I even wanted to give 'Lord of the Rings' a vote, which I couldn't even get through, but I thought the level of Tolkein's writing should be rated about Meyers.

I kind of get that. I guess I just don't view 'best books of all time' as being synonymous with books I like best. There are some books I personally enjoyed reading quite a bit and thought were good, but I wouldn't fathom putting on a list entitled 'best books of all time.' My thoughts are it should have more to do with quality than favorite books necessarily.
But I shouldn't expect everyone to read the title of the list the same way I do.

If they skip over it in the earlier movies it will only increase the ick factor in the last one!

And Anne, that's very true. If they don't put the reasons/history of the imprint and still put that he imprints w/ Renesmee it will be CREEPY. If they leave it out all together I'll just get mad. lol

And Anne, that's very true. If they don't put the reasons/history ..."
Heehee! I hate it when they change books! (Well, unless I hated the book to start with) If they change the imprint stuff I will definitely be one of these annoying people who whine, "That's NOT how it was in the BOOK!".

On the listopia list for best books of all time "Twilight" is in the top for or something horrendously..."
Lisa Anne, you are so right when you say, "One of the cardinal rules of great writing is never to use two words when one will do because it takes away from the strength of the writing ... well Meyers writes half a book when she would really only need to use a few words." That's it in nutshell. I have to tell everyone who reads her to give at least 200 pages for the story to start. The girl likes her exposition!

By the fourth book I was sick of the whole "Edward and Bella" story. I wanted Meyers to surprise me, but instead I was only surprised that she did almost nothing with the series. When you think about what actually happens in the story...there is almost no real plot.
I got sick of her repetition as well. I was annoyed every single time that Edward said they shouldn't be together, and Bella said she loved him. I wanted them to show it...not say it.
I also thought that the ending of the books (action scenes) were the best parts, but were always over too quickly.
I think that people like vampires and love triangle, which was why it became so popular. I thank Meyers for getting people to see what an amazing subject vampires can make, but I think other authors could have done it better.
I'm also sick of everyone thinking of the Twilight series as the "best thing since sliced bread".
I like the series, but I have read better. Although, the Twilight memorabilia that litters every single store I enter...may be clouding my judgment.
And it is true about the Vampire Diaries series being around WAY before Twilight was written. I read the series 10+ years ago...I'm always sick of everyone saying that L.J. Smith copied Meyer, because Smith wrote her series BEFORE Meyer! Ugh! LOL Sorry.

I agree. The ending would have been MUCH better if Meyer had killed off either Bella or Edward. Every good book should make you laugh at least once and cry at least once, and I did niether when reading the Twilight books.
Jo wrote: "She could have killed off Jacob and then she wouldn't have had to make him imprint on a newborn baby. Just an idea."
I think I would have been really upset if Jacob died. He was my favorite character throughout the entire series. I was one of the few people rooting for him instead of Edward.
(sigh) I have noticed that there is a lot more about the Twilight series that bugs me now, than when I first read the series. I think that my irritation at all the Twilight memorabilia has been getting to me...

And I agree Joy that the more I think about it the worse it is. I enjoyed it while reading it (mostly the first one), but it really was just a fluff read that wasn't thought out. And if everyone had left it as that I wouldn't have bothered with it, but with everyone going on about how amazing Meyers is it drives me crazy. It makes me cringe for our literary future.

Hey Jo- I happen to agree. Meyer's copped out at the end with that whole imprinting on a baby, leaving a huge ew factor to the entire storyline.
It would have been much better to have Edward or Bella merely put Jacob out of his misery. But since this is a YA book she wanted to keep it clean and give it an HEA, still it would have been better for Jake to imprint on anyone other than the baby.
There is just no way to make that acceptable.

I agree. It was a fun, easy read and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. But it's definately not one of the best books ever or great literature. Cute read, that's about it. I also agree the characters were a bit flat and Meyer really did use the same adjectives a lot. It seems editors would look at that stuff and say, "Well this is a bit redundant, why don't you grab a thesaurus." I still don't totally grasp why there's such a huge fuss over the series or why it's so wildly popular. But I guess it's good to get more teens reading so whatever.

