Good one! The Magic Treehouse series is terrific! Also the Magic Treehouse Research Guides that go along with it. Very popular with 2,3,4,5 graders. I can't keep them on the shelves.

message 102: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber Like I said, classics such as Anne of Green Gables or even the HP books, the parents already are familiar with because they're very well-read people. :) This is why it's hard. I could get them a Little House book, but the values contained within aren't what they're looking for. I realize my sisters have pretty specific tastes and clauses, so maybe we could just open another thread for general Christmas presents suggestions, instead.

Also, I know that The Neverending Story can be enjoyed without the Auryn, but as it is a present from me to them, I want the book to have it.

message 103: by Miss (new)

Miss | 17 comments Aitziber -- Ophelia & The Marvellous Boy is an excellent book for 6-10 year olds. Ruby Lu, Brave & True is a great series. The Tale of Despereaux is fun. The Borrowers series. The original Heidi or the What Katy Did books for classics. Chronicles of Narnia, though religious, can be read as simply magical tales.

I just became an Aunty & cannot wait to share books with my niece! Have fun shopping for titles :)

Me, I recommend The Wombles to absolutely everybody of every age, but especially 8-ish-year-olds. Of course, hardly anybody listens... :P

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
I'm definitely adding The Wombles to my tbr! I just love the name!

Also, Mrs. Mike was a wonderful book I read in that age range. It was based on a true life story. And I just discovered was continued in a series of "Mrs. Mike" books.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret was lovely and combines the graphic novel element nicely.

message 106: by Miss (new)

Miss | 17 comments I didn't know Mrs. Mike was a series! I'll check that out.

Aitziber Sandy wrote: "This is leaving a lot of research to you, unfortunately, but hopefully I'm pointing you in the right direction. :-) "

Sandy, this actually helps a lot. I'd been thinking of looking at children's lit award winners as the quality is likely to be better. It's tricky because while a synopsis is written to make a book marketable, sometimes what marketing people think it's marketable may sound unappealing. :P It'd be easier if I'd actually read these books. So yes, research is in order.

Prepping for 2015 and wondering if the Genre Challenge will be running again in 2015? I joined the group too late to do it this year, but it looks like fun if it's going again next year :)

Yes! The genres will be slightly different, just to mix things up a little, but it's kind of our signature challenge, so it'll be back. :)

Great, I'll make a spot for it in my personal challenge area :)

message 111: by [deleted user] (new)

Question for the mods-are members allowed to start threads in the 'Book Chat' section, or is that a mod only thing? I thought it would be fun to start a thread, asking what people's top reads of 2014 were, but I didn't want to start a thread if I wasn't supposed to :) I'd love to hear what books people loved this year-my TBR list could use a few new additions :D

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Of course members are allowed to make threads, in generally any section! We try to encourage it, but we often don't see many people making them. We'd love for people to make more! :)

Go right ahead and make it. It's an excellent idea, and could spark some really interesting discussions!

Great, I'll start one now :)

Gareth | 166 comments (If this would be better in another threat let me know I couldn't find one so went for this one).

I was wondering, do people here read a couple of books simultaneously or do you wait until you've finished one before picking up another.

I have always read one at a time but am tempted now to go for two

Gareth, this could be a super interesting thread to make, if you'd like to. I think it would spark some really cool discussions!

message 116: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
This is a great question, Gareth! Why do t you go ahead and start your own thread in the Book Chat folder? I'll bet you get some interesting discussion.

message 117: by Gareth (new)

Gareth | 166 comments Yeah I'll do that

Holly and I think alike! Again!

message 119: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
No. Sorry, but Personal challenges are your own thing. However, you're welcome to take an idea and turn it into a mini-challenge for the group.
The Group Wide Points is a fun way to encourage members to join group activities and interact.

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Okay. There WAS a question in there about Personal Challenges and the Group-Wide Point System. I'm not crazy. Gaslighted, again!

message 121: by LuAnn (new)

LuAnn (luannbraley) | 25 comments Last year, I had a widget on my blog for this challenge, and I would like to have one again this year, but can't find the code for it on GR. Don't know if I'm just unobservant or ... ?

message 122: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
I'm gonna have to leave that one to Holly. She's got all the widget magic.

message 123: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Hi LuAnn,

Do you mean the group or the reading challenge?

All the goodreads blog widgets can be found in: Click on your profile up in the right corner > Edit profile > widgets. Then there will be boxes with the codes in for you.

message 124: by Brandilyn (new)

Brandilyn | 11 comments Being new to any form of online reading groups, what is the best way to find other readers in the group to discuss particular books with? I am hoping that is one of the things that can be done through this group. It appears that this group is for any reading genre, which is perfect for those of us who cross into different genres.

Hi B,

If you want to just talk about a book, we've got the 'Specific Book/Author Discussion' folder where you can make threads about a specific book.

If you are looking to do a buddy-read (essentially, an organised, un-official group read where a set of people read it at the same time), you can post in this thread to see if anyone is interested in doing a buddy-read of the book.

