficiency. Anyone can use a gun. Strap some swords on. Maybe hide some daggers under your clothes. It's got to be easier than trying to conceal guns. Well, tprobably not.

message 32: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) Unless you hide it like Anita Blake - behind long hair on a strap along your spine! Sweet. Although it's not technically a sword...just a long blade. Still...sweet.

message 33: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) I am with you. Especially on the daggers. I love daggers. Swords and daggers don't run out of bullets. :D

Now I must update my list again.

Ass-kicker
A smart-ass (Because I am one in real life, and it is my character after all.)
Psychic powers as backup (Nothing major, maybe just being extremely good at analyzing a situation and second guessing an opponent.)
Lots of weapons. Hidden everywhere. A couple guns, a sword, some hidden knives and daggers. Can't be too prepared.
Cyberpunk-ish setting
Werewolves, shifters, vampires, mages, sorceresses and whatever else you can think of. Mix 'em up and throw 'em all in there.
Bad boys. :D
No orgies please.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I agree with your list BonFire. Sounds great. I'd like the ability to do any martial art and use any weapon. I'm not much for guns, although I like the gunplay in the John Woo movies and Equilibrium. I'd rather be an accomplished archer and swordswoman. Having accelerated healing would be great, and to be able to heal people as well.

message 35: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I like that list BonFire. Although I'm not sure about having people in my world that can do magic against me. Seems an easy way to die. lol

message 36: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) You have a point. I would either need some magical ability as well or some way to negate it. Hmmm. Ok I want the ability to use energy for defensive purposes (such as forming a shield against magical attacks).

And I'd prefer using my ass-kicking techniques and daggers, with guns as back-up. And I agree, accelerated healing would be nice. lol

message 37: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) Very nice! Shields...great Idea!!
I like the idea that LKH has in her most recent books - SWAT with abilities. That would be AWESOME!

I would want a sword, throwing knives, shurikens, but no guns. I don't really like guns...
Would def. need a shield. LOL

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) A shield is a really good idea. I'd love to have spy gadgets that were magical too.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That's not weird at all. I used to act out stuff all the time. I will say some scenes from stories I am writing out loud to see how they sound.
