ABANDONED. Old book about a guy and old man on some quest...

I haven't read this book in several years. But the only thing I really remember about it is, there is an old man and a guy who travels to a place (I think it was called the edge or Eden) and its a place that is supposedly perfect with perfect people. While the rest of the world is basically in ruins living poorly.
