I know, I know, mind reading is just a fantasy, right? Well what if the government found out how to do it?

It's not impossible and i think we're not far from discovering it. The government and even the private researchers are probably working their ass off for this discovery. All positive and negative outcome are just golden but all in all negative weigh more than the positive.
Would it be right?Yes and No. It really depends on what you're trying to achieve or the purpose of why you're doing the mind reading thing. Anyway, the rightness of a certain action can only be determined if it produced something true/honest/good/etc (in my opinion).
Well what if the government found out how to do it?
We're doomed (exaggeration, or maybe not). Haha unless everybody in the government is suddenly honest/ really aiming to beat the bad guys.
In my opinion, it would inevitably be used for spying or surveillance, and it would be the worst invasion of privacy. Our own thoughts are the most private things we have in the world. Even without the government using it against the citizens, people should be able to keep things like their orientation/religious beliefs/political views to themselves if they want. As they say, good fences make good neighbors.
I mean, do you as a thirty year old want your boss and coworkers to know that really embarrassing thing you did in third grade?
If we ever could mind-read, I think we should do it to people that cannot speak/express themselves. This could help them have a say if they directed their thoughts to it.
What if this were only used in criminal justice, as a reliable lie detector? People who are innocent wouldn't be convicted, and those who are guilty wouldn't walk free.
That would sure be helpful. BUT, there's always going to be that person to ruin it for everybody that would abuse the ability to read minds and I feel like things would go awry. And with the ability to use DNA samples and the like in court in place already, it's not like we're making blind decisions now anyway.

I think it would probably be restricted to organizations like the CIA or FBI because if every government official had this power (or even just a few of the feds) it would be a huge invasion of privacy. I did a paper on security after 9/11 once and there are tons of people who thought the the fed was taking advantage of a terrorist attack to spy on random civilians.
I'd hope the government would not do anything with this power if they discovered a way to do it. Sort of like time travel; I can just imagine people taking advantage of it and messing everything up.

I don't want my mind to be read. that's HUGE invasiom of privacy. I know the government wants to know everything but at least let us have the privacy of our thoughts
i agree totally. The government should not look into our thoughts. My head is a dark DARK place. Id be put in an institution if people knew what i thought. Hell people would probably look at me like i was a 40 year old. And i hate being stared at more than anything
I think privacy is a good thing, and if mind reading happened it wouldn't be morally right. Freedom of thought is a human right, as well as privacy. I mean, your thoughts are not for anybody but yourself to know.
If we do have our minds read it will be a huge invasion of privacy my inner thoughts are dark to say the least. It will ruin my friendship and leave me alone so i do not agree with it!
Even though mind reading COULD be used for good things, there would be many many people using it for bad. I say definitely no.
I'd say, since thoughts are supposed to be private, and reading something from someone else that is supposed to be private is wrong, reading one's mind without permission from them would be wrong as well.