And if it fits in with any of our monthly challenges, found here, you can post in the respective threads.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. :)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments I'm not sure it's a group problem, but I noticed that "my books" stats page is not updating.

The overall 2015 reading challenge correctly shows 3 books read in 2015, but if I go to "my books" stats, I can only see 2 as the number of books even if it correctly shows 3 icons when I select "details". I did some digging and found some old Goodreads threads dealing with the same issue and they suggest waiting for 24 hours as there may be a delay in the update, I have finished my latest book yesterday, but it still isn't showing.

Is one of the moderators also a Site admin, it appears that it is a known issue on Goodreads and it needs a "refresh of my shelf count" to fix it? see here

message 129: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Hi Kiwi - I'm not a site admin but I do know one of the other mods aren't admins either. Holly, Faye, Renee...are any of you Admins?

And it's not a problem I've come across in my GR travels so I can't even stitch together any advice. Sorry, Kiwi. :(

It looks to me like you're not setting your "date read" dates. They only appear on the overall challenge widget if you give them the date you finished reading it.

message 133: by Overbooked ✎ (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments Hi Faye, no the finished date is not the problem. For my books I put them into "currently" reading state first, and then keep the number of pages/progress updated along the way. The book statistic shows all of the reading progress dates and at the end it shows 01/07 "marked as read". For me the overall challenge widget is updated instantly, it is the book stats page that is not up-to-date.

I have now suspended the add of completed books, the last one was more than 23 hours ago, it's now a matter of waiting 1 more hour to see if the problem get resolved by the 24 hours delay.

message 134: by Overbooked ✎ (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments update: seems that the count updated just now. Almost 24 hours later.

I am spending too much time trying to navigate the group and not enough time reading or doing anything else. I'm sure it suits other people but I find it way too confusing. how do I leave the group?

message 136: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

On the Homepage. At the top, it will say "edit" beneath the group description, next to "You are a member of this group."

Does anyone know why I can only have two widgets? Two went through and are updating nicely, but my genre widget won't play along. I've tried renaming. I've tried creating a whole new shelf and moving the books over. Any other suggestions?

Look to see if it moved off the screen. I have three, but only two show up on the main group page.

message 143: by Overbooked ✎ (last edited Jun 07, 2015 04:52PM) (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments When you say "won't play along" do you mean the books are not included in the challenge and the count is wrong? or simply you can't see the challenge on the main page?

As Becca said, under the challenges header (in grey background) only 2 challenges are visible on the group page, but the remaining shows up by selecting "More challenges ..." link. I do not know of a way to make them all show up or even reorder them.

If the count is wrong, I've noticed that after marking a book as read and ticking the box for the appropriate challenge shelf the counter takes some time to catch up, but if you are able to follow the link to show the books in your challenge it will update immediately. Hope it helps Renee :)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
It hasn't actually counted any of the books I've checked as "Renee's 2015 Genre Challenge" since January. I've tried to create new shelves with slightly different names related to its being a genre shelf but so far nothing is working. Oh, and I'm creating the shelf via the link on our homepage. Which is how I set up the other two (world and nonfiction).

message 145: by Overbooked ✎ (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments I guess you have double checked the spelling (I have made this silly mistake myself :).

Have you tried creating the shelf first and then setting up the challenge by assigning the shelf to challenge

Alternatively try the opposite, set up the challenge assigning a new shelf name and see if it automatically creates the shelf for you

then go through your global GR 2015 Reading Challenge list and tick the books from there and see if it updates?

These are the only things I can think of. I have created the challenges and their shelves at the beginning of the year and I can't remember exactly how I did it...

How frustrating Renee :(

message 146: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Thanks, Kiwi. I think I tried those things but I'll give them all another go. Perhaps it's a small thing I missed as you say. :)

message 147: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) Quick question, would Blood and Guts: Dispatches from the Whale Wars, a nonfiction book dealing with Japanese whaling in and near Australia, be an appropriate title for the World Literature Challenge for the month of November? Biggest reason I ask is because it's non-fiction and I generally think of literature as works of fiction (or at least mythology).

It actually seems as if it could fit into any of the three challenges for the month of November, but I already have a volume of essays in mind for the Non-Fiction Challenge.

message 148: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Hi Aprilleigh!

We're not overly specific with how we attribute books to our challenges. It's more about how you'd like to fit it into them. We're not going to come round and tell you a book isnt allowed, and demand you change!

That book, along with sounding fascinating, would be fine for the World Lit month. But as I said, fit the books how you'd like to, its wholly up to you.

message 149: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) Sounds good to me, thanks!

message 150: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 198 comments Hi! I'm having the same difficulty as Renee. My World-Lit and Non-Fiction challenges tally fine each time I add a book to the shelf but the Genre challenge won't tally any book I add to the shelf. Very strange. I've read a Science Fiction book this month, have put it in the genre shelf but it will not record it - even after waiting many days. Any suggestions?
