Karen | 289 comments Ohhhh it was Kiwi.... Small mental glitch there!

Thanks very much Sandy :)

message 52: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) I was wondering if it would be possible to leave the nomination threads open for at least a couple of days next time? Or maybe let people know in a message that the nominations are open. I literally checked every day to see if these topics were up and during the course of a day I actually missed them! It's probably because I'm not in the same time zone, living in Europe.
Just thought I would put it out there ☺

message 53: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber They go up on the 16th, as far as I can tell. I'm in Europe too, and I usually have time to sneak in my noms. :)

That said, it's not a bad suggestion. We've had less nominations this month, I've noticed.

message 54: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 85 comments I'm in the UK and generally miss them too.

message 55: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments I thought it stayed up until we got a certain number of nominations. I guess I never thought about how we are all in different time zones and some people may not see it in time. I always see it but I am in New York.

I know, it used to be that we'd get a flood of nominations in just a few hours, so I got into a habit of closing them soon after opening them, but now I leave them open for 24 hours and only get a handful of responses. I'll try leaving them open for 2 days next time.

thanks just saw. had to write you back as it wouldn't let me remove you as moderator because you created the group so you'll have to remove yourself as moderator.

message 59: by Ben (new)

Ben Hi,

I just finished a book on the Kindle app on my iPad. I went to the Goodreads app and marked it read but it's not being added to my challenge. Any idea how I fix that?

message 60: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Hi Ben. Make sure that the book is marked with the date that you finished it and that you add it to the bookshelf where you want it to show up. This doesn't always work for me on the mobile app so if you're also using the mobile app, try logging into the website to manually adjust there. Hope that helps!

message 61: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Hi, Ben. You have to make sure the date read is set for the date you finished. From the app... Click on the book. Then click on Review. A blank screen will show up for your review, but if you look in the upper right corner, you'll see the word more. Click on that then set your date.

I a always make sure I list a book as 'currently reading' before I mark it finished or completed with the progress icon. Then it automatically sets the date and adds it to my list. Also, if you're using the wiki for this group, you need to make sure you've set up a 'shelf' that you'll have to check for it to show up here and not just on the GR meter.

Hope that helps. If not, ask again.

message 62: by Ben (new)

Ben Ok, thanks. You lost me at the wiki part. I went to the website and got the date added. That added it to my challenge. I'll try the app method as well. Seems like this stuff should just work esp. Since Amazon owns GR!

message 63: by Pikobooks (new)

Pikobooks Hello everybody.
Forgive me for maybe ask a question allready asked thousands of times, but I'm new here, I don't speack english as fluently as I would want and I have trouble undestranding the making of this club, so :

- How can I know which books I have to read on september ?
- What can I do to help choosing the next books ?

Thank you so much for your attention.

message 64: by Camille (new)

message 65: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Hi Violaine! Your questions are exactly why this thread is here, so hopefully we can clear things up for you.

Our group reads for September appear at the top of the group, in the Currently Reading section. Currently, there's To Kill a Mockingbird, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Eleanor & Park and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West. They're not required reading, you can choose whether you wish to take part.

If you scroll down to the 'Group Reads' section, you'll see our discussion threads for them, where we talk about them throughout the month.

If you scroll down a bit further, you'll see a section for 'Group Read Nominations', these are set up roughly half way through the month, where you can nominate a book to read for that particular group read. It then goes to a poll, where generally a larger amount of members vote for the one they want to read most. We generally send out a group message around that time in order to highlight the threads or polls, so keep an eye out!

I hope this answers your questions, and isn't so confusing. The Helpful Hints on How To Use This Group gives a big overview of the group, which may help you a bit.

Feel free to ask any more questions if you're still confused, or have a completely different issue. We'll be happy to help!

And welcome to the group.

Camille, you've just made it a whole lot easier. Thank you!

message 67: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) That's what I tried to explain, but you said it better, Holly!

message 68: by Pikobooks (new)

Pikobooks Dear Camille and Holly, thank you so much for your answers !
It's a lot clearer now ! I'm fully enjoying this group which keeps me motivating to read, read, read !

Thanks to the both of you.

message 69: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) No problem ☺

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments So how do you pronounce the author's name, John le Carré?

message 71: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
That's the way I've heard it pronounced.

message 72: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 85 comments Have I missed nominations or are they not up yet?

message 73: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Hi Lauren, they'll be up in a minute!

message 74: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) when are the October polls going up? just curious.

message 75: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Thanks, now I know. :D

message 76: by Miss (new)

Miss | 17 comments I can't seem to find the polls for October - only the nomination lists.
Where should I be looking?

message 77: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) In the section on the right of the screen, you'll have polls amongst other things.

message 78: by Miss (new)

Miss | 17 comments Thank you!!

