Lea Ann (buntingla) How many have you read? Books to movies this year.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/ariellecalder...

I've read Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, Gone Girl, The Giver. Gillian Flynn has two books adapted to movies this year? Big year! I am super excited to see Strayed. Loved that book. Less excited about The Giver because I'm not sure a film could do justice to that book.

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) I've read three: The Fault in Our Stars, Gone Girl, and Labor Day. I've got Dark Places and Serena, but haven't read them yet.

Lea Ann (buntingla) Labor Day looks good.

Lea Ann (buntingla) I think I might teach The Giver to my reading class this month so they will have read the book before the movie comes out.

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) I've never read it. I really think I should.

Gidget (gferguson) | 5 comments Hi everyone! I just joined the group and wanted to say hello. To be on topic, I have read several books that are going to film this year (Vampire Academy, A Long Way Down, Divergent, and both of Gillian Flynn's books Gone Girl and Dark Places.) I'm a bit worried about Vampire Academy but still hopeful. It looks like the tone of the movie will be much different than the book. I wish A Long Way Down was being released here in the states. I'm very excited for both Divergent and Gone Girl! Both movies have strong source material to work with so it would be a shame if either turned out poorly.

Lea Ann (buntingla) Welcome, Gidget! Glad to have you join our little group! There are a few of us here that are interested to see how Gone Girl's film adaptation is going to turn out.

Lea Ann (buntingla) I ran across Teddy Roosevelt's Ten Rules for Reading the other day. I didn't know people needed rules for reading, and most of these seem a bit redundant, but reading this was an interesting way to spend two minutes.

Lea Ann (buntingla) Has anyone read any of the Torie O'Shae Mysteries? Just wondering.

message 10: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) Okay, I've been snowed in at my house all week. I'm a teacher and I love a good snow day, but we've had WAY too many this year, and I'm climbing the walls (and constantly posting on Goodreads).

I was reading pretty steadily but I've hit a wall with all the books I've started. Hoping to get to the library tomorrow so I can get started on our February challenge.

message 11: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) Well, I've enjoyed the Daniel Woodrell books I've been reading for the Feb. read. I also enjoyed the Jonis Agee book we read last month, but I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. lol

We have several listed on our bookshelf and you can search for Missouri on Goodreads and get a huge list of book ideas.

Lea Ann (buntingla) How is everyone's weekend gone? I have had such a busy week at school that I haven't hardly touched a book at home. I did finish reading The Giver with my reading class. It's about the fifth time through for me, so I don't really count it anymore. I was really happy to see my students enjoying the novel as much as I do.

The week coming up for me is going to be filled with a data team meeting (ick), two school basketball games, and late nights at school waiting for my own three kids to finish basketball and band practice. Hoping to find time to finish at least one of the books I have going.

Everyone have a wonderful week!

Lea Ann (buntingla) Is it snowing or sleeting where you are?

message 14: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) This has nothing to do with anything, but I thought it was interesting. Find adult books based on childhood favorites.

Lea Ann (buntingla) Ugh! I'm so sick of seeing snow.

message 16: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) Agreed!

message 17: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) Well, March and April seemed to have slipped by for me without much reading. While prepping for testing at school and keeping up with my own kids' activities I seemed to have slipped in to a black hole! My school year doesn't end until May 23, I think, but things are starting to slow down a little for me, so back to the books!

message 18: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Mine doesn't. The librarian and I had talked about getting one going at the one I go to but were unable to get it started at the time because of our time restraints at the time. I should talk to her about it again.

I would like to try a bookclub sometime in person rather than just online.

Lea Ann (buntingla) I just finished this book, See the Ozarks: The Touristic Image, and the author's description of an "Ozarker" has stuck with me and has been rolling around in my head.

"Today's native Ozarker is a singularly self-reliant and patriotic American, but suspicious of big government's promises. This profoundly Jeffersonian rurality is part and parcel of the Ozarks' touristic reputation."

I think they may have nailed it. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Lea Ann (buntingla) I know at one point there were a few teachers connected to this group, so I wanted to mention that I just got back from the Missouri Holocaust Education Institute. This was a conference sponsored by the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center in St. Louis. This was the first year for the conference, and I was blown away! We had four, very intense, thirteen-hour days filled with Holocaust education and pedagogy. We also toured the Holocaust Museum, met and learned from a Holocaust survivor, and enjoyed an author visit. I learned sooo much!

Any teachers in Missouri who teach this content need to look out for this conference next year! $150 covered the cost of the conference, lodging and meals (and a ton of freebies). We stayed at the University of Missouri in Columbia and traveled to the Holocaust Museum in St. Louis by bus on our second day. http://hmlc.org/

I've had a lifelong interest in the Holocaust and considered myself fairly knowledgeable about the topic, but I quickly learned there was so much I didn't know about this catastrophic event. Such a worthwhile experience, and it has definitely changed the way I will teach this content.

Lea Ann (buntingla) Well, it's December which means I have time to read for the next couple of weeks (winter break). This group is terribly quiet. Not sure if any of you members are even still around, but if you are I'd love to hear from you!

message 22: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) Well, after much reflection, I've decided to try to find another moderator for this group. During the school year I just don't have the time or energy to keep the posts going. If anyone is interested, please let me know.

message 23: by Lea Ann (new)

Lea Ann (buntingla) Not a fast reader simply because I have limited time.
