Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) If you have any questions or any suggestions for the group, please list them here. I'll be sure to answer them.

message 2: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) As we've "lost" one week in January for the group read, and February is a short month, what do you think about making whatever wins the poll today last until the end of February?

message 3: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) That'd be fine jean. :-) our peter pan readalong will end at the end of the month so we can still vote for feb's group readalong.

message 4: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Great, thanks! I think more people may be able to fit Northanger Abbey in if we have those extra couple of weeks :)

message 5: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Can I suggest that you open the thread for suggestions for the next group read a little earlier, Amber?

If you open it within the next few days, then you can start the poll during the last week in April, and everyone will know what the group read is by the 1st of the month, (May, in this case) for anyone who wants to join in.

As it is, there are only 3 weeks to read each book, as you finish the poll on about 7th, I think :)

message 6: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Okay jean. You want to start nominations tomorrow then jean?

message 7: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh I haven't got anything particular in mind - it was just a suggestion, Amber :) It seems a good idea to start planning for the next month in the middle of the month, rather than towards the end.

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I already posted the thread for it. :)

message 9: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments For whatever it's worth (apropos of Jean's comments in message 5), in other groups I'm in that do a common read for a particular month, we start brainstorming to gather and narrow down suggestions about two months before the read is to start. Then we post the poll at around the beginning of the preceding month, and run it for about two weeks. That usually gives everybody ample time to secure a copy of the book (and allows for a run-off poll if two books are tied --that's only happened once in my experience). IMO, that's a system that works pretty well. (Of course, these groups usually only do one common read every year.)

message 10: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Werner. :) Are you going to nominate a book for the may group read?

message 11: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments No, Amber, I didn't plan to nominate a book this time, since I won't be taking part in the read itself --next month, I need to read and review a (thick) book I recently won in a Goodreads giveaway. For the most part, right now I'm concentrating on reducing the piles of unread books I already own, to deal with some space issues. But if I can do some rearranging later this year, to relieve the crowding, I might be able to take part in some of this group's reads in the fall months!

message 12: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Oh okay cool. :) Happy reading to you then!

message 13: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments Thanks, Amber!

message 14: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) continued from the nominations thread...

Has Holly said anything at all about when she'll be back, Amber? I know you've been doing it on your own since January, and I think Holly only started it in November, so with 2 months on and now the 8th month off I'm not sure she's really interested any more.

message 15: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I'm not sure Jean. I just started the reading for pleasure book club back in july on the 15th and have been doing this one for a while so I'm not so sure. I'll ask her soon and see if she is still interested in moderating this group with me. If not, I can do it by myself and remove her as a moderator here if she doesn't want to help run the group anymore. I'm having fun with them though.

message 16: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) That's a good idea, I think. We all appreciate your hard work here, Amber :) As Werner said, multiple moderating isn't easy, so it's really great that you put so much into it.

message 17: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I sent her a message so we'll see what she says. Thanks Jean. Everyone at the Reading for Pleasure book club said I put so much heart into it there and appreciate all I do there too and we're growing a little every day too (we got 79 members thus far). We're starting a classic and nonfiction group read in September there with our normal one and everyone is enjoying the official book club buddy reads there too.

message 18: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) See what the reply is Amber - maybe a merger would be on the cards? Then it would genuinely be more your ideas for the group (and the other mods, if there are any in the "Reading For Pleasure" Group) to develop in the way you prefer, rather than sitting in someone else's shoes as it were ;)

Shout me down somebody, if I'm speaking out of turn here! I just feel that Amber has been working really hard at holding the fort in "Tattered Tales", out of the goodness of her heart :)

message 19: by Amber (last edited Aug 11, 2014 12:51PM) (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I'm the only moderator at the reading for pleasure book club anyway. LOL. ^_^ I've been getting ideas for the book club from the other club members there anyway too. and we are going to do themed recommendation book swaps for October and December too that are Halloween for all hallows read and Christmas/winter books for December. And your fine Jean. :)