message 79: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) You're welcome :)
I didn't know about it until recently. If you click on "Discussions", you'll also be able to see all the sections of the forum, as the main page of the group doesn't show it all.

message 80: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 85 comments Would it be possible to keep getting links to the polls in messages about them? Or does anybody know how to get to polls from the app? Thanks :)

message 81: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber Lauren, I'm pretty sure that was just this month, since it was Kassandra and Renee's first time handling that stuff. :)

message 82: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments I have the app on my kindle fire and I am pretty sure I cant get to the polls anyway from the app. I ususally wait until I am back on a computer.

message 83: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber The polls will open on the app as long as there's a direct link to them, that's why the messages about the polls need include the links.

message 84: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Hi all, sorry about the link to the polls...call it a beginner's oversight. I will include the link next time!

message 85: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments even with the link I still cant vote on the app. It lets me see it but doesn't let me vote. The android app hasn't gotten the updates that the iphone got. I just assumed that was why I couldn't.

message 86: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Roseanne, the link generally directs me to the main Goodreads page (desktop, not mobile), in my phones browser.

message 87: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments It always freezes when I click on a link in the app. not sure why.

message 88: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Honestly, I have no idea how to include a link to the polls. I do everything from my phone, so while I promise to look into it, I can't promise there will be a link next time. I've never voted via link. I always go in through my browser and pull up the site as if I were on a computer. That allows me to do the things I can't do from the app.

message 89: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Okay. I have a Question/Confession. I suspect I've been doing my Genre Challenge wiki wrong. I've been adding anything that fits the BIG FOUR Genre Reads. So ANYTIME I read a classic, I mark it as "Read" and as "Genre Challenge."

Is that wrong?
(Not philosophically, but according to initial expectations.)

message 90: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 85 comments I usually open the links through the messages on the app, it lets me vote like that as long as there's a link there. Thank you!

message 91: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Renee - I don't think you're wrong. I think there was an expectation that there was some wiggle room on interoperation, but that could just be me. Personally, I mark the books that I read for that month's genre challenge as part of the challenge, but I interpret that to also mean any books that I started to read in the appropriate month and finished at a later date.

message 92: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments my understanding was that there was wiggle room too and I have counted books that I either started or ended in the appropriate month. Some books take longer than a month to read. As far as the big four (love calling it that) they aren't big on my tbr list so I haven't thought about what to do with them.

Karen | 289 comments Renee wrote: "Okay. I have a Question/Confession. I suspect I've been doing my Genre Challenge wiki wrong. I've been adding anything that fits the BIG FOUR Genre Reads. So ANYTIME I read a classic, I mark it as ..."

Well, I understood the genre challenge to be that you have read a book from that month's chosen genre. So any Crime/Mystery book I read in August for example, would go on the genre challenge shelf.

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Sandy, they'll be up in the next few hours! :)

message 95: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber I think it could be a mini-challenge! But I'm especially attuned to children's books at the moment, because I'm thinking of getting my little sisters some books for Christmas. :D It's proving a little tricky, because all my favorites are German or Swedish.

message 96: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber Sandy wrote: "Aitziber, if you could mention the ages of the girls, I might be able to recommend some books. My daughter is 28 now, but some children's books are classics and would still make wonderful gifts. Of..."

They're in the 8-12 range. Recently published stuff is more of a sure bet, as it is more likely to display the values their parents want to instil in them. They value diversity, feminism and aren't too hot on religious themes.

I'm good with classics, but their parents are both bookworms. They're likely familiar with them, and have already chosen and/or discarded. Any Canadian children's lit? :D? There's a higher chance of turning up a hidden gem there.

message 97: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber Thank you! I would also love to get them The Neverending Story, which is a HUGE favorite of mine. The problem is that the version I can find on Amazon doesn't have the Auryn on the cover. The Auryn is the symbol of two snakes interwined, biting each other's tail.

The thing is, it's really important that the Auryn is on the cover, because the main character is reading a book that also has the Auryn. It's part of the reading experience that kids go, "MY book ALSO has the Auryn!"

And yet, the paperback version features various characters, and not the snakes. :( There's a leatherbound edition going for 200 dollars, hahahaha . . . :(

The Neverending Story is a great choice. (With our without the auryn) My hardcover did not have one, but I still loved it.
The American Girls books are charming historical fiction. (The Little House series and Anne of Green Gables are older but wonderful.)
The Harry Potter books, of course. (Hermione is fabulous.)
Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle In Time was a personal favorite of mine from those years.
Holes by Louis Sachar does not have a heroine, but it was a really fun read.

I'll be back with others as I think of them.

message 99: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber I've never read A Wrinkle in Time, but Camilla, by the same writer, was major for me. It was the first book that outright said that parents were people before becoming parents. I think they're a bit young for that one though.

message 100: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments Mine is 8 and she is loving the Oz books and she also likes the Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne
