Reggie_Love wasn't the killer stated at the end of the book? or did I just assume? you're making me question myself!

message 3: by Denise (new)

Denise | 4 comments I think its the butler at the end talking about them poisoning the mice in the attic with sugar donuts

message 4: by Reggie_Love (new)

Reggie_Love yeah, two of the servants were discussing the mother ordering the donuts, but this post/question makes me rethink of all that. I thought it was clear cut.

Nicole (rhavenize) | 20 comments I really need to read it again at some point this year.

Galadriel Thoman (khylira) | 4 comments The book, I believe, pinned it completely on the mother, unless I am not remembering correctly. I need to read it again, I think.

message 7: by Reggie_Love (new)

Reggie_Love yeah, the book made it seem like it was only the mother.

That's what I thought too.

message 9: by Reggie_Love (new)

Reggie_Love I thought the book stated that the grandmother didn't know about the poison. The mom did it because she wanted the money.

message 10: by Janelle (new)

Janelle | 9 comments in petals on the wind the mother confesses to doing it because she wanted to make them sick enough to take them to a hospital and get them out of the house.

message 11: by Shan (new)

Shan (hoxharding) | 1 comments I thought it was the Mother.

message 12: by Shyla (new)

Shyla | 19 comments In the end of the book FITA Chris tells Cathy it was the mom because the grandmother was too religious and she had nothing to gain by poisoning them. But that is just what Chris and Cathy THINK, there is never any proof who it was for sure which always bothered me since obviously the grandmother was the one that brought the food up and prepared it. Plus the mom was gone for months at a time on her honeymoon and trips with Bart but they still got the donuts......

DAulan Collins (daulan-collins) | 5 comments I thought at first it was the grandmother trying to kill them off one by one because she was cruel and the children were a disrespect to the family line, but then I ended up thinking it was the mother, she was getting everything again, she had before she married her husband (cousin) Chris and now they were in the way and it would be a way of getting the problems out of her life so she could go back to being her daddy's girl.

message 14: by Shyla (new)

Shyla | 19 comments But that does not explain how she got the poison on the donuts that the GRANDMOTHER brought them each day even when the mother was not there. Never, not once does the mother bring them the food, it is always the grandmother. And the donuts begin to arrive while the mother is still on her honeymoon.

I thought there were pancakes, that the grandmother would bring in with "powder sugar" on them as well?

Deepthought (deepthought1) | 4 comments I think given Chris's character, there must a reason why he would think it was his mother whom he loved and had faith in. There must have been something explicitly stated excluding the codicil explanation that would lead him to conclude it was Corrine and not Olivia, whom he detested very much. John Amos must have stated something else... Maybe Corrine used John to apply the poison on the doughnuts. I believe Olivia knew and just didn't care what Corrine did to wipe out the "Devil's spawn"- her sin which was bigger than she initially thought. She let Corrine do the dirty work and have blood on her hands. While she remained indifferent and carried up the doughnuts merely warning them to please her guilty mind. That warning was half hearted - no child would say no to doughnuts. Thinking it a treat.

Jaime H (jaimehuff1) | 1 comments I am fairly certain that it was the mother and John Amos. iirc, from further books it was clarified or Corinne confessed. I have no doubt that it was a mutual event. Corinne would lose every drop of her inheritance if it the children were EVER discovered. Corinne only TOLD the kids she did it so they could get removed from the house to the hospital but ... I don't buy it. Her greed became her obsession.

Kendy (missmuffcake) | 3 comments In the end the children suspected it was the mom (that is why they did not go to the cops*), but it still left questions. I asked another group but I am glad I have more concrete answers here!

Susan (suesane) | 2 comments I don't know as I haven't seen the lifetime movie yet!

message 20: by Laci (new)

Laci (lacireading) | 5 comments no. just because the grandmother said it was the mother doesn't meant you can believe her. based on the lifetime movie. the books actually told you who did it.

message 21: by Trish (new)

Trish Mitchell | 1 comments i always thought it was the mother that did the poisoning i liked the older version they got revenge on their mother

message 22: by Ann (new)

Ann Vogel | 1 comments its been awhile since I've read the books but pretty sure it was the mother, grandmother had little motive to kill, she was "happy" to terrorize, torture & captivate the children as their prison warden, even after the grandfather died she went on for months keeping the charade of hiding them, even when the mother was away. She'd even shown them a small dose of kindness from time to time. Her brand of villain lacked killer instinct. the counterfeit mother however made snap decisions, and grew increasing disturbed by their very existence showed little remorse for anything that was going on she has the clear motive

Paige Duff | 9 comments I have not been able to was not able to watch and forgot to have it recorded at my moms. I read the book just a month or so ago, it was the mother. She wanted to make the kids sick enough to take them to the hospital, but then Cory died and the rest ran away...... it was my second read through, I read them for the first time back about ten years ago.

message 24: by Kendy (new)

Kendy (missmuffcake) | 3 comments i think it could still be up in the air? could they really believe the grandma?

message 25: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Dickens | 6 comments I think it was the mom. At times, The grandma tried to show compassion. I feel like it was one of those times. She said they were bad for them in the movie so I think she was warning them

message 26: by Kristy (last edited Jan 20, 2014 10:14AM) (new)

Kristy (kristypetree) I agree with Stacy. The grandma, however horrible she was, showed a couple of soft spots ...mentioning that warning about the donuts, giving them the flowers for their garden, and her reaction to the Christmas gift they made for her.

Also, I only read the first book, so who was responsible in the books?

message 27: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 3 comments I am not sure which movie I am more disappointed in, this most recent one or the other one where Kristy Swanson played Cathy. Both films swayed too far from the actual story. Very disappointed in both.

message 28: by Susan (new)

Susan (suesane) | 2 comments I think it was the grandmother. She was just so mean!
