When someone turns 17 they get their blood taken, tested and put into a database, whether they want it or not. The computer looks for a gene called the Crew Gene, and it tells who there Destined is. But, they can choose to see who their mate is or not. Most people do, wanting to know who their Destined is, avoiding all the heart break they might have had to go through.
When you go into the clinic, you are handed a lot of paper work to fill out, to ensure the acuracy of the test, and then you are called back to see Dr.Jacklin Craw. She draws a good amount of your blood from a largish needle, and so it will hurt a bit. This test can be taken any age over 16, but you will only get your results at 17. No one knows the inner workings of the test besides Dr. Craw, and the other doctors at the clinic are only authorized to take and store the blood for testing.
The city is modernized, forests are rare. Here we are, in the founding city of the new era, Amourvia. Everything is very similar to the way things were in the past years (like in the early 2000's...hint hint), only people generally seem... happier. Crime rates are lower, and the economy is finally balancing out...not saying it's perfect, but it's... good enough.
Jacklin Craw is Dr. Craw's great-something-granddaughter. She is basically a mega star, and is one of the only people able and allowed to test for the crew gene. It takes eight years of specialized schooling to have the skills needed to be a Craw doctor, and than Jacklin and the clinic owner has to accept you into the clinic.
