Lauren Cecile | 12 comments Helen: Unfortunately "Skin" left our indie movie theater before I got a chance to see it. Really wanted to!! Thanks for reminding me of its existence.

Helen, Kisha, Anastasia, thanks for the welcome, and sorry it has taken me so long to check back in... I've been horribly busy, what with visiting my kids in two different countries, plus starting a new book, plus dealing with some other private stuff! I spent most of today, Sunday, reading the one-star reviews for The Help -- I've always been suspicious of white authors writing about slavery or its aftermath, and the discussions were so interesting I didn't even get down to opening my Kindle today!
I'm now off to see if you people have a Help discussion. I also discovered, and bought, two books on African American history which I can't wait to get my teeth into. I'll post about them on the relevant threads.
Hope to participate a bit more in future. Life has calmed down a bit!

James Aura (jamesaura) Some here might enjoy my historical fiction novel When Saigon Surrendered: A Kentucky Mystery which features a very strong, successful woman of color in 1975 Kentucky.
It's a mystery and a coming of age story.

message 63: by Irene (new)

Irene (reniemarie) | 1 comments Hello to all. This is my first post in this group so I hope this is the correct spot for it. I've never been active in many groups besides Underground Knowledge with James and Lance Morcan but this group looks interesting as well. Let's see I'm 35 and I work in my local community college's library and have been for the past seven years now. Books are a big part of my life today. Memoirs are my favorite but I'll read from any genre really. I want to experience it all and know everything life has to offer but I can't afford to travel or leave my Grandmother whom I provide home care for so instead I experience a lot via my reading. I can't wait to see what we will be reading in this group. Oh, I don't know who else does this but if I want to make absolutely certain I will read a book or I have it but haven't started it yet it's in my currently reading folder usually. I don't actually read 10-15 books at a time. Three is my limit. I have to REALLY love a book for me to only be reading the one though. There have only been a handful of page turners like that so far so I usually do have 2-3 going at once. Does anyone else do that with their currently reading list? Ugh I'm rambling here. Sorry gals and guys. I'm just very tired now. Time for bed. Ciao!

Toni Mariani (tonimariani) Hello Irene.
Welcome.
You are not alone; many people are in a similar circumstance.
Try my new memoir-type little book, and maybe read it to your grandma.

Donna Sawyer (donnadrewsawyer) | 14 comments One of the reasons I wrote my historical fiction book, Provenance, was to take readers like you to experience places like Paris between the wars; Villa I Tatti in Florence, Italy and New York during the Golden Age. I wanted to introduce them to people they might never have met and have readers become immersed in their story. I think, Provenance, may be the page turner you've been looking for.

Congratulations Donna. I love Italy, Florence certainly. (This is my first non-review Goodreads post so I'm still feeling my way.) Is it ok to ask if there is there any particular theme to Provenance?--like mystery, family drama, religious/spiritual issues, espionage? I'm fascinated by religious/spiritual issues so would like to know. Thanks, Loren Woodson

message 67: by Loren (new)

Loren Woodson | 7 comments Follow up comment: I posted the above congratulatory comment and question--but without having seen your fine summary elsewhere on GR. My bad: I should have done more research and gotten more of a sense of the book. I've got a lot of books I'm following but this looks like one more well worth reading. Again, congratulations and best wishes.

message 68: by Dana (new)

Dana Vacca (danavacca) | 24 comments I am fairly new to the group and have just published an historical fiction book: Freedom Calling: A Civil War Slave Escapes By Sea. It is inspired by actual Civil War history and events, has lots of adventure, and ROMANCE! Overall it's about perseverance, strong will, listening to your guardian angel and to your heart.
Hope you might consider it for August nominations!

Thanks!
Dana Vacca

Toni Mariani (tonimariani) Sounds good. (A side note, the scriptures state, "the heart is treacherous, who can know it!") We can't listen to our hearts.