Yeah, I saw that. I think it is a bit wrong for the publishers to use the popularity surrounding Twilight to attempt to get people to read Wuthering Heights. Wuthering Heights is a work of literature that should not be associated with Twilight, and should stand on it's own. Changing the cover to aim it at the Twilight Teen Fad is a little desperate, but it also maims the reputation of Wuthering Heights, because they feel that the only way they can get people to read it is by using an "Edward and Bella" tag on it. I think that people should read Wuthering Heights, because it is a classic, not because of an Edward and Bella tag. What does that say about people if they choose boooks, because two fictional characters liked it, instead of the facts that it is a classic. (sigh)
I'm starting to wonder if they are going to do this with more books...LOL
(sorry, I just thought this was a bit ridiculous)
However, on a positive note: There are some teenagers that do not currently appreciate the classics, and they may pick up Wuthering Heights due to the "Edward and Bella" tag, and realize that they have a love for literature...At least, it might get more teens to read the classics...(sigh)

And Jo, I completely agree that it takes away from its credibility.

It may be a bit ridiculous that they changed Wuthering Heights cover but I can imagine how many copies were sold to the Twilight fans before the cover was ever changed. A lot of the Twilight fans, the YA, are the next generation readers. They need to be exposed to many different genres, even if they get their hints from other movies and/or books. I've from other books picked up books that have been mentioned. It is like a stamp of recommendation from the author. I've not been let down yet. As readers I think we look for recommendations from various places (family, friends, bookclubs). Why not from other books?

Who is to judge who is capable of reading a classic? It would be a good thing to cross genres. I almost think that this craze would make them try hard at reading and understanding the book. If they do... perhaps onto the next classic. I'm not agreeing with the read it because of Twilight. Isn't it better to read it because you think you want to than to be made to by your teacher/Professor?

I wasn't necessarily saying they weren't capable of reading 'Wuthering Heights.' I'm sure there are many 'Twilight' readers who could enjoy both. However, I think a 'Twilight' type cover is setting them up for a completely different read than 'Wuthering Heights' actually is. So even if they would have enjoyed the book if they picked it up on their own they will be expecting something different with the 'Twilight' reference and will be disappointed by that factor. There are several of books and movies that I thought were probably good in their own right, but I didn't like them because that's not what they were billed as therefore it's not what I was looking for when I picked it up and I was underwhelmed.

Oh there are so many problems with her getting pregnant: he can't produce sperm (I mean he can't even produce tears how is that part still in production), he isn't producing his own blood (back to the getting hard issue), there are testicle/sperm/body temperature issues. However, what really bothered me was Meyer's half assed attempt to "scientifically" explain how Bella got pregnant (and that women's bodies need to change while men's bodies remain stagnant is such scientific BS) and second, that she had the option to make them (semi) realistically be able to produce semen and give life, but she didn't (instead of making an important plot point make sense in her work she just changed the concept of vampires so they sparkled in the sun). That part just showed sloppy storytelling and a lack of thought being put into the series.

It boils down to necrophilia or bestiality...
Basically this story is an affront to the whole vampire mythos. I found nothing redeemable in it. Stoker would roll over in his grave in embarrassment.

I think one of the reasons it's so popular is because it taps into that immature part most of us have inside; you know, the part normal adults don't indulge very often. ;) And also because there was a flow to the writing that made it easy to read.
I hated everything about New Moon. it is the worse book in the whole series.

On the listopia list for best books of all time "Twilight" is in the top for or something horrendously ridiculous like that. 'Twilight' in now way, shape or form deserves to be on any lists that is titled the best books of all time. I'd say it doesn't even deserve a spot in the top hundred. It is an enjoyable little story, and Meyers does have a bit of a gift for story telling. However, you could cut those books down to about half there size if Meyers would just stop constantly repeating herself on how much Bella and Edward love each other, how much Edward's skin is like Marble and his voice is like velvet and how much of a wonderful martyr Bella is. WE GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Instead of saying this things over and over and over and over again, show them through their characters instead of having Bella do things that are whiny and selfish. No this is not a great piece of literature it is not even that original. "The Vampire Diaries" the new show on TV that everyone keeps comparing to 'Twilight' was written like a decade before hand!
One of the cardinal rules of great writing is never to use two words when one will do because it takes away from the strength of the writing ... well Meyers writes half a book when she would really only need to use a few words. Also, great writers have well thought out characters and back stories before they slap a series together. They don't spend time creating a semi-new version of a vampire (the whole vampires being able to go out in the sunlight has been done many times over ... the sparkling was new however ... even if cheesy) and then throw in a twist at the end that is not feesible with what has already been created (Renesmee).
Meyers does not belong on a list with Steinbeck, Shakespeare or even Rowling. She has a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way to go before she could even fathom being a writer of that caliber. The fact that anyone put her on the best books of anything list, let alone the fact that others voted for her I find cringe worthy.
She is a fun, fluff read, and her books contain very little substance of any sort. Great for a day at the beach when you really don't want to think about much.
