3. I was really fond of this chapter. I think a lesser writer may have stuck with the depressed section of Kaladin's arc a little longer to really ram it home, but Brandon knows we need our protagonists to be active and that he had already done enough to show how miserable things had gotten for him. He pushed Kaladin back into play in a really satisfying way here and I was cheering him on when he ran roughshod all over Gaz.
4. Total complete and voluntary service, by someone clearly more educated and worldly than almost anyone he meets. Interesting concept. I think it is very likely a choice (or duty), since the servitude part seems separate to his own personal honour which drives a lot of details to his behaviour. I look forward to seeing how Szeth gets put back in play, in the main narrative.
5. This question isn't quite phrased correctly. Jasnah is the daughter of the late King Gavilar. Dalinar is her uncle.
Also, I've really enjoyed Dalinar and his son's sections so far. I read on, breaking my own rules on when I was allowed to start new chapters and leaving myself somewhat under-prepared for a meeting at work, because chapter 13 was so much fun.

I too think Sanderson did a great job of showing how hopeless Kaladin felt. He got the point of it across and didn't feel the need to hammer his audience. Plus, I like seeing Gaz get a little karmic payback for being a jerk.
I'm hoping Book 2 has some family trees to show how everyone is related.
Chapters 7-13 are covered. Spoilers are having a party below!
1. Shallan's determination pays off, but Jasnah Kholin seems to change her mind a bit suddenly, and when Shallan isn't expecting her to. She mentions knowing of Shallan's family... Do you think perhaps she knows more than she admits? Or is she really just a bit more soft-hearted than she lets on?
2. Yalb comes to the bargaining rescue as Shallan tries to buy books... Do you think there's going to be a bigger part in events for him to play?
3. Part One ends with a ray of hope for Kaladin, as he rediscovers a sense of purpose... What did you think of the scene in the Honour Chasm, and then with Gaz afterward?
4. We catch up with Szeth for an interlude, and things are very different for him... What do you make of his choice to enslave himself - if it is in fact a choice...?
5. We also meet Dalinar Kholin, Jasnah's father, and get something of a hint that he's important where the Radiants are concerned... What do you think Dalinar's 'fits' might mean?
Feel free to throw in any other thoughts/musings/suspicions/things that interest you from this section.