BTW I was sad when I had one person leave my RFP book club cuz they broke one of the rules which was no inappropriate behavior and when I confronted the person about it and gave a warning, the person got mad at me, said my rules were too strict for him and he left. I tried to apologize and hoped we could be friends but he said he didn't need any friends and we stopped being friends on here but he told me later he was drunk when he did it, and I told him I accepted his decision to stop being friends and blocked him on here afterwards. a bunch of people told me he got kicked out of clubs because of his vulgar behavior and that I did the right thing in enforcing the rules and this was during the first week after I started my online book club too. It made me sad that I lost a friend cuz he was being vulgar in my club and I was just trying to keep that stuff out of it too.

message 20: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh wow! What an awful thing to happen right at the start! You absolutely did the right thing though - other members might have got upset if he'd stayed and started it again. (And if he got drunk once, then it might well happen again.)

We all come on here to share what we read, among friends, and it has to be a safe environment where we can trust each other. Of course I feel sorry for those who can't help inappropriate behaviour - they've got a problem. But really, we can't sort it out, can we? It's got to be a safe happy place for all.

So well done for sticking your ground. I honestly don't think you had anything to apologise for there! And don't let it prey on your mind any more, Amber ;)

message 21: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Jean. and yeah it was awful. and I won't. :)

message 22: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments Amber, what Jean said in message 20 is exactly my sentiments, too!

Re the idea of merging the two groups, I'm not sure whether it's logistically possible, given Goodreads' sofware program, to merge two groups. (If people want to explore that idea, I can ask in the Goodreads Feedback group about whether it's feasible, and how to go about it.) Personally, I like this group's focus on the classics (even though we do have threads for other topics, which is fine). The RFP group, I'm guessing, is an eclectic group concerned with reading in general, such as two groups that I already belong to. If we do decide on a merger, I hope the merged group will keep the classics focus. Of course, that may be just me!

message 23: by Amber (last edited Aug 11, 2014 04:20PM) (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks werner but I think we should keep the groups separate as I like how we focus on classics here and reading for pleasure is all genres all forms.

message 24: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Plus I haven't heard back from holly yet so don't know what she says.

message 25: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments Thanks, Amber. Keeping the two groups separate would be my preference, too, for the same reason.

message 26: by Beth (new)

Beth Hey Amber, for the September/October read is it ok if I post some discussion questions in the thread? There are a bunch of discussion questions available online, probably for any of the books in the poll. Just trying to add to the discussion.

message 27: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Just spotted the recent comments here, Amber and Werner. That's fine by me! To be honest, I was thinking mainly of your workload and preferences, Amber.

I'm very aware that Classics are not really your choice, but on the other hand maybe they're growing on you! LOL! But the thought of doing something alien temporarily, only to find out that it's permanent might not always be welcome. And you might prefer your own choice of genre (horror? graphic novels?) to form your own group with. So I thought that merging the two groups may be a way of making it work for everybody!

You're probably right though, Werner, and merging groups might be a bit beyond Goodreads's technology. Moderators of groups change now and then, of course, and this is always preferable to a group closing, which I suppose might be the only other viable option. One huge group I was in closed over a year ago now, and this caused a lot of bad feeling because it was particularly active, and people had a mad scramble to keep their records/copies of discussions/anything they valued before it all disappeared. I was quite a recent member, so it didn't really affect me, but I never could understand why that group wasn't just "passed on"! After all, I didn't feel the need to burn down every school I taught in after I left! LOL! Mostly we value what we've created, and leaving it behind for others is a good thing, surely?

Anyway, as long as you're happy Amber, then so am I! You're doing a great job, and have made this a lovely relaxed forum where we can all discuss and suggest things. And I've made some great friends here too :) (Hi Beth! Don't mean to ignore you... comments can get a bit jumbled!)

I hope you hear back from Holly soon, Amber.

And I too like to have a group where the focus is on Classics, especially if we now have a bi-monthly read, as two months gives me more of a chance to join in! :)

message 28: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Hello everyone....I joined this group a couple of days ago because of the Classics theme, and because it seemed a friendly place for a new-to-groups person like myself. Since then I've also joined a group themed for animal books, and looked for one about Westerns but none appealed to me. I was wondering what is the name of your reading for pleasure group, Amber? If I have missed the title somewhere in the comments, I apologize...it's first thing in the morning here and I am not totally awake yet. =)) Thanks much!!

message 29: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Hi Debbie! Hope you enjoy this group. It is a friendly place :)

I see you are a Daphne du Maurier enthusiast. I'm enjoying rereading her novels too, and reviewing as I go.

message 30: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments Debbie, welcome to the group! A quick Goodreads navigation tip (I'm still picking them up myself, after over six years!): if you click on any Goodreads member's icon, it'll take you to his/her profile. If you scroll down, you'll eventually come to a list of every group the person is in. The group names on the list are clickable links to the group's main page. Hope that helps!

message 31: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Good idea, Werner! I do this so automatically that I forget there was a time when it was a big lightbulb moment! And I can thoroughly recommend the general group I'm in (which you'll see on my page.) Hope that's not too much of an ad, Amber? You're in it too... :/

message 32: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Hey Debbie, welcome to the group and hope you'll enjoy it here!

Hello Beth, nice to meet you :)

message 33: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Thanks to all of you for your tips.....I am not only new to groups, I'm new to computers so I still think I might start WWIII if I push the wrong buttons. I will take the time to explore more now....and hopefully more bravely too.

message 34: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) @Beth, that's fine. Go ahead.

@Jean Yeah am totally happy with the ways the groups are right now and have not heard back from Holly yet.

@Debbie It's called the Reading for Pleasure book club. and no prob.

Sorry Everyone. I just saw all your comments as I just got back from my Orlando trip which was really fun so getting back to everyone today. Hope everyone has a great day. :)

message 35: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) BTW this is what Holly told me as she finally got back to me on the group.:

So sorry for not getting back to you, it's been hectic, and we've had some really exciting ideas coming through the reading challenge group.

Unfortunately, the likelihood is that I probably won't be back at Tattered Tales. With my life going to be more hectic, and the Reading Challenge group going so big, it's going to be hard to run two book clubs on top of University and anything.

Feel free to keep on running group, I do check up on it, and it seems to be doing marvelously well. Also feel free to get in more moderators if you wish to. I hereby relinquish all control to you :)

Sorry, and I'll definitely still check in and see how it's doing.

I tried to remove her as moderator but it said that I couldn't remove her as she created the group so she'll have to remove herself and I wrote her back and told her that.

message 36: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) She said I can have others in the group moderate with me if they would like to as well but I think I'm keeping this group and the reading for pleasure group separate but my other group is starting to do a classic and non-fiction group read starting in September which will be cool too with our regular read.

message 37: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks for keeping us all informed Amber. At least your position is clearer now :)

message 38: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) No problem Jean. ^_^ We've had tons of new members here recently and My RFP group gained a few new members here as well and this my first time back since I returned from my SeaWorld Orlando trip too.

message 39: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Amber, just wanted you to know that I, for one, do appreciate all the hard work you put in for Tattered Tales. I like this group because of the classics focus!

message 40: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I echo Alice :)

message 41: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Alice! :)

message 42: by Werner (new)

Werner | 876 comments Alice wrote: "Amber, just wanted you to know that I, for one, do appreciate all the hard work you put in for Tattered Tales." Amber, I'm sure that Alice speaks for all of us!

message 43: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Thanks Werner! :)

message 44: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I have an idea about the next readalong, for November to December. You talked about setting it up in October, Amber. I wondered if it might be a good idea to make it a "choose your own" from all the monthly reads we've had so far. Most people have one or two they've missed because of other commitments, but would like to read anyway. I know I have!

If you put up a list (in October) of all the ones we've had so far - is it about 8 or 9? - then we can each choose the one we want and comment on the thread that's already set up. Other people would probably come in on that when they see there's a new post. You could call it "Second Chance" or "Take Two" if you want a name! And there's nothing to stop us reading more than one if we really want to catch up :)

What do you think, Amber? Since two people have already said they'll be missing the group read out this time, this might be a nice idea for the end of the year?

message 45: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) So do you guys want a free choice one then? I'll plan to set it up prob in the next week or two.

message 46: by Holly (new)

Holly | 52 comments I have a question, but it's not about the group....
