Also, I know that The Neverending Story can be enjoyed without the Auryn, but as it is a present from me to them, I want the book to have it.

I just became an Aunty & cannot wait to share books with my niece! Have fun shopping for titles :)
Me, I recommend The Wombles to absolutely everybody of every age, but especially 8-ish-year-olds. Of course, hardly anybody listens... :P
I'm definitely adding The Wombles to my tbr! I just love the name!
Also, Mrs. Mike was a wonderful book I read in that age range. It was based on a true life story. And I just discovered was continued in a series of "Mrs. Mike" books.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret was lovely and combines the graphic novel element nicely.

Sandy, this actually helps a lot. I'd been thinking of looking at children's lit award winners as the quality is likely to be better. It's tricky because while a synopsis is written to make a book marketable, sometimes what marketing people think it's marketable may sound unappealing. :P It'd be easier if I'd actually read these books. So yes, research is in order.
Prepping for 2015 and wondering if the Genre Challenge will be running again in 2015? I joined the group too late to do it this year, but it looks like fun if it's going again next year :)

Yes! The genres will be slightly different, just to mix things up a little, but it's kind of our signature challenge, so it'll be back. :)

Great, I'll make a spot for it in my personal challenge area :)

Question for the mods-are members allowed to start threads in the 'Book Chat' section, or is that a mod only thing? I thought it would be fun to start a thread, asking what people's top reads of 2014 were, but I didn't want to start a thread if I wasn't supposed to :) I'd love to hear what books people loved this year-my TBR list could use a few new additions :D
Of course members are allowed to make threads, in generally any section! We try to encourage it, but we often don't see many people making them. We'd love for people to make more! :)
Go right ahead and make it. It's an excellent idea, and could spark some really interesting discussions!

I was wondering, do people here read a couple of books simultaneously or do you wait until you've finished one before picking up another.
I have always read one at a time but am tempted now to go for two
Gareth, this could be a super interesting thread to make, if you'd like to. I think it would spark some really cool discussions!
This is a great question, Gareth! Why do t you go ahead and start your own thread in the Book Chat folder? I'll bet you get some interesting discussion.
No. Sorry, but Personal challenges are your own thing. However, you're welcome to take an idea and turn it into a mini-challenge for the group.
The Group Wide Points is a fun way to encourage members to join group activities and interact.

Okay. There WAS a question in there about Personal Challenges and the Group-Wide Point System. I'm not crazy. Gaslighted, again!

Hi LuAnn,
Do you mean the group or the reading challenge?
All the goodreads blog widgets can be found in: Click on your profile up in the right corner > Edit profile > widgets. Then there will be boxes with the codes in for you.

Hi B,
If you want to just talk about a book, we've got the 'Specific Book/Author Discussion' folder where you can make threads about a specific book.
If you are looking to do a buddy-read (essentially, an organised, un-official group read where a set of people read it at the same time), you can post in this thread to see if anyone is interested in doing a buddy-read of the book.
And if it fits in with any of our monthly challenges, found here, you can post in the respective threads.
Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. :)

The overall 2015 reading challenge correctly shows 3 books read in 2015, but if I go to "my books" stats, I can only see 2 as the number of books even if it correctly shows 3 icons when I select "details". I did some digging and found some old Goodreads threads dealing with the same issue and they suggest waiting for 24 hours as there may be a delay in the update, I have finished my latest book yesterday, but it still isn't showing.
Is one of the moderators also a Site admin, it appears that it is a known issue on Goodreads and it needs a "refresh of my shelf count" to fix it? see here

Not I.
And it's not a problem I've come across in my GR travels so I can't even stitch together any advice. Sorry, Kiwi. :(

It looks to me like you're not setting your "date read" dates. They only appear on the overall challenge widget if you give them the date you finished reading it.

I have now suspended the add of completed books, the last one was more than 23 hours ago, it's now a matter of waiting 1 more hour to see if the problem get resolved by the 24 hours delay.

I am spending too much time trying to navigate the group and not enough time reading or doing anything else. I'm sure it suits other people but I find it way too confusing. how do I leave the group?
On the Homepage. At the top, it will say "edit" beneath the group description, next to "You are a member of this group."

Does anyone know why I can only have two widgets? Two went through and are updating nicely, but my genre widget won't play along. I've tried renaming. I've tried creating a whole new shelf and moving the books over. Any other suggestions?

Look to see if it moved off the screen. I have three, but only two show up on the main group page.

As Becca said, under the challenges header (in grey background) only 2 challenges are visible on the group page, but the remaining shows up by selecting "More challenges ..." link. I do not know of a way to make them all show up or even reorder them.
If the count is wrong, I've noticed that after marking a book as read and ticking the box for the appropriate challenge shelf the counter takes some time to catch up, but if you are able to follow the link to show the books in your challenge it will update immediately. Hope it helps Renee :)
It hasn't actually counted any of the books I've checked as "Renee's 2015 Genre Challenge" since January. I've tried to create new shelves with slightly different names related to its being a genre shelf but so far nothing is working. Oh, and I'm creating the shelf via the link on our homepage. Which is how I set up the other two (world and nonfiction).

Have you tried creating the shelf first and then setting up the challenge by assigning the shelf to challenge
Alternatively try the opposite, set up the challenge assigning a new shelf name and see if it automatically creates the shelf for you
then go through your global GR 2015 Reading Challenge list and tick the books from there and see if it updates?
These are the only things I can think of. I have created the challenges and their shelves at the beginning of the year and I can't remember exactly how I did it...
How frustrating Renee :(
Thanks, Kiwi. I think I tried those things but I'll give them all another go. Perhaps it's a small thing I missed as you say. :)

It actually seems as if it could fit into any of the three challenges for the month of November, but I already have a volume of essays in mind for the Non-Fiction Challenge.
Hi Aprilleigh!
We're not overly specific with how we attribute books to our challenges. It's more about how you'd like to fit it into them. We're not going to come round and tell you a book isnt allowed, and demand you change!
That book, along with sounding fascinating, would be fine for the World Lit month. But as I said, fit the books how you'd like to, its wholly up to you.
