The Reading Challenge Group discussion

Any Questions?

Just thought I would put it out there ☺

That said, it's not a bad suggestion. We've had less nominations this month, I've noticed.

I know, it used to be that we'd get a flood of nominations in just a few hours, so I got into a habit of closing them soon after opening them, but now I leave them open for 24 hours and only get a handful of responses. I'll try leaving them open for 2 days next time.

thanks just saw. had to write you back as it wouldn't let me remove you as moderator because you created the group so you'll have to remove yourself as moderator.

I just finished a book on the Kindle app on my iPad. I went to the Goodreads app and marked it read but it's not being added to my challenge. Any idea how I fix that?

Hi, Ben. You have to make sure the date read is set for the date you finished. From the app... Click on the book. Then click on Review. A blank screen will show up for your review, but if you look in the upper right corner, you'll see the word more. Click on that then set your date.
I a always make sure I list a book as 'currently reading' before I mark it finished or completed with the progress icon. Then it automatically sets the date and adds it to my list. Also, if you're using the wiki for this group, you need to make sure you've set up a 'shelf' that you'll have to check for it to show up here and not just on the GR meter.
Hope that helps. If not, ask again.

Forgive me for maybe ask a question allready asked thousands of times, but I'm new here, I don't speack english as fluently as I would want and I have trouble undestranding the making of this club, so :
- How can I know which books I have to read on september ?
- What can I do to help choosing the next books ?
Thank you so much for your attention.

Pour choisir les livres d'octobre, attends le 16 septembre pour l'ouverture des nominations, qui seront postees dans la section "group reads - nominations".
J'espere que ca repond a ta queation, n'hesite pas si tu as d'autres questions ☺
Hi Violaine! Your questions are exactly why this thread is here, so hopefully we can clear things up for you.
Our group reads for September appear at the top of the group, in the Currently Reading section. Currently, there's To Kill a Mockingbird, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Eleanor & Park and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West. They're not required reading, you can choose whether you wish to take part.
If you scroll down to the 'Group Reads' section, you'll see our discussion threads for them, where we talk about them throughout the month.
If you scroll down a bit further, you'll see a section for 'Group Read Nominations', these are set up roughly half way through the month, where you can nominate a book to read for that particular group read. It then goes to a poll, where generally a larger amount of members vote for the one they want to read most. We generally send out a group message around that time in order to highlight the threads or polls, so keep an eye out!
I hope this answers your questions, and isn't so confusing. The Helpful Hints on How To Use This Group gives a big overview of the group, which may help you a bit.
Feel free to ask any more questions if you're still confused, or have a completely different issue. We'll be happy to help!
And welcome to the group.

It's a lot clearer now ! I'm fully enjoying this group which keeps me motivating to read, read, read !
Thanks to the both of you.

I didn't know about it until recently. If you click on "Discussions", you'll also be able to see all the sections of the forum, as the main page of the group doesn't show it all.

Roseanne, the link generally directs me to the main Goodreads page (desktop, not mobile), in my phones browser.
Honestly, I have no idea how to include a link to the polls. I do everything from my phone, so while I promise to look into it, I can't promise there will be a link next time. I've never voted via link. I always go in through my browser and pull up the site as if I were on a computer. That allows me to do the things I can't do from the app.
Okay. I have a Question/Confession. I suspect I've been doing my Genre Challenge wiki wrong. I've been adding anything that fits the BIG FOUR Genre Reads. So ANYTIME I read a classic, I mark it as "Read" and as "Genre Challenge."
Is that wrong?
(Not philosophically, but according to initial expectations.)

Well, I understood the genre challenge to be that you have read a book from that month's chosen genre. So any Crime/Mystery book I read in August for example, would go on the genre challenge shelf.

They're in the 8-12 range. Recently published stuff is more of a sure bet, as it is more likely to display the values their parents want to instil in them. They value diversity, feminism and aren't too hot on religious themes.
I'm good with classics, but their parents are both bookworms. They're likely familiar with them, and have already chosen and/or discarded. Any Canadian children's lit? :D? There's a higher chance of turning up a hidden gem there.

The thing is, it's really important that the Auryn is on the cover, because the main character is reading a book that also has the Auryn. It's part of the reading experience that kids go, "MY book ALSO has the Auryn!"
And yet, the paperback version features various characters, and not the snakes. :( There's a leatherbound edition going for 200 dollars, hahahaha . . . :(
The Neverending Story is a great choice. (With our without the auryn) My hardcover did not have one, but I still loved it.
The American Girls books are charming historical fiction. (The Little House series and Anne of Green Gables are older but wonderful.)
The Harry Potter books, of course. (Hermione is fabulous.)
Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle In Time was a personal favorite of mine from those years.
Holes by Louis Sachar does not have a heroine, but it was a really fun read.
I'll be back with others as I think of them.
