I found The Da Vinci Code an intriguing read. It was interesting the way Dan Brown went into symbolism, history etc. Besides it was a good adventure. I gave it four stars.
Just saw that someone said that those who don't like this book are of a single mind, and then went on to talk about the religious aspect of the book. Could care less about the church, religion, etc. My single-mindedness is that I prefer to read books that are written by GOOD writers. Alas, this did not live up to my one stipulation.
I read this for a book club years ago right when it started being the book everyone seemed to be reading. Midway through, I asked another member if I was the only one who wasn't finding it as absorbing and wonderful as it had been lauded, and she replied dryly, "Oh, I can put it down."
I don't think it can be denied that, even if you found the subject matter interesting, the writing was really awful! Those chapter endings were so sophomoric: Something powerful is going to happen! IN THE NEXT CHAPTER!!!! I should have known how bad it was when I heard/read more than one person proudly claim that this was their favorite book...and they NEVER read books!
The only good thing I can think to say about it and its popularity is that some of its fans might have been prompted to go visit a museum or delve into art and art history.

Because his writing is embarrassingly bad and half the time doesn't know what the hell he's talking about?

This is a topic and a modern issue that you need to keep and OPEN mind.
So the people who trash this are of one single mind.
(You can't go against the church)
But times are changing and you cannot control people's writing or thoughts.
Just enjoy, and leave your personal pre-conceptions out of it.

I try NOT to think about it! I try NOT to reflect on how some clown used a family-connection to sneak into publishing! I try not to dwell on how some schmoe sent the competency standard in mass paperbacks, back to the level of Rex Reed or Sidney Sheldon! I try not to fathom why so many imbeciles bothered to purchase this preposterous bit of cockamamie flim--flam! I try not to reckon up just how many credulous simpletons walk the streets of the modern world, as is implied by how many copies this bozo must have sold! I try not to think about the silliness of Popes leaping from the rungs of helicopters wearing parachutes! Please!

LOL the parachute scene! I remember tossing the book in the garbage can, then remembering that it wasn't mine, rescuing it and cleaning it up to retur
