One thing I've noticed about a lot of modern space opera is that it is done with a lot of technical jargon and current scientific theory even if it is way out there... and because it is still based on modern scientific theory, it can be considered hard scifi (even though it might break a few rules such as faster than light travel in Singularity Sky). That's one of the reasons I like Alastair Reynolds so well.
Now I have found another author that fits into that niche!!! These stories do not have the greatest character development but they more than make up for it in the ideas that they purvey. These books, including Singularity Sky, are not so much about character drama as they are about opening your mind to new ideas about what possible futures could be like, how possible future civilizations might work, how new technologies might function, and act as an experiment that the author walks you through to waken you to concepts you might have never thought about before.
That is why I enjoy books like these as a change from those more focused on the relationships between characters, and that is why I enjoy the science fiction genre so much. Does that make me a technophile?
